Kona,
Hawaii
Don’t wait for a life milestone to make a getaway to the Kona Coast of Hawaii. Experiencing this idyllic island setting is a life milestone.
Kona checks off all the items on that Hawaii vacation wish list in your head: crystal-blue water, white-sand beaches, vivid sunsets, fragrant tropical blooms, aquatic wildlife, exotic cuisine, and volcanoes (active or not). Hugging the west coast of Hawaii (aka the Big Island), the sunny Kona region is sheltered from winds by Mauna Loa (one of the volcanoes) and famous for the namesake coffee grown on local farms. It’s also a hub of Hawaiian history, the place where both explorer Captain James Cook and legendary King Kamehameha spent their last days.
Kona feels like a world of its own where time seems to slow down — or even come to a standstill, especially when you’re relaxing in, on, or by the water. It all starts with the beaches. Manini‘owali Beach, in Kua Bay, and Hāpuna Beach, a bit farther north, rank among the country’s best. (Hāpuna has been ranked as one of the best beaches in America by The Travel Channel.) They’re the epitome of the proverbial Polynesian paradise: fine white sand, calm and clear water, and CGI-like scenery. If you can escape the indulgent inertia on the beach (nobody says you have to), there’s still more to see and do in Kona.
Epic Views
Tropical fish parade past as you snorkel near the shore, where a monk seal may be sunbathing or a sea turtle comes up for air between seaweed salad courses. Hike stark lava landscapes and skirt fish ponds built long ago — they now shelter endangered wetland birds. Hualālai volcano looms in the misty distance.

Atlanta has one of the most diverse cultures of cuisine I've had the privilege of eating. The cuisine prepared in Atlanta continues to evolve year after year, blending the fusion and foundation of Southern cooking, which is the stepping stone to great food and merges its roots with flavors from around the country. Atlanta leads the charge when it comes to brunch and inspires the palate, regardless of where you’re from. When you come to Atlanta, there's always an open seat at the table, showcasing something you love.
Can you explain the Atlanta food scene and how it has evolved over the past few years?
A
Q
A cast-iron skillet, chef's knife, wok, pressure cooker, and wooden spoon.
What are your must-have kitchen tools and gadgets?
01/10
I have two!
1. Rosemary and Mint Lamb Chops
2. Smoky Seafood Mac and Cheese
What’s your favorite dish to cook?
New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp. Check out my cookbook Southern Inspired for my unique family recipe.
What’s your favorite dish to eat?
Eight years.
How long have you lived in Atlanta?
I love to relax at some of Atlanta's best jazz clubs and connect with friends at exclusive cigar lounges in the city. #ChefCigarAficionado
What’s your favorite nonfood-related thing to do in Atlanta?
There are so many qualities I love about Atlanta! While in the city, experience the World of Coca-Cola. From there, journey to Stone Mountain; it's an amazing climb up and the view is well worth it — I’ve completed it five times. For a relaxing escape from the ordinary, cruise on over to Jeju Sauna. Check out the Woodruff Arts Center for art or take a short trip to The Battery Atlanta, which has eateries, movies, bowling, and more — and it’s home to the Atlanta Braves.
What are some hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path activities visitors should plan for on their next trip to Atlanta?
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
What’s your favorite vacation destination?
Order a passport ID to have in your hotel room in the event you lose your identification card. That way, you have a backup to get home, or can have funds wired to you.
What’s your No. 1 travel tip?
I always suggest experiencing the area you’re visiting. Explore the land to get the true essence of your journey. Break away from commercial dining and try restaurants recommended by locals. Ask the locals where they dine, and you’ll find the true culture of your destination.
What advice would you give travelers looking to try local fare on their next vacation?

