Role of radiation
If you are referred to radiation therapy during your cancer care, you have a choice on where to receive treatment. Valley Regional Cancer Center is proud to offer state-of-the-art radiation therapy, close to home.
Radiation therapy is used to treat almost every type of cancer and even several non-cancerous conditions.
Treatment can be delivered before or after surgery as an effective way to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence, to treat cancer that has spread, or to ease symptoms caused by advanced cancer.
Our radiation oncologist works closely with medical and surgical oncology, diagnostics, pathology, genetic risk evaluation, and supportive care to deliver unparalleled continuity of care.
Treatment approach
During your consultation, our radiation oncologist will complete a virtual simulation on specialized software to help guide your personalized care plan.
They will determine the correct body position to maximize treatment to the affected area while avoiding healthy tissue.
Conduct imaging scans to pinpoint the treatment area.
Make reference marks in or near the targeted tissue for treatment positioning.

Treatment methods
External radiation therapy uses high-energy X-ray or electron beams delivered by a linear accelerator and aimed at specific points on the body.
These breakthrough technologies permits our radiation oncology team to treat more challenging types of cancer and develop individualized treatment plans for patients.

Physicians may recommend radiation prior to surgery to shrink the size of the tumor or when the location restricts surgical options. Patients may be advised to receive radiation after surgery to remove remaining cancer cells.
Internal radiation therapy involves the implantation of radioactive material directly into the body.
Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) combines 3-D images, such as CT scans, with the precise technology of either 3-D or intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to pinpoint and treat cancerous tumors. Daily images are taken prior to treatment for accuracy and precise treatment delivery.
Breast cancer treatment
MammoSite delivers a high daily dose of HDR brachytherapy to the area where breast cancer is most likely to recur after a lumpectomy. MammoSite works from inside the body via a discrete balloon catheter system implanted in the breast lumpectomy cavity. The system is in place for five days with treatments given twice a day, versus other treatments that may take five to seven weeks.
MammoSite®
SAVI™
Contura™
The SAVI applicator delivers a high daily dose of HDR brachytherapy via multiple catheters that allow clinicians to contour the radiation and protect nearby healthy tissue. This approach provides great flexibility in the delivery of the radiation.
The balloon delivers a high daily dose of HDR brachytherapy via five channels for the radioactive source. These channels allow clinicians to shape the radiation and administer radiation only where it is needed, thus protecting healthy tissue. Treatment time is decreased to just five days versus up to seven weeks.
Radiation in combination with surgery
Radiation to relieve symptoms
Radiation with chemotherapy
Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT)
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an advanced form of external radiation treatment that allows precise targeting of tumor cells. The CT simulator localization scan or other 3-D images provide the radiation oncologist with an understanding of the shape and location of the tumor, increasing treatment accuracy while avoiding surrounding healthy tissue and organs.
Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)
Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is an advanced type of radiation therapy that delivers high doses of radiation using several beams of varying intensity aimed at a very targeted area of the body. Due to the high intensity of the radiation dose, only one to five treatments are given over a period of 1 to 5 days.
Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)
This machine rotates around the body and uses specialized software and advanced equipment technology to allow highly accurate treatments to be delivered more quickly than standard radiation treatments.
High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy
HDR brachytherapy utilizes radioactive material inserted into applicators within body cavities or tissues near the tumor. HDR brachytherapy is a temporary implant conducted in the outpatient setting and minimizes treatment time. HDR allows for radiation directly at the tumor bed, avoiding surrounding tissue by treating the tumor from the inside out.

Radiation therapy can be used as a main treatment or in combination with chemotherapy.
Radiation therapy may be recommended to relieve symptoms by reducing the size of the tumor and its effects on surrounding organs and tissues.
Gynecologic cancer treatment
HDR is used to treat gynecologic cancers by delivering radiation internally and precisely targeting the tumor, minimizing the impact on the surrounding healthy tissue and limiting side effects. An applicator is inserted internally and is removed once treatment is complete. Treatment time is significantly reduced to three to six treatments lasting 10 to 20 minutes each.
HDR
Qualifying patients will be able to receive treatment in as few as six to seven sessions, compared to as many as 35 treatments with other options.
Our advanced technology allows us to target tumors precisely, delivering efficient and accurate treatment while protecting vital organs and surrounding tissue, thereby reducing the number of side effects.
Our physician will customize a personalized treatment plan for each patient. We provide a range of treatment options for various types of cancer.
A respiratory monitoring system allows patients to breathe naturally and comfortably during treatment while ensuring accurate targeting of tumors. Through a two-way communication system, a clinician can stay in constant contact with the patient for the entirety of their treatment.
We work to accommodate your schedule so you can continue with your daily activities. Our office is located in Peru, eliminating the need for daily travel to Chicago for treatment.

“I can’t say enough about Dr. O and his amazing staff. From day one I knew I was going to be treated as a person and not just a number on a chart. The staff worked with me to arrange the best times for my treatment and each time I had an appointment, I felt like was going to visit friends. My treatments ended last week, and I can definitely say I miss my care team already.”

In February, our practice was impacted by the national outage experienced by Change Healthcare because of a cyberattack. Change Healthcare is a healthcare technology company, part of Optum and United Healthcare, that provides services used by much of
the US healthcare system, including our practice.
We have remained in close contact with Change Healthcare as
they investigate and address this issue.
Change Healthcare has begun issuing customer notifications related to the February 2024 cyberattack. On April 22, 2024, Change Healthcare publicly confirmed the impacted data could cover a substantial proportion of people in America. More recently, on June 20, 2024, Change Healthcare notified our practice’s management company that some of its data was compromised.
At this time, Valley Radiation Oncology has not been notified of any specific patients of the practice whose protected health information has been affected by the incident. But in the coming weeks, as a result of this security incident, you may receive a direct notification from
Change Health Care indicating that you have been impacted.
Should you be among those affected, Change Health Care
has taken steps to address the situation. They have established a dedicated website at https://www.changehealthcare.com/hipaa-substitute-notice, where you can access valuable resources. Additionally, they have set up a dedicated call center at 866-262-5342, which provides complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection
for a period of two years to those impacted.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate event.
Thank you for your understanding and patience.
