Community oncology serves a diverse patient population. Inherent in that service is the need to consider how social determinants of health (SDOH) affect care and outcomes. By mitigating the impact of SDOH, we can help reduce disparities and improve health.
Data is our best opportunity to understand the role of SDOH in cancer care. As a catalyst of advancement and curator of real-world data and insights, we are pursuing several initiatives to drive more equitable access to diagnoses, therapies and care and to improve outcomes among diverse patients.
What are social determinants of health (SDOH)?
The conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.
Our Initiatives
We are working to address SDOH on multiple fronts – integrating experience, intelligence and hope into next-generation cancer care. Here’s how:
Health Outcomes Powered by Evidence (HOPE) Studies
We designated that the first round of our HOPE Studies program is focused on health disparities, with specific research questions about how social determinants of health play a role in treatment for prostate and breast cancers.
ABOUT
HOPE Studies
Leveraging our fit-for-purpose real-world data (RWD) and extensive oncology expertise, our research helps to expand access and improve outcomes.

ABOUT
Clinical Data Views
We are integrating third-party SDOH data sets with the existing data. This will enable us to link our patient records with additional
economic and social indicators such as income, education, occupation, household size, etc. to help life sciences tackle the key questions regarding patients’ access to care & treatment.
Leveraging third-party sources to enrich our SDOH datasets
We are continuously improving our provider technology solutions, such as the oncology-focused iKnowMed electronic health record, to generate more SDOH information from patient and provider interactions.

We are creating a new SDOH Working Group, with practices in The US Oncology Network, the University of Maryland – C. Daniel Mullins, PhD, Chair, Pharmaceutical Health Services Research, and other researchers in the University of Maryland’s PATIENTS Program. Ontada is leading this effort designed to assess the current SDOH landscape in community oncology. This working group will be foundational to increasing the visibility of existing challenges and opportunities on SDOH in the community setting, while identifying additional areas of scientific inquiry.

We are participating in the Gravity Project,
a multi-stakeholder collaboration of payers, providers, vendors and community-based organizations formed to create national standards for representing SDOH in EHRs.
