What it means to us
As the largest mountain range in North America, the Rocky Mountains are synonymous with Colorado, boasting a diverse environment of snow-covered mountains, river canyons, open plains, and arid deserts. Bordering the great plains and the front range, the Rockies served as a guidepost in westward expansion with Denver a beacon for gold and land seekers. It’s a state full of history, natural beauty, environmentally conscious and prideful. At McCarthy, this resonates. Just as Colorado boasts a diverse landscape with a wealth of riches, McCarthy leverages its vast resources as a large national company while putting down deep roots and investing in our local communities. We're proud to live and work here for over 50 years, and we're fortunate to contribute to the positive impacts across this region. Explore this site to learn more about how McCarthy is working to deepen our roots in Denver and surrounding communities, and why we're proud to call Colorado home.

The Kauffman Center and performing arts venues are top-notch. Whether taking a stroll on the Plaza, shopping and ice-skating at Crown Center, grabbing a drink with friends in Westport or downtown at Power & Light, visiting the shops and tables at the outdoor City Market in the River Market district, or taking the kids to the various attractions at Union Station, there is always something to do and places to go explore.
- Justin Hauser, Safety Manager
There are so many good place to visit in Kansas City, and it depends what you're in to. The first question I usually get is what's the best BBQ and that is JACK STACK! If it's restaurants or bars, as a BD professional, I'd like to think that I have that scoped out. Love the Crossroads and Plaza areas - Boulevard, Percheron, Harry's Country Club, Rye, Granfalloon, O'Dowds to name a few. Oh, and of course, Arrowhead Stadium!
- Marcus Gilmore, Business Development Manager
The plaza lights at Christmas Time. The World War I Museum. Which is the world's only museum dedicated to World War 1 which when you visit it and you realize that it was originally completed in 5 years after the citizens of Kansas City raised more than $2.5 million in 10 days to pay for the construction you start to understand the power and passion of the people of Kansas City. Any Chiefs Sunday at Arrowhead is a must. Big 12 Basketball Tournament at Power and Light District. Any Bar-B-Que restaurant in Kansas City is better than the best anywhere else. Boulevard Brewery Visitor Center
- Andrew Masters, Senior Project Manager
Chiefs at Arrowhead is a must if it's football season. KC sporting games are also a lot of fun. I'd take them to any of our BBQ spots like Q39, Joes, then Mean Mule, King G's, Green Lady Lounge, Boulevard Tap Room, First Friday's, are some fun places and things to do here in town.
- Matt Wasowicz, Senior Regional Safety Manager
A few great spots that I love are Loose Park, the Plaza and some fun restaurants in the Crossroads!
- Chloe Pinkleman, Marketing Coordinator
I really enjoy going out and finding new restaurants and different places around KC. Some of my favorite include california taco shop, KC Joes barbeque, Q39, and several others. I also enjoy going downtown and walking around finding new spots.
- Zachary Goodner, Senior Project Engineer
Definitely a Rockies game (even if they lose!) It's a fun stadium to see a game at. I also enjoy City Park for walking or jogging. The National Western Stock Show and Rodeo is one of my favorite events each year and the Pueblo Chili Fest/State Fair is always a blast.
- Amber English, Schedling Manager
My favorite Colorado activities include catching a concert at Red Rocks, heading up the Poudre Cannon for hiking or fishing, attending a concert at Mishawaka, going snowboarding at Steamboat, and enjoying the PRB Rodeo at the Denver Stock Show.
- Justin Peterson, Sr. Vice President Operations
My favorite activities include anything outdoors! I love to trail run in Golden, climb at Staunton State Park, ski Winter Park or Steamboat, backpack in Rocky Mountain National Park, ice climb in Ouray, slacklining at Solans Lake, sail at Cherry Creek Reservoir, or visiting any of the four national parks.
- Maria Peralta, Design Integration Project Engineer
My favorite things in Denver are the coffee shops and parks (even though I don't like coffee)! I love taking a favorite book to Aviano for a great atmosphere and chai tea latte. Then I make my way to Wash Park or Cheesman Park for some great scenery and unbeatable people/dog watching.
- Sally Koch, Integrated Design Project Engineer
A few of my favorite places to hunt, fish, hike and camp include Carter Lake, Horsetooth Reservoir, Colorado State University, South Platte River, Poudre River. I was born and raised in Colorado and graduated from CSU so I've always enjoyed snowboarding in Winter Park.
- Preston Fisbeck, Superintendent
As new parents, our current favorites involve a lot of restaurants and food joints. My wife and I frequent Venalonzos for great tacos and nachos. We like to get breakfast on the weekend at Moe's Bagels, and walk through Cherry Creek Resevoir with our dog. Whenever family comes to visit, we like to bring them through Union Station and explore the old neighborhoods of cherry creek to admire the architecture.

