Save the corn maze and apple cider doughnuts for next year. Instead, spend a fall weekend at these Main Street festivals that will immerse you in overseas cultures, nautical craftsmanship, and even a polka contest.

INTERVIEW
On the Move in San Francisco
ITINERARY
Scott McKenzie’s 1967 pop anthem, “San Francisco,” helped draw thousands to the city for the Summer of Love. If you’re going to San Francisco today, you don’t need to wear flowers in your hair, but you’ll still see people in motion — on bridges, boats, and cable cars, as well as on foot, through historic neighborhoods full of local color and global cuisine.
When you arrive back at Pier 33, stroll or take public transit about 1 mile down The Embarcadero, San Francisco’s waterfront promenade, to the Ferry Building. A landmark since 1898, it’s a gateway to the city, a civic gathering space, and a marketplace with many local, independently owned shops and restaurants. Have a late lunch here if you didn’t eat on Angel Island, or just do some grazing while gazing at the bay.
Afternoon
Tap into the Bay Area’s Spanish heritage with tapas at El Lopo, a neighborhood bar in Lower Nob Hill. The menu changes daily, but plates like lamb meatballs with sherry pepper sauce and slow-cooked octopus with squid ink potatoes are meant to be shared and savored.
BroadwaySF brings marquee theater experiences to venerable venues such as the Orpheum Theatre, Golden Gate Theatre, and Curran Theatre. Choose from hits fresh off Broadway, original Broadway cast productions, and pre-Broadway premieres. Wicked bewitches audiences at the Orpheum this fall (August 28–October 13). After the curtain calls, stop for a nightcap at Harper & Rye. Sample cocktails named for the owners’ loved ones and an impressive selection of whiskeys. The Tom & Coco, a strong take on an espresso martini, invigorates the senses with cold-brew coffee, coffee liqueur, and chocolate bitters.
Evening
Golden Gate Park’s global diversity extends to eateries on and near the grounds. For dinner, let Park Gyros in the Sunset District stamp your culinary passport with flavors from its Mediterranean menu. Try a lamb and beef gyro wrap served in lavash bread with tzatziki sauce, or go for the chicken kebab plate with tender cubes of marinated, charcoal-grilled meat.
After dinner, hop on a clanging cable car to ride the city’s steep hills. The world’s last manual cable car system pulls cars along via cables embedded in the street. Though equipment has been refurbished over the years, the experience feels much like the first ride in 1873. You can also zip around on a similar, somewhat newer transit mode: streetcars. They feature electric motors and trolley poles that draw power from overhead wires.
Cables are also key to San Francisco’s two signature suspension bridges. The Golden Gate Bridge grabs most of the glory and gazes, but the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is stunning in its own right, especially at night, when a magical light display turns it into a work of structural art. Marvel from almost anywhere along the waterfront. It’s one of the best shows in town, and it’s free.
Evening
Fillmore Street is also a famous name in San Francisco music history, and that’s where you’ll find Alamo Square Cafe. Order lunch to go and have a picnic atop the grassy hill at nearby Alamo Square Park, where you can admire the beloved Painted Ladies, a passel of pastel Victorian homes across the street (aka Postcard Row). The park also boasts a playground, off-leash dog area, and walking trails.
Another must-experience green space is Golden Gate Park, more than 1,000 acres of lawns, gardens, lakes, meadows, art, structures, and wildlife in the heart of San Francisco. The marvelous Conservatory of Flowers, the park’s oldest building, has housed rare tropical plants and flowers from around the world since 1879. Its Victorian doors are a portal to distant lands and ecosystems, such as the tropical rainforests of Sumatra and the cloud forests of Ecuador.
Afternoon
Say bonjour with brunch at Zazie, a French bistro in the Cole Valley neighborhood for more than 30 years. Named for the main character in a Louis Malle film, the cafe elevates eggs with an octet of oeufs Benedict variations, all ladled with luscious lemon Hollandaise sauce. The La Mer version adds hand-picked California Dungeness crab and avocados. Scrambled eggs come in eight international translations, plus there’s Pain de Mie French Toast.
After breakfast, indulge in helpings of hippie history on the Haight Ashbury Flower Power Walking Tour, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays in the adjacent Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Stroll streets that influenced 1960s counterculture and became the epicenter for the 1967 Summer of Love. You’ll pass homes where music legends like Janis Joplin once lived. The Grateful Dead spent part of their trip here, too. After the tour, stick around to shop the neighborhood’s colorful and quirky boutiques.
morning
Your visit is coming to an end: Town’s End Brunch, just off The Embarcadero and near the Bay Bridge. Take your pick of omelets, Benedicts, and skillets, plus practically anything on toast or biscuits. The weighty Warriors Breakfast targets the hungriest road warriors — or perhaps the city’s pro basketball team. Call it the breakfast of seven-time NBA champions.
Speaking of champions, the San Francisco Giants, eight-time World Series winners (including three in San Fran), play baseball down the road — and along the bay — at Oracle Park, one of MLB’s most picturesque stadiums. Tours start at 10:30 a.m. year-round. Get a behind-the-seats look at the park and check out McCovey Cove, where fans floating in boats and kayaks await “splash hit” home runs. Willie Mays Plaza outside the park honors the Giants great who died in June of this year. Across the street, check out the Willie Mays “Say Hey” Experience for artifacts, photographs, and videos.

