Click the points above to follow the loss rate for every 100 field-grown tomatoes destined to be sold fresh in developed countries.
These tomatoes are left in the field and can be used as organic fertilizer, turned into animal feed or biofuels, or simply discarded.
En route from the field, a couple more tomatoes are tossed out.
The tomatoes are then washed and sorted. Those that do not meet standards are discarded.
A couple packaged tomatoes are either damaged or rejected as “outgraded” produce and end up being discarded.
After losses due to damage or incorrect shipping, 59–72 fresh tomatoes ultimately survive the full journey.