LEADING THE WAY IN COLORADO
Sr. Vice President Joe Brunsman continuing to plant roots in the Rockies
As the KC office continues to expand, Wolfe believes it’s important to retain the close-knit, family atmosphere among team members. “I love knowing people’s names, their kids' names and their families,” he says. “We definitely have something special here.” Ultimately, Wolfe views his decision to work at McCarthy as beneficial for his career and family. “There hasn't been a day that I've regretted my decision to join McCarthy,” he says. “I've really enjoyed the experience…and I'm home every night for dinner.”
The technical challenges of water projects have always appealed to Wolfe. “At the end of the project, you get this huge reward of stepping back and saying, ‘We overcame some really big obstacles and have a great facility, a happy owner, and everybody walks away with some good experiences.’” The Nelson project comes on the heels of McCarthy’s successful completion of the Tomahawk Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility improvements, another Johnson County Water project that wrapped up in early 2022. The McCarthy difference Since signing on with McCarthy, Wolfe has been particularly impressed by the people and culture. “It’s a very welcoming environment…everyone's personable, super friendly and supportive,” he says, attributing the unique culture to McCarthy’s status as an employee-owned company. “Because all of us own the company, there’s built-in incentive to do our best work and make sure others around us are successful as well,” he notes.
In November 2021, Wolfe joined McCarthy’s national Water & Wastewater team as project director. “My day-to-day role is to provide the overall structure and guidance for the Nelson job,” he says. “I work with the project team on coaching, mentoring, training and helping folks understand the project and their role within it. One of my greatest pleasures is watching our team members grow and take on more impactful roles on the project.” With a personable leadership style, Wolfe enjoys building close relationships with teammates and sharing lots of laughs with them. “It's gotten to the point where if there's not a dad joke at the end of a meeting, people are asking for one,” he notes. The McCarthy team is currently upgrading and expanding the existing 1947 plant to increase its wet weather treatment capacity and equp the facility to meet increasingly stringent water quality regulations. “What we're building will give Johnson County a lot more options to expand in the future,” Wolfe says. As the sole facility in its service area—serving about 120,000 Johnson County residents—the plant must remain operational throughout construction. “Our approach must be very precise and strategic,” Wolfe says. “We have to keep flow coming through the plant, which means we can only build a certain portion of the plant at a time.”
KC-Bound A few years after becoming parents, the couple decided to relocate to Kansas City. “We always wanted a second child and didn't think California was the best place to raise our family,” Wolfe says. He transferred to his employer’s KC office in 2015, but ended up spending the bulk of his time working on projects in Guam, New Orleans and Chicago. “We had our second daughter, and I was traveling nonstop,” he recalls. “Having to leave my family on a Sunday was particularly rough.” Eager to find a new position that would keep him closer to home, Wolfe began reaching out to his professional network. “I was sitting in the airport one day waiting for a flight, and I decided to call a friend from McCarthy and send him my resume,” he says. Lucky for him, McCarthy had just been awarded the Nelson Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvements project, a seven-year assignment to modernize and expand Johnson County’s oldest water treatment plant.
The following summer, Wolfe returned to complete another internship with the same company. While working on mechanical and piping systems at a water treatment plant, he realized the similarities between constructing a water treatment facility and working on an automobile engine. “The superintendent explained the importance of understanding how the overall plant operates so you can focus on your piece of the puzzle,” he says. “I repeat a lot of what he told me to the young people who work with me today.” Wolfe’s job performance secured him an opportunity to join the company full-time after he graduated. Two days after earning an automotive technology degree from Pittsburg State University, he hopped in his car and returned to L.A. to start his professional construction career. “I spent 15 years out in the field working on everything from a $100 million wastewater job to a $1.5 billion freeway job with 23 bridges and 11 miles of roadway expansion.” While living on the West Coast, he also met his future wife, Tiffany, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, who was working as director of finance for Warner Brothers at the time.
After being tapped to lead McCarthy’s Colorado office back in the spring of 2022, Joe Brunsman has completely fallen in love with Colorado’s community and landscape. He is excited to kick off our Rooted in the Rockies campaign since it coincides with McCarthy’s focus on being a community builder. “We are invested in the communities in which we work, we support and give back to our communities and we must create a positive impact. It’s also a reminder that McCarthy has been in Colorado for 50 years and we are here to stay.” His focus on building a culture defined by proactive collaboration and a “one-team” approach empowers McCarthy’s project teams to create an exceptional experience for all involved. Joe loves being an active member of the local community through coaching sports, serving as Boy Scouts Committee Chairman, and volunteering at local events. Joe is proud of the projects McCarthy builds in Colorado have a positive impact on the local communities he loves. Our team builds water and wastewater treatment plants that provide clean water to our neighbors, solar projects that provide clean energy to the grid, and hospitals that support the health of our families and friends. By working in the higher education and aviation markets, we improve lives and connect families. “We provide great careers for our craft professionals, and we also support the local charities that align with our core values.”

enr mountain states best project in energy
We are proud of our project team at the Lightsource BP Sun Mountain Solar project in Pueblo, Colorado for being recognized as the ENR Mountain States Best Project in the Energy/Industrial category. In December, the project team will celebrate and be recognized at the ENR Mountain States Award Ceremony. The Sun Mountain Project is the most recent utility-scale solar project McCarthy has built for Lightsource bp. Delivering nearly 300 megawatts of capacity, Sun Mountain provides enough clean, affordable energy to power more than 53,000 homes and abate over 400,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. That’s the equivalent of taking 87,000 fuel-burning cars off the road each year.
As one of our partners on Platte, the McCarthy Colorado team frequents Proto’s Pizzeria Napoletana in Downtown Denver (as well as surrounding suburbs) for lunch and family dinners. Founded by Pam Proto in 1999 in Longmont, she brought traditional thin crust, bubbly and charred pizza from Boston to Colorado. Not long after the doors opened, Proto’s Pizza was recognized in many publications including Bon Appetit magazine. The experience had been elevated to table service, linen napkins, and delicious wines with a full bar to make it a true dining experience. Proto’s has been tossing pizza for a long time now. Pam has gone on to open several more locations. No matter which Proto’s you choose as your favorite, one thing will never change, and that is their passion to create and bake for you the best pizza you will ever eat.

Senior project manager Danika Shockley embraces all aspects of Colorado
It has been a homecoming for Danika Shockley. After beginning her professional AEC career as an intern for McCarthy on the Children’s Hospital of Colorado replacement tower in 2007, opportunity came knocking and she was drawn away to Atlanta. In her 12 years in the south, Danika helped on local school and hospital projects, working her way up from project engineer to superintendent. In 2019, Danika was excited to be presented with the chance to return to her roots in Colorado, where she enjoys experiencing all four seasons with lots of sunshine. Ironically enough, she’s had the opportunity to return to Children’s Hospital of Colorado for several projects, reengaging with some of the same professionals years later. THE ROOTS OF HER ALTER EGO There are foodies, and then there is Danika Shockley. She frequents various restaurants in Denver and surrounding communities and is relied on heavily for recommendations by her peers. In her spare time, Danika enjoys a run at Wash Park, a round of golf at Willis Case followed by lunch at Post Oak BBQ, and watching football with a cold beverage at Platt Park Brewery.