With Massanutten Resort in Virginia as your base, eager adventurers and laid-back vacationers alike can delve into all the Shenandoah Valley has to offer. Here’s where to find sky-scraping summits, challenging golf, and tranquil massages.
All of Shenandoah National Park is at your fingertips on Skyline Drive. The 105-mile road is the park’s spine, running along the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, past the fall foliage and the deer and bears that call the park home. When you get out of the car, choose from more than 500 miles of hiking trails, including the collection of paths that lead to the summit of Old Rag Mountain. Ascending to the popular summit — the most-visited destination in the park — yields a splendid 360-degree view of the valley. For an easier circuit with its own impressive view, try the 1-mile hike to Blackrock Summit, or head to Quicksburg for an underground trip to marvel at Shenandoah Caverns’ stalactites and stalagmites.

If you’re up for a little friendly competition, grab your clubs and hit the links at Massanutten Resort. Woodstone Meadows Golf Course is suited for both beginners, who can rent clubs if needed, and seasoned golfers looking for a low score with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. The tree-lined fairways at the PGA-rated Mountain Greens Golf Course throw down a tougher gauntlet before you even size up the M-shaped bunker in front of the green on the eighth. Back at the resort, you’ll find an aquatic playground rain or shine. A pair of twisting, 250-foot slides will deposit you in the pool at the Indoor WaterPark, though you can also try to surf on The Pipeline’s man-made waves before winding down in the Shenandoah Hot Springs hot tub.

It’s time to truly, fully escape from the stress of everyday life. That calls for the Massanutten Signature Massage, 90 minutes of moderate to firm pressure that will melt away any sources of tension, at The Spa at Massanutten. Add in a peppermint back scrub or a tea tree scalp massage for ultimate relaxation. For a laid-back afternoon, embark on the Shenandoah Valley Wine Trail, where you can leisurely sip at one of 22 tasting rooms. If you’d prefer to stop at multiple vineyards, where the limestone soil and limited rainfall nurture the grapes, let Shenandoah Wine Tours in Edinburg do the driving. More picture-perfect views — and a ride through the mile-long Blue Ridge Tunnel — await on a round-trip Virginia Scenic Railway excursion in Staunton. Each ticket includes a meal, so sit back with your bistro-style chicken or pulled-pork sandwich and simply gaze out at the countryside.

Go the Extra Mile
Start in the Outer Sunset neighborhood with a healthy yet hearty breakfast at Beach’n SF. Try plant-based comfort food like a tofu scramble, or opt for vegan French toast and gluten-free hash cakes smothered with house-made cashew “cheese sauce." The restaurant also showcases local art, including a wave mural around the entrance.
Next, cruise across San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island, the small island with a larger-than-life history as a fortress-like federal penitentiary. Alcatraz City Cruises offers a tour that departs midmorning for Alcatraz and larger Angel Island. At Alcatraz, hear chilling stories from real prisoners and correctional officers on an award-winning audio tour, and imagine living in a dank solitary confinement cell. Angel Island, once an immigration station and now a beautiful state park, has a cafe where you can grab a quick, casual lunch. Allow five and a half hours to visit both islands, and book a tour well in advance.

