Emma Lee and Michael Greenley had been wanting another baby for eight years, so they were elated when they found out they were pregnant. “Everything in the pregnancy was perfect until we got to that 23-week mark,” Emma Lee says. “I went to the doctor, and they said that my cervix was open, and I needed to go to the hospital immediately.” Her doctors ordered an amniocentesis to determine if there were any signs of infection, and it came back positive for a bacterium. Shortly after, Emma Lee went into labor.
Lois was born via Cesarean section, weighing 1 pound, 7.8 ounces. “It was nerve wracking because she was so tiny,” Emma Lee recalls. “She had so many tubes and wires and I wasn't even allowed to hold her.” But Lois kept getting stronger, and throughout her five months in the NICU, March of Dimes NICU Family Support® was there for her and her parents every step of the way. “She is thriving, and I attribute a lot of that success to March of Dimes,” Emma Lee adds.
Each year in the U.S., 1 in 10 babies is born preterm and many end up in the NICU—but with your help, we can fund more research to determine the causes and preventions of preterm birth and continue providing support for families like the Greenleys during their NICU stay.
Celebrate this important month by sharing stories, engaging online, and taking action to honor NICU families, babies, graduates, and the dedicated NICU nurses, hospital staff, and healthcare professionals who care for them.

Many babies spend their earliest days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to preterm birth, birth defects, surgical or genetic conditions, or other diagnosis. This can be a stressful and overwhelming experience. For more than 20 years, March of Dimes has offered support and education to families with a baby in the NICU and as they transition home. Make a donation during this month so we can continue to be there for moms, dads, and babies in the NICU through our programs.
September is NICU Awareness Month

Take action
Many babies born too soon will spend time in the NICU. We’re working to change this by passing the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2023, the federal government’s commitment to preventing preterm birth and its long-term consequences.