When not on-site, you can find Mark in the exact same place — outside! Whether hunting, hiking, or camping, Mark has set deep roots in the Colorado landscape, appreciating the variety of natural wonders the Rockies have to offer. Having joined McCarthy in 2016, Mark has taken part in more than 12 solar projects, with some brief stints supporting Colorado’s critical work on UCHealth campuses and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Not only does his work in renewables satisfy his love for the outdoors, but the environmental impact of the growing market has breathed greater purpose into Mark’s focus on safety. Most notably, Mark cherishes his time spent on Bighorn Solar in Pueblo, Colorado. A 300 MWdc facility, this project marked Colorado’s largest renewable energy effort to date, requiring greater strategy, intentional safety, and a more substantial workforce than ever before for our Colorado partners. While Mark has always appreciated the family atmosphere within McCarthy, this project solidified that culture, as partners from around the country flocked to Colorado for this undertaking and leading to the mentoring of many new partners entering the renewable energy sector. The roots of his alterego: O-H! As alumni of Ohio State University, Mark and his wife have passed on their love for their alma mater to their children, creating family traditions in support of the Buckeyes all the way from Denver. Taking FLight in the mile high state
Colorado – known for its vibrant outdoor community and intense snow slopes – received a new member four years ago when project director Ethan Walton hopped off I-25. After attending Purdue University, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in construction management, Ethan earned a dual master’s degree in business administration and strategic management from Indiana University. Since, he has been making significant contributions to McCarthy over the last decade. During his tenure, Ethan has worked on projects ranging up to $1 billion in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, water, telecommunications, and advanced technology. Recently, however, Ethan has taken the reigns for Colorado’s aviation efforts. At Denver International Airport, Ethan is leading the new Southwest Airlines general use (GUB) and cargo buildings. The GUB will be over 107,000 square feet and act as a dual-purpose facility – storing both manufacturing equipment and the airline’s provisions. The cargo facility will enhance Southwest’s cargo handling capabilities with a 28,640-square-foot facility, featuring a warehouse, front-office drop-off area, and docks to load and unload freight from the cargo customers. The roots of his alter ego: Ethan, who grew up in Indiana, had always shied away from colder weather; his family typically escaped the brutal Midwest winters by traveling to warmer places. However, like many Colorado transplants, he took quickly to the diverse winter sports scene by snowboarding. Ethan expresses that his love for the sport is a combination of the breathtaking mountain scenery and an incredible sense of freedom that he feels as he carves down the slopes. Ethan also believes that there is nothing “quite like capping off a great day on the mountain with a crisp beer” at the snow lodge.

UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital Topping Out Ceremony
Last month, in Longmont, Colorado, McCarthy partners celebrated the topping out of UCHealth’s Longs Peak Hospital. Led by McCarthy and designed by Page, the $55 million project consisted of an 89,000-square foot expansion renovation including new operating rooms, post-anesthesia care units, labor and delivery rooms, and ER bays. In addition, the expansion included a new helipad, an enlarged Central Utility Plant, and expanded kitchen and dining facilities. This expansion responds to the growing demand for healthcare in Longmont and surrounding areas. We sincerely hope to see this hospital flourish while helping citizens get better medical care.
Experience an extravagant dining journey at Beckon – an up-and-coming, innovative restaurant where each of the quarterly menu releases are inspired by the four lunar seasons: the snow moon, strawberry moon, harvest moon, and the long night moon. Indulge in multiple courses that blend the influences of world travel and classical training. Lose yourself in dishes that harmonize old and new flavors, complemented by drinks that warm the senses. This irresistible opportunity can be found in the heart of downtown Denver, where you will be assured a unique and memorable experience.
Founded in 2002 by brother and sister duo Brandon Berumen and Lenee Koch, LEI companies, Inc. embodies their beliefs – to ‘elevate what’s expected’. McCarthy is proud to work with LEI companies, Inc. as a commercial partner, and we look forward to what’s to come!
While many of the partners featured on Rooted in the Rockies have been celebrated for their recent addition to the Colorado team, Justin and the Peterson family have been truly rooted in the Colorado landscape for the past 21 years. In fact, Justin fondly credits the Children’s Hospital Colorado Replacement Facility, one of his first projects with McCarthy from 2003 to 2007, as a major source of his local pride. Over the years, several of his friends, family members, and even children have undergone treatment in this facility. With each visit, Justin has experienced the same full-circle reminder that the projects McCarthy builds serve real communities and impact multitudes of individuals and families daily. Since 2015, Justin has lead our Colorado teams in constructing 24 renewable energy projects in the Centennial State to keep our Rocky Mountains green. Justin’s connection to the Rocky Mountains can be seen both personally and professionally in the experiences he seeks outside of his work. Personally, Justin has embraced all of the natural activities that the four seasons in Colorado have to offer, whether snowboarding, fly fishing at Poudre Canyon, catching a concert at Red Rocks, or watching professional bull riding at the Denver Stock Show. Professionally, however, Justin is a loyal supporter of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, which aims to steward personal individuality and eliminating discrimination. He is actively involved in youth sports for his children and finds opportunities to volunteer with Children’s Hospital Colorado and UCHealth. It would only be fitting to close out a successful year of Rooted in the Rockies with a partner who truly embodies what it means to set roots in a community in which we live, build, and serve others. The Roots Behind His Alter Ego: Justin has been an avid fisher for as long as he can remember. As a kid, he spent every summer sailing on a boat through British Columbia and Alaska, saltwater fishing for salmon and halibut. In college, he found a passion for fly fishing, a hobby he now shares with his family on summer trips on the North Platte River in Wyoming.