Dawn, whether frosty or simply cool, is the best time to walk or ride the Galena River Trail. The 8-mile, crushed-rock path follows both its namesake and the footprint of the now-defunct railroad, skirting the Mississippi River and the Indigenous mounds at Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve. For late starters, brunch at Otto’s will brighten your morning as much as any sunrise. Go for the breakfast sando with pork belly and scrambled eggs or indulge your sweet tooth with honey butter-topped French toast. To further tingle your taste buds, mosey over to Blaum Bros. Distilling Co. Peer over Matt and Mike Blaum’s stills and fermenters during a distillery tour, or camp out with craft cocktails at the distillers’ Public House on Main Street. Your day’s grand finale? Galena’s 44th Annual Halloween Parade & Festival October 26. Marching bands and spooky floats meander down North Main Street through the cool evening air. You’ll want to bring your best costume, too. The local ghosts and ghouls take this parade seriously.
You may very well mistake fall in Myrtle Beach for summer elsewhere. Take advantage of the sun and sand by strolling along the beach-bordering Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Let that inner child loose at one of the arcades or enjoy a coastal view with an ice cream cone in hand. If you save your appetite, you might be ready for the free spaghetti-eating contest at the Irish Italian International Festival in North Myrtle Beach on September 28. Float between food vendors and dance to music from both Irish- and Italian-specific stages. In the evening, head over to PopStroke, the Tiger Woods-backed mini golf course that challenges players with scaled-down fairways and bunkers. Just off the Intracoastal Waterway, Crooked Hammock Brewery is your spot for a brew, maybe the appropriately named Beach Escape IPA or the Haulin’ Oats stout, an oatmeal- and chocolate-flavored beer destined to be your dessert.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
German immigrants founded Fredericksburg in the heart of Texas Hill Country more than 175 years ago, and you’ll have no trouble finding their roots these days. The Pioneer Museum includes the Vereins Kirche Museum, a replica of the “Society Church” that also served as the settlers’ school and meeting place. A lap of the octagonal building reveals 19th-century photos, artifacts, and a table-top model of the German downtown. Today, art galleries festoon Main Street. Pop into The Good Art Company and peruse the landscape, still life, and abstract paintings for your own artistic inspiration or purchase. You’ll find another Hill Country export down the street: wine. Try to grab the small sidewalk table at Narrow Path Winery & Vineyard’s downtown tasting room and sip the small-batch whites and reds it crafts almost a half-hour east of town. Over at downtown’s Marktplatz, Fredericksburg Oktoberfest (October 4–6) is your spot for a weekend’s worth of Deutschland heritage. Test your arm in the stein-hoisting competition — or your feet in the polka contest. Or simply grab a chilled Hefeweizen and tap your foot to the nonstop parade of German bands.
Fredericksburg, Texas
Perched on the northeast point of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, Port Townsend is sweater-weather nirvana. Bundle up for a windswept morning at Fort Worden Historical State Park for a low-tide stroll along the beach trail, and meander toward the Point Wilson Lighthouse on the northern edge of Puget Sound. Look inland to spy the Olympic Mountains behind the old fort, a former defense against foreign invasion that now houses a museum. On the water is where you’ll find the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, the largest such event on the continent. September 6–8, more than 300 wooden vessels fill Point Hudson Marina, where visitors can admire their craftsmanship before touring the berths via longboat or attend a boat-making discussion or demonstration. Another afternoon option: a self-guided walking tour from the Jefferson County Historical Society that leads visitors to 24 historic sites — including the Victorian Hastings Building — across the former seaport’s downtown. Farm-to-table fare awaits at Finistère, where you can share small plates of fried oysters and Dungeness crab.

