Accidents happen, and when they do they may be expensive if you're held legally responsible for property damage or injuries. A GPEL policy is designed to add an extra layer of liability coverage on top of another insurance policy, such as auto or homeowners insurance. It may help cover you when a claim exceeds the limits of these policies.
A GPEL policy provides liability coverage for personal injury, bodily injury, or property damage you or a covered family member is liable for in excess of the required underlying limits provided under your primary policies, e.g., auto, home, or watercraft.

How does GPEL work?
One example of how a GPEL policy functions is if you're at fault in a car accident that injures another driver. Your regular auto insurance may cover the other driver up to the limit you selected, say $250,000, but you could be responsible for the extra costs.
For instance, if the injured driver sues you for $1 million because they can't work for six months, your auto insurance could cover up to $250,000, leaving you to pay the remaining $750,000.
A GPEL policy could cover these additional costs and protect your assets, such as your bank account, home, and other property.
What are underlying limits?
Underlying policy limits are the minimum amount of liability insurance that must be maintained on primary insurance policies before a GPEL policy takes effect. These limits help ensure that the primary insurance policy handles the initial impact of a claim, while the excess policy provides additional coverage. Your home, auto, watercraft, or other insurance policies have personal underlying liability loss limits. You need to maintain these underlying limits to avoid gaps in coverage between the underlying policy and the GPEL coverage.
Who is covered under my GPEL policy?
The GPEL policy covers you, your spouse or domestic partner, any relative, or any other non-relative person under 25 who is in your or the relative’s care, all of whom must be residents of the same household. Additionally, coverage extends to “permissible use,” which includes any person using a covered vehicle or watercraft with permission from the certificate holder or a family member with respect to that person’s legal responsibility arising out of its use.
Can I keep my policy if I retire or leave my current employer?
If you leave or retire from the company offering this benefit, you may no longer be eligible to participate in the group program. Please contact the GPEL Center of Excellence at 855-441-6365 (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 8 pm, ET) to discuss coverage replacement options.
How do I submit a claim?
If you encounter a claim related to bodily injury, personal injury, or property damage involving your household or members of your household, please contact the GPEL Center of Excellence at 855-441-6365 (Monday to Friday, 8 am to 8 pm, ET) or email GPEL@MarshMMA.com.

Usually, the group policy provides coverage after (“in excess of”) any other insurance you have. The only exception is if your other excess policy is specifically written to sit above the group policy and lists the group policy as the underlying coverage.
If you have Chubb underlying coverage, you must reduce your individual underlying liability limits to $1,000,000 or less. It’s best to ask your insurance agent or contact the GPEL Center of Excellence to arrange a personal risk review to determine how your current excess policy would coordinate with the group policy.