Based in Keenesburg, Colorado, H2 Enterprises primarily serves as an expert in reclamation and land management. Founded by the Huwa brothers in 2002, H2 got its start after the Hayman Fire tore through Denver’s forests and water supply. The Huwas applied their expertise from their farm-based upbringing to help restore the land, and now have over two decades of work in reclamation and civil construction to enhance Colorado’s natural beauty. H2 first partnered with McCarthy in 2017 on a renewable energy project in Northern Colorado. We’ve now completed many projects together, leveraging their expertise on civil, reclamation, and vegetation life cycle management. H2’s Goal Zero initiative also speaks to McCarthy’s culture with a commitment to prevent safety incidents at all costs.

Embracing & elevating in the great outdoors
Colorado became a lot more fun when project superintendent Richard Brown stepped on the scene. Richard has embraced Colorado’s mountainous landscape and has combined it with his passion for construction management. If he isn’t on site, you can find him blending in with the native Coloradans - being outside! Whether golfing, camping, hunting, or boating, Richard has set his roots deep in the Rocky Mountains and is looking forward to everything its scenic landscape has to offer. Richard joined the Colorado team in late 2015, and in his nine years on the job, he has taken on any responsibility that’s come his way; managing labor and trade partners, overseeing construction in the field, leading personnel, and documenting construction to achieve quality and a timely project completion. Richard believes the foundation of his position as a McCarthy project superintendent is to lead with safety and quality in mind. At Denver International Airport, Richard and his team spend their time working tirelessly on the new general use building for Southwest Airlines – which is smack dab in the middle of DEN’s two main runways. He is focused on frequent and transparent communication with partners at Jviation and DEN throughout the construction of the 107,000-square-foot facility.

Currently, Maria is a partner in the Southwest Water Services Group, where she is currently involved in preconstruction. She has played a pivotal role in major projects such as the P7 South Water Treatment Plant and the Phase 4 Expansion on the Kurt Segler Water Treatment Facility. With her interests in sustainable design and infrastructure, Maria has quickly become an invaluable asset, contributing her expertise and passion to every project. The roots of her alter ego: In her spare time, Maria enjoys rock climbing. During her freshman year of college, thanks to some friends on the university’s climbing team, she was encouraged to try the sport. She quickly fell in love and started her journey at the local gym. Now, six years later, climbing has become a near-daily activity for this project engineer. Maria particularly enjoys scaling the Colorado scenery in Clear Creek Canyon, Rifle, Shelf Road, and others. According to Maria, her favorite thing about the sport is that it challenges both mind and body. Despite how much it may hurt her fingers, she says “it is a very relaxing state”.

Project Superintendent Preston Fisbeck has been an integral part of the construction industry for over 20 years. Beginning at 14 years old, Preston began working as a laborer. His father, who owned a local construction company, hired his son as a part-time laborer during the summers. Preston continued this work through college before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in construction management from Colorado State University. He then charted his path by combining practical experience with academic knowledge. Preston’s love for construction is primarily driven by his love for the outdoors, building, and gaining hands-on experience. For him, the most rewarding part of the job is “seeing what you did and having something to show for it.” In his current role as Project Superintendent at McCarthy, Preston not only focuses on building structures, but also on building people. He expressed his passion for “mentoring the craft” and guiding new talent in the industry. Currently, he is working on the Southwest Airlines General Use Building (GUB) project, further solidifying his role as a key player in McCarthy’s Colorado portfolio. His journey with McCarthy has been marked by a series of successful projects that demonstrate his capacity and commitment to excellence. Some of these projects include the UCHealth Harmony Cancer Center Linear Accelerator Expansion and the Skyline High School Remodel The roots of his alter ego: Deeply rooted in his childhood memories, Preston enjoys spending his spare time hunting. Influenced by his grandfather, it has become a cherished family event. As he’s grown, these outings have provided invaluable family bonding time and opportunities to meet others who share the same passion. Preston’s enthusiasm for the sport is now passed down to his two children, and his hope is that the tradition will continue for future generations. His favorite hunting grounds are in northeastern Colorado for bird hunting. For newcomers, Preston advises to “do some research, and to find a hunting club because it is a good resource and way to find other like-minded people.”

Project Assistant Superintendent Lorenzo Cobos has been an asset to McCarthy Building Companies since joining as a general foreman in April 2016. Originally from Durango, Mexico, Lorenzo immigrated to the United States and found opportunity in construction. In 1998, he began learning concrete forms on the job, and this hands-on experience ignited his passion for building. Over the years, he has honed his skills and built a solid foundation in the industry. During his tenure at McCarthy, Lorenzo has made tremendous contributions, both as a craftsperson and assistant superintendent. Some of his notable projects include work for Children’s Hospital Colorado, Greenbacker CO Solar Gardens, and miscellaneous JOC contracts. Lorenzo thrives on the challenges that come with construction. He enjoys working with his partners to overcome obstacles and find effective solutions. He is a testament to the dedication and hard work that drives McCarthy. We are proud to have him on our team, and we look forward to seeing what he does next. The roots of his alter ego: When Lorenzo is not making strides on the site, he is an avid outdoor enthusiast who finds joy in camping, riding ATVs and motorcycles, spending time on the lake, and cherishing moments with his family. About seven years ago, on a camping trip organized by his brother-in-law, Lorenzo was able to witness first-hand the joy of being in the great outdoors. Seeing his four daughters running, laughing, and having a wonderful time made him realize just how beneficial these experiences were to his family. He values the time spent away from the internet and cellphones to focus on genuine connections and conversations with his loved ones. These adventures have become a cherished family tradition while enhancing their overall well-being.