A rugged, 68-acre coastline awaits at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, inviting you on an oceanfront adventure of San Diego’s coastal bluffs, sea caves, and arched rock formations. Hike the trails that trace this beautiful stretch along the Pacific Ocean, offering panoramic views from atop dramatic cliffs. The coastline transforms at low tide, revealing tide pools teeming with crabs, fish, and sea anemones. Refuel with a meal, dining al fresco at The Little Lion Cafe for a cozy brunch, or enjoy fresh seafood at Ketch Grill and Taps. Their delicious fare comes with a side of gorgeous beach or harbor backdrop. To soak in the mesmerizing sunsets, find the perfect spot on the bluffs or along Ladera Street or Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.
The Explorer
With its serene landscape and laid-back attitude, Oceanside is an inviting place to catch some vitamin sea. Lounge with a book on Pier View North Beach, a quiet beach just north of the boardwalk, or savor the shoreline from a birds-eye view during a rooftop yoga session with Delve Together. Oceanside is one of the first designated cultural districts in California, and vibrant murals draw on tattoo art and surf-and-skate culture. Support artisans and search for vintage wares at boutiques in Artist Alley or Sea Hive Marketplace, a 13,000-square-foot shopping complex with over 100 small businesses. Find your next muse at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA), where your ticket grants access to stimulating and thought-provoking works of regional art. For local flavors, head to the city’s Sunset Market each Thursday evening for a festival-like celebration of street food, live music, and merchandise.
The Relaxer
Time travel to California’s past at Cabrillo National Monument,
a 160-acre park nestled on the southern tip of San Diego’s Point Loma Peninsula. At the visitors center, exhibits tell the stories of the region’s early explorers. That includes Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who claimed the San Diego area for Spain in the 16th century. The
Old Point Loma Lighthouse was built about 300 years later and was hailed as the highest in the United States, towering more than
400 feet above the water. You can climb to the top on Open Tower Days, where you can get a glimpse of some avian wildlife. As a stop on the Pacific Flyway, Cabrillo is a birders paradise — over 270 species have been spotted throughout the park. Bring your binoculars and head to the prime birding spot on the west side of the park. Try to spot a black oystercatcher on the rocky shore.

Refuel with a meal, dining al fresco at The Little Lion Cafe for a cozy brunch, or enjoy fresh seafood
at Ketch Grill and Taps. Their delicious fare comes with a side
of gorgeous beach or harbor backdrop. To soak in the mesmerizing sunsets, find the perfect spot on the bluffs or along Ladera Street or Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.

Time travel to California’s past at Cabrillo National Monument, a 160-acre park nestled on the southern tip of San Diego’s Point Loma Peninsula. At the visitors center, exhibits tell the stories of the region’s early explorers. That includes Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who claimed the San Diego area for Spain in the 16th century. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse was built about 300 years later and was hailed as the highest in the United States, towering more than 400 feet above the water.
The History Buff

My favorite golfer growing up would be Payne Stewart. He's from the same hometown as my parents. I just love watching him and love his style.
Who was your favorite golfer growing up?
Arnold Palmer. Just getting to meet him, to know him a little bit before he passed away, was such a special thing. He did so much for the game of golf.
Who is your favorite golfer of all time?
03/10
A putting drill I do around the hole. I put four tees 3 feet around the hole, and I have to make 12 in a row before I can do anything else on the putting green.
What is your favorite practice drill?
04/10
Stretching. As I've gotten older, the body doesn't cool down like it used to. I can’t just hop up and do something else. So definitely a 15- or 20-minute stretch after a round, every time.
What is your favorite post-round activity?
05/10
My favorite snack for the golf course is beef jerky. You don't have to worry about it getting overheated. It’s a good protein source and has salt in it, so it checks a bunch of boxes.
What is your favorite snack to eat on the course?
06/10
Happy Gilmore. I’m a big Adam Sandler fan. I think he did a great job with that one. It’s really funny and fun to watch. Whenever it's on, I end up sticking around and watching the whole thing. I think I’ve seen it a hundred times now.
What is your favorite golf movie?
07/10
My favorite golfing buddy is probably my son now; he's 11. He's gotten into it and it's something he really likes to do, so I love doing it with him. I grew up golfing with my dad and my brothers, so having that time with him is awesome.
Who is your favorite golfing buddy?
08/10
I'm a big outdoorsman, and I love fishing and hunting. I love getting out on a boat any time I can and getting out of cell phone service range, so I can't be bothered. I just enjoy being in nature.
What is your favorite nongolf activity or hobby?
09/10
My favorite way to relax and recharge would be on a beach somewhere. There’s nothing like white sand and clear water, somewhere where it's warm and tropical. If there’s a beach involved, I'm in.