NATIONAL GROUP, LOCAL IMPACT
After joining McCarthy as a craft professional in 2011 on the Westside Water Treatment Plant project in Fort Worth, Texas, Senior Project Manager Erin Robb quickly found a passion for the water/wastewater industry. Erin then made the decision to switch his degree program to construction management, setting the baseline for what has now become more than a decade of successful projects for local municipalities across Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and now Colorado. Erin is excited to help provide excellent water quality across Colorado, building off the legacy of Colorado Springs Utilities Ed Bailey Water Treatment Plant (WTP). As a highly collaborative design-build project with Carollo Engineers, the Ed Bailey WTP was built to provide the community with more resiliency to differing water quality conditions in the region. Currently, Erin is leading McCarthy’s preconstruction efforts for the Westminster Boulevard Drinking Water Facility project in Westminster, CO with similar goals in mind. He is driven by the collaboration and ingenuity of the people in the Water industry and passionate about growing the next generation of leaders. Erin is involved with local industry associations including the Rocky Mountain Water Environmental Association (RMWEA) and the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) Rocky Mountain Region Water/Wastewater Committee. This year, Erin was accepted to participate in the 2024 Water Leadership Institute through the Water Environmental Federation (WEF), an intensive, year-long leadership program that culminates at the national WEFTEC conference in New Orleans. Raised in Colorado, Erin moved away in high school but is incredibly excited to return to the Rockies with his wife to raise their daughter in the natural wonders that formed such valuable memories for his childhood. The roots of his alter ego: As a devoted Denver Broncos fan, Erin fondly remembers the iconic back-to-back Super Bowl victories of 1997 and 1998, celebrating Colorado legends like John Elway, Terrell Davis, Ed McCaffrey, and Rod Smith. He cherishes his time spent with his family gathered at his grandparents’ house for delicious meals and to cheer on the Broncos. Erin and his three brothers were known for turning the street into their own mini stadium, reenacting the big plays with their NERF footballs and enjoying a few rounds of NFL Gameday ’98 on their PlayStation.

For VDC Manager, Jackson Murphy, the decision to move to the Colorado office would mark the 11th move for him and his wife in their 7 years of marriage. But this time it was different: it felt more permanent. Since joining McCarthy in 2019, Jackson has worked on countless Colorado and Arizona projects. In 2023, his family made the move to Denver and has found enjoyment both in and outside of work. Now raising his daughter here, Jackson feels the importance of prioritizing a home that infuses nature with a strong sense of community. As a VDC Manager, Jackson supports multiple projects concurrently but has really found a sense of passion in the Children’s Hospital Colorado Level 10 buildout, Southwest Airlines, and CSU CALEPH projects. With the team’s collaboration, they have developed more efficient workflows during the design phase to solve potential issues before they arise in construction using VDC technology. With this new chapter, Jackson has begun to embrace his industry involvement beyond McCarthy’s walls, receiving his Designated Design-Build Professional Certification earlier this year and participating in industry-specific conferences! He cites McCarthy’s emphasis on community investment and involvement as one of the primary reasons he feels at home among his partners. The roots of his alter ego: Jackson got into video games at a young age and has always enjoyed it as a way to spend time with friends and family. A proud PlayStation 1 owner, Jackson remembers spending time with his siblings playing Gran Turismo and Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

Superintendent to Scheduling
Growing up in the Alaskan mountain landscape, Sienna fondly recalls her time spent working with her stepfather at his residential excavation company prior to college. The hands-on collaboration and physical fulfillment she received from learning to operate heavy equipment propelled her desire to one day become a superintendent. Upon graduating from Texas Tech University, Sienna joined our Colorado team looking to combine her love for the mountains with Colorado’s 300 days of sunshine. In just seven years, Sienna has touched more than six hospital networks in Colorado, championing critical SSG work across Children’s Hospital of Colorado, UCHealth, Medical Center of the Rockies, and St. Anthony’s among others. She credits UCHealth Longs Peak Medical Center as one of the most formative experiences to her career, as she managed the prefabricated exterior wall scope and got to see the installation of a concrete ceiling as thick as she is tall. In January, Sienna made a career switch to be closer to her family, joining our Renewable Energy team as a project scheduler for Sun Pond and Jones City. Still residing in Colorado, Sienna also aids project pursuit teams with scheduling scenarios before handing off awarded projects to their respective schedulers. In the transition from being a healthcare superintendent to a solar scheduler, Sienna has found that the core of her work has remained the same: she most enjoys helping project teams plan and execute the work strategically. The roots of her alter ego: As a competitive barrel racer, Sienna will tell you that she’s been riding horses longer than she’s been walking. Throughout her childhood, she competed in various rodeo events, fostering her passion for horses and the intimate level of training between a horse and its rider. Now with horses of her own, she still competes in barrel racing competitions as her greatest passion outside of construction. Whether it’s a relaxing trail ride or training for an upcoming competition, Colorado has provided a beautiful natural landscape for her sport.

Situated on more than 1,700 acres of land, Sun Mountain is among the largest solar projects to be completed to date in Colorado. It supports Colorado’s clean energy goal to reduce emissions statewide 26% by 2025, 50% by 2030 and 90% by 2050 – creating cleaner and healthier communities across Colorado, while contributing to local economies. Sun Mountain created hundreds of U.S. jobs across the supply chain, while supporting domestic manufacturers and low carbon products. More than 400 people in total worked on-site to build the facility, about 250 of which were hired from the local community.
Children's Hospital Colorado Replacement Hospital
Aurora
McCarthy constructed this 10-story, 853,000-square foot replacement hospital for Children’s Hospital Colorado in a joint venture with G.H. Phipps. The facility has an adjoining 5-story, 190,000-square foot Ambulatory Care building and adjacent 5-story, 250,000-square foot office building, plus a 7-story, 140,000 square foot Behavioral Health Building in all totaling 1.48 million square feet of new construction located on a 48-acre site. The project includes two parking structures which accommodate 1,200 cars in total, all sitework and utilities. Within Children’s walls are 270 private, family-friendly patient rooms, 14 operating rooms, a Conference Center including a 190-seat auditorium, research laboratory and full-service kitchen and dining functions.
Children's hospital colorado replacement hospital
At the UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital campus, McCarthy built a new, standalone ambulatory care center. The 105,000-square-foot facility now provides the community radiation oncology, outpatient imaging, a women’s center, physical and occupational therapy and cardiopulmonary rehab. Construction was completed in just over 13 months, which can be attributed to frequent communication and coordination with the hospital and trade partners from start to finish. This project should be considered for the best building within the $40 to 70 million range due to the complexity of constructing the specific rooms and technology involved within each, the challenge of working in an active hospital, and the final product that now provides so many additional resources to the city of Longmont.

Children's Hospital Colorado East Tower Addition
aurora
Since 2004, McCarthy has constructed more than 1.8 million square-feet of medical facilities on the Children’s Hospital Colorado campus. The new 356,000-square-foot, 11-story East Tower Addition connects to the north face of the ambulatory building at the basement through the fourth floor and on the east face of the hospital building at the basement through the tenth level. Another three-story, 13,000-square-foot addition was constructed on the west side of the hospital tower at levels two through four. The McCarthy team also remodeled 87,000-square-feet of the existing hospital and ambulatory space. Renovations included expansions and relocations of the existing PICU, NICU, CICU, CPCU, Hematology/BMT, Pharmacy, and back-of-house support spaces. Several of these renovations were multi-phased to allow the existing space to remain operational during construction.

UCHealth Harmony Cancer Center Linear Accelerator Expansion
Fort Collins
The 4,883-square-foot expansion incorporated additional exam rooms, consultation space, and a third vault which houses the linear accelerator (LINAC), a machine that customizes high energy x-rays or electrons to conform to a tumor’s shape and destroy cancer cells while sparing surrounding normal tissue. The project also included a 3,048-square-foot renovation component, where the teams backfilled former exam room space and admitting areas with new designs. A significant portion of the scope included mass concrete walls, which were self-performed by McCarthy. A substantial portion of that scope was centered around the 5-foot thick, 18-feet tall accelerator bunker, which was completed in three pours with each wall and bunker lid completed in a single pour.

Lightsource BP Bighorn Solar
Pubelo
The 300MW solar project in Pueblo, Colorado is the first of two large-scale solar projects McCarthy’s Renewable Energy Group built in the area in conjunction with Lightsource bp, the project owner. Located on 1,800 acres of land on EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel property, Bighorn at the time was the largest on-site solar facility dedicated to a single customer in the country and supports the nation’s first solar powered steel mill. Completion of this project also means that EVRAZ will have access to cost effective and predictable electricity rates that help ensure the mill, with its 1,000 local workers, is able to thrive and grow in Pueblo. Setting it apart from other similar solar projects, Lightsource bp has emphasized enhancing biodiversity at Bighorn. Before construction began, McCarthy and Lightsource bp designed a site-specific seed mix, suited to the local climate, ecosystem and soil. The mix contains staple short grasses like western wheatgrass, buffalo grass and little bluestem, as well as a low concentration of purple prairie clover to provide nectar for pollinating insects to help proactively conserve the important habitat of the site over the life of the project.

Southwest Airlines Cargo & General Use Building
Denver
Southwest Airlines’ new 107,000-square-foot general use building is designed by Ghafari and Associates and will have a dual purpose. It will serve as a maintenance facility for ground service equipment such as trucks and tugs, as well as feature a paint booth, maintenance bays with lifts, an internal car wash, and training space for Southwest employees. The other portion of the building will serve as a provisioning warehouse where the airline will store drinks, snacks, ice and other service materials that are loaded onboard aircraft when they fly through DEN. The Burns & McDonnell-designed cargo facility will enhance Southwest’s Cargo handling capabilities. The 27,000-square-foot facility will include a warehouse, a front office drop-off area, and loading docks to load and unload freight from the airline’s Cargo Customers.

Power and Light district in general because there is always live music. The River Market area brings the community together every weekend for the largest flea markets.

There are so many great spots in KC. For me, a night out downtown Power and Light and/or the Crossroads is a great time. Going out for a dinner and some drinks in the Crossroads area provides so many options for restaurants and bars to check out.If you are interested in breweries, my two favorites are Boulevard and KC Bier Co. Going to Arrowhead for a Chiefs Football Game, Chicken and Pickle, a concert/basketball game at the T-Mobile Center. The Tavern at Mission Farms is an all-time favorite for a nice dinner and brunch.
- Mitch Nissen, Project Manager
For quick bites to eat, I love Longboards or the French Market in Prairie Village. For coffee, I love the Roasterie, HiHat and Cafe Corazon.

The Kauffman Center and performing arts venues are top-notch. The barbecue is unrivaled, but there are numerous, wonderful, restaurants throughout the city. Fun - whether taking a stroll on the Plaza, shopping and ice-skating at Crown Center, grabbing a drink with friends in Westport or downtown at Power & Light, visiting the shops and tables at the outdoor City Market in the River Market district, or taking the kids to the various attractions at Union Station, there is always something to do and places to go explore.
I am a huge Jayhawks fan, if you have never been to a basketball game, you have never experienced a real sporting event. The Flint Hills are amazing, a must see. Of course, Power and Light is an amazing experience. There are tons of hiking trails around here with big, beautiful trees.

At Home in his Hometown
Seth Kelso's 22-year McCarthy career has taken him across the U.S. and back to Overland Park as a member of the Kansas City leadership team.
Growing up in old Overland Park, Seth Kelso remembers pedaling his bike around the downtown district and past the historic Phoenix Building that now serves as home base for McCarthy’s Kansas City team. Kelso’s current workplace is just a stone’s throw from the former bike shop where he purchased that original two-wheeler for $211.17. “I probably remember the exact cost of the bike because it was my first big purchase,” he jokes. “I must have worked all summer mowing lawns to buy that bike.”

She has lived in London and Australia, backpacked across Asia and attended college in Virginia. But there’s nowhere Devon Murray-Mazany would rather live and work than right here in Kansas City.
On Sunday, May 22, 2011, the costliest tornado in U.S. history tore through Joplin, Missouri, killing more than 150 people and destroying nearly 4,000 buildings. The following day, Steve Meuschke received a call from a McCarthy project director inviting him to join a McCarthy delegation in southwestern Missouri. The mission: to help Mercy Hospital—a long-standing client—assess the damage and develop a plan for rebuilding its local hospital in the aftermath of the devastating twister.
Every time Matt Wasowicz steps foot onto a construction jobsite, he’s more interested in hanging out with team members than enforcing safety policies. “Construction is a people business, so I think it's important to get to know people in the field and demonstrate that I’m here to help and be a resource to them,” he says.
There’s probably no one who’s cheering the 10th anniversary of McCarthy’s Kansas City office more enthusiastically than Brad Schoen. As one of two McCarthy partners tapped to relocate from St. Louis in 2013 to manage the new office, he has overseen its steady evolution from fledgling practice to thriving local business.

I love Kansas City because this is where I was born. I have lived in several other cities with McCarthy and like this KC the best. KC culture ties in with our Core Values. Might be biased but the people are Genuine, thrive when working as a Team and will do whatever needs to be done (All-In) to get the job done.
WHat "At Home in the Heartland" means to me
For McCarthy, Kansas City is a place that we call home. Being from Kansas City I was always pushing for McCarthy to establish an office in Kansas City. I remember talking with Karl Kloster back in 2001 about this and back then the timing wasn't right but it was 10 years ago and we made the move in 2012. KC is in growth mode and I can not think of a better place for our partners to be then to be here in the Heartland growing with Kansas City.
Steve info here
Working with the team we have here and the partners on-board, small office feel, and the energy/fun we bring every day. Also best BBQ in the country and the CHIEFS!
Being one of two to start up the office over in here in KC, I have been through the good times and not so good times of getting this office off the ground. I am definitely "All-In" with the success of this office. For me, KC is more than a place I live & work, its a place where my family and I feel at home and where my wife & I want to see our children grow. We are engaged in our local community and our church. In my mind, there is no better place to live, raise a family, and grow your career. As for our office & team, we are filled with partners that want to be here and enjoy the Heartland as much as I do.
The People - they are just genuine, nice, and friendly people. The BBQ - Joe's, Jack Stack, Q39, Burnt Ends... and the list goes on. KC Chiefs - fun to have such a great team representing the city. KC Royals - and the future of a new ballpark and downtown baseball. Relatively short flight to anywhere in the USA (and a new airport to boot). As it relates to McCarthy, I love that we have such a great team, and we are building a great business for McCarthy here in KC.
I think a lot of our partners love Kansas City and want it to be the place they plant their flag for their career, so to me it basically means that KC is home to us all and we are a family of partners working to make KC successful. Beyond that, I think McCarthy is becoming part of the fabric of Kansas City. It took 10 years, but we have crossed the threshold of being a company doing business in KC to a company that is part of KC's culture.
Kansas City has so many things to offer, it's hard to nail that down. For the most part, our city has such great, relatable people.
It's where we all call home and where we serve our communities.
Senior project manager
For me Kansas City is home. I was born and raised in Kansas City and after working in other parts of the nation I'm thankful that I'm able to raise my family in Kansas City with McCarthy. Kansas City is the Heartland not because of the KC logo within the hear made famous by Charlie Hustle but because of the people of Kansas City. KC is a big - small town. The city has the comforts that you would expect from a big city, but the people have the attitude of small-town America.
Preconstruction manager
This theme for our company, to me, means simply that this is our home and we are here to stay. We are not a St. Louis contractor in KC. For all of our staff here, this is our home. Our homes are here, our family and friends are here, our lives are here.
Favorite things about kansas city
One of my favorite things about Kansas City is the people. Most people you meet are friendly and caring with a willingness and want to help others. I really enjoy the big city vibe with a small town feel. The city is big enough to have many cool places to see and hangout, within a smaller radius making it easy to get to and high probability you run into someone you know.
Proximity to Family, Midwest City Values, large enough city for things to do, without the traffic/crime, sports teams.
senior regional safety manager
It has everything you want out of a big city but does not have the big city feel. The sports teams, the food scene, nightlife, just enjoy the overall feel of the city.
what does "at home in the heartland" mean to me?
Kansas City is where I call home and it's been great seeing the office grow since I moved here in 2015. Our office has a family feel and I've been super proud to be part of this group and watch our growth and continued success here.
Kansas City is very similar to the culture where I grew up in St. Louis, MO. There is a strong sense of community and pride within Kansas City. The area is growing, and it is a fantastic opportunity for McCarthy to position themselves within a city that continues to evolve and grow. Really enjoy the areas around Kansas City as great food and entertainment make for a fun and exciting area to live.
I have lived in the "heartland" for my entire life. Grew up here, worked on several projects across the mid-west, and plan to retire here. This is my home. Don't think that the heartland gets as much attention as either coast since this is considered "fly over country" to a good majority of the US. But to me, and a lot of other people who live in this area, it is a great place to raise a family and call home.
Kansas City is a big city small town feel where the connections feel genuine. McCarthy has a great group here between our Healthcare and Water Teams. The projects we work on here in Kansas City from our recent completion of the JCW Tomahawk Creek WWTP project to the projects ongoing with Advent Health make me proud to say I work for McCarthy. We continue to grow and get better every day here in KC. Kansas City is a great place to live, work and have a little fun too!
Kansas City has heart and you see it with the support of our local businesses and our community. Kansas City has grown so much in the last 20 years. I was born here and have seen our city grow to the great place it is today.
Paul Hason
estimating manager
I love the wholesome feel. There is a sense of genuine camaraderie. People are genuine, upfront and honest. We rally around great causes.
Whether you are just visiting Kansas City or you live here you feel at home when you are here.

Celebrating 10 years in Kansas city
A compelling factor in attracting and retaining top talent, according to Kelso, is McCarthy’s unique culture. “With a 100 percent employee-owned company, everybody gets to share in the company’s success, which I think is important to create the ownership culture that has made us so successful,” he says. Since returning to the region, Kelso has also become active in supporting a wide range of community organizations, including Hope Kids, Hope Builders, Habitat for Humanity and Harvesters. In January, he joined the city of Olathe’s Economic Development Council for a two-year term, after which he will serve on the board of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce. He also joined the board for Bio Kansas, which advances the state’s growing bioscience ecosystem. Kelso is eager to continue building his career in the community that provided such a strong foundation for his life. “It's ironic that I wanted to work for a company where I got to travel outside of Kansas City, and two decades later, I’m back and couldn’t be more excited to be here,” he says.
With that project under his belt, Kelso can now boast that he has overseen construction of more than a quarter of the nation’s BSL-4 facilities and more than 50 percent of the total square footage of those high-containment facilities. Back Home Again In summer 2020, Kelso embarked on his latest career chapter: moving back to his hometown and joining the four-person leadership team of McCarthy’s Kansas City office. As market leader, he works alongside Vice President of Operations Steve Meuschke, Director of Business Development Jeff Bennett and Preconstruction Director Brad Schoen to position McCarthy’s KC practice for the future. “I’m focused on our overall strategic direction and team culture,” says Kelso. “Our current focus is on Healthcare, Science & Technology and Water projects, all of which directly support the health of our people and our communities.” As McCarthy marks the 10th anniversary of its KC office, Kelso is excited to expand its regional impact. “We're now working for four of the major healthcare providers in Kansas City and have a lot of repeat clients,” he says. “We love getting the opportunity to show clients what we can do. Once they meet our people, they’re always impressed.”
Those efforts helped generate a pair of monumental project wins. The first was the VA New Orleans Replacement Medical Center, a 1.7-million-square-foot campus that replaced critical infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Katrina. McCarthy delivered the project as part of a joint venture with Clark Construction Group. And the second project was the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF), a BSL-4 lab in Manhattan, Kansas, that would replace the Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York. Right up Kelso’s alley, he spent about a year working on the preconstruction phase from St. Louis before relocating to Manhattan in 2010 to complete the decade-long project, a McCarthy-Mortenson joint venture. Commissioned by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NBAF is a state-of-the-art facility for conducting research, developing vaccines, performing diagnostic testing, and training researchers and veterinarians to recognize the clinical signs of foreign animal diseases in livestock. “It's the only large animal BS-4 facility in the U.S. and the only BSL-4 lab constructed to withstand a direct hit by an F5 tornado,” he says.
Further complicating the scenario, the CDC project broke ground shortly before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which prompted a temporary shutdown of the job and subsequent design modifications that increased the total square footage of the facility. During the 4-1/2 years Kelso lived in the Peachtree State, he also helped launch McCarthy’s permanent Atlanta office; got married to his college sweetheart, Becky; and became a father (daughter McKenzie is now 17). In 2006, Kelso relocated to Boston for 2-1/2 years to work on the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories, a BSL-4 lab project on Boston University’s medical campus. McCarthy constructed the project in a joint venture with Turner Construction Company. He and his wife also became parents again, this time to a son, Hunter (who’s currently 14). After that project wrapped up, Kelso moved back to St. Louis for a couple of years to assist with project pursuits and conduct market research that laid the foundation for a new business unit focused on delivering projects for the federal government.
One of the first projects Kelso worked on was assembling a concrete estimate for a planned expansion of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) campus in Atlanta. Lucky for him, McCarthy won the job and Kelso was tapped to join the project team…an opportunity he relished. “Even though I enjoyed estimating, I wanted to get out in the field and build a job,” he says,” and Atlanta seemed like a cool place to live for a few years.” What Kelso didn’t realize at the time is that the CDC job would profoundly shape the course of his construction career by equipping him with specialized expertise in constructing high-containment research labs. These secure environments are designed and built with the primary function of protecting individuals and communities from microorganisms, infectious agents and other toxins. And the CDC project involved constructing a biosafety level four (BSL-4) facility, which provides maximum protection and containment from agents that pose a high risk of life-threatening disease. “There hadn't been a BSL-4 lab built in the U.S. since the ‘50s or ‘60s, so all of us were forging new ground and we had a lot to figure out…but McCarthy people love a good challenge,” says Kelso.
Instead, he found his footing in the university’s construction management program. “I didn’t go to college knowing that I was going to study construction,” he says, “but I had a few older friends from high school who were enrolled in that program, so that was the draw.” During Kelso’s senior year, one of his professors encouraged him to connect with McCarthy at an upcoming campus recruiting event. “He pulled me aside and said, ‘you ought to check these guys out.’” He followed that advice and ended up signing on as a McCarthy project engineer in January 2001. “What really attracted me to McCarthy was the opportunity to move around and see the U.S. right out of school,” he says. Journey to the Field Though Kelso was eager to join a McCarthy construction team in the field, he was initially assigned to the estimating team in St. Louis instead. “I was super bummed, but it was actually the best thing that happened to me because estimating is such an important foundational skill to have,” he notes.
“I must have worked all summer mowing lawns to buy that bike.” Early memories of attending Royals and Chiefs games with his parents and older sister cultivated a love of team sports that continues to this day. As a boy, Kelso honed his athletic skills on the soccer field before shifting to baseball in middle school and excelling on the varsity football team at Shawnee Mission North High School. Kelso had planned to extend his football legacy as a walk-on player on Pittsburg State University’s Division II football team, but those ambitions were sidelined by ankle surgery he underwent the summer before his freshman year.

Local Business Shout-out
One of our favorite local spots that we had to give our first shout-out to is none other than the famous "The Peanut" - the oldest bar and grill in the area! The Overland Park location is right next door to our McCarthy office, and we frequent this fine establishment so often, we affectionately refer to it as our "large conference room." The food is exceptional, the service is fantastic, and it's a great place for a casual lunch meeting or fun spot to watch the game!