Featuring foodie intel about Atlanta.
To score a table at this tiny French bistro, make reservations well ahead of your trip. The three-course meal is a splurge, but it’s an investment in excellence. The Duck Cassoulet and Lobster Bisque rate high, the wine list befits a restaurant whose name is French for Burgundy, and the chef-owner visits your table to personally go over the menu choices.
La Bourgogne
Be bowled over by the variations on poke, the quintessential Hawaiian dish of diced and seasoned raw fish — this spot has some of the island’s best. “Umeke” is Hawaiian for bowl, and the place prides itself on getting the freshest catch to your eating vessel (boat to bowl, if you will). The fish tacos have their own fan base.
Umekes Fish Market Bar and Grill
Bite your way to bicoastal bliss with the local flavors in the New York strip steak — it’s coated in a garlic Kona coffee rub and topped with grilled Maui onions. The dishes on the diverse menu are upscale, scratch-made, and farm-to-table fresh, while the atmosphere is casual and the pace relaxed.
Foster’s Kitchen (two locations)
culinary experiences
Feel like a VIP as you fly into misty valleys and hover above towering waterfalls and sheer cliff faces. One popular Paradise Helicopters tour includes a mid-flight touchdown deep in the Kohala mountains, where the versatile pilot becomes an on-the-ground guide, leading a half-mile hike through a strawberry guava forest to a dramatic coastline view.
Helicopter Tour
Pay off a bit of our debt to Earth on this adventure from Hawaii Forest and Trail. Hike to the top of Mauna Kea volcano, stopping to help naturalists restore an endangered dry forest (by collecting native seeds or a similar activity). At the summit, enjoy a spectacular sunset, picnic dinner, and private star show (telescope and hot chocolate provided).
Mauna Kea Summit and Stars Giveback Experience
Once a sanctuary for breakers of sacred laws (punishment was death), the site is now a refuge for all who seek Hawaiian history and culture. Marvel at the Great Wall and kii (wooden statues of gods) guarding a sacred temple, and explore the royal grounds where alii (chiefs) lived. The park is near Hōnaunau Bay, a beloved snorkeling spot. (Locals call it Two Step.)

Star Attractions
Kailua Bay
This petite bay is photogenic enough by day, with a cute little beach, dark lava rocks, and picturesque palms. Many cruises start from the clear, calm waters, as does the swim portion of the Ironman World Championship triathlon. But prepare to be stunned just after sunset, when fading rays reflect on the ocean expanse.
Kailua Bay
Pololū Valley lookout
Horses graze as you gaze down from atop lush, verdant cliffs to a black sand beach, offshore outcroppings, and the majestic cobalt ocean. It’s one of the most inspiring vistas on the Big Island, and totally worth the roughly 1.5-hour drive to North Kohala. Hike down to the beach for a different perspective.

Portland, Oregon
ITINERARY
where to stay
In Oregon's largest city, a well-placed base camp provides access to its compact, walkable downtown — and the chance to explore its enticing green spaces, funky clubs, and vibrant neighborhoods. To help you plan ahead, we’ve compiled a three-day itinerary that hits the high notes of its vast urban pleasures.
Club Wyndham Portland Waterfront Park
where to stay
WorldMark Portland Waterfront Park
Let the City of Roses roll out the welcome mat with its glorious sights, sounds, and tastes.
Gain an appreciation of Portland’s Japanese American heritage at Portland Japanese Garden, one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Asia. Five garden styles harmoniously blend among meandering walkways and tranquil streams. Guided tours are included with the price of admission.
Pittock Mansion, a grand French Renaissance-style château nestled high in the West Hills, once housed one of Portland’s most influential families. Tour the mansion to learn how the city transformed from a humble pioneer town to an industrial leader, and extend your visit to its impeccably maintained grounds. On a clear day, the property’s views of Portland, the Willamette River, and five of the Cascade Mountains are exceptional.
Afternoon
When it comes to Portland’s nightlife, visitors are spoiled for choice — especially if they’re in the mood for a melody. Catch live performances by local and touring musicians at The 1905, a much-loved jazz club known for its artisanal pizza and craft cocktails.
Evening
Portland Japanese Garden
powell's city of books
By now, you’ve worked up an appetite. Modernized, neo-Parisian dishes like gougères (hollow, cheesy popovers) and steak frites grab the spotlight at St. Jack, and its convivial atmosphere makes lingering over a bottle of French wine all the more memorable. For dinner (or a nightcap) with a skyline view, venture to Portland City Grill on the top floor of the U.S. Bancorp Tower for new American cuisine with a heavy steak-and-seafood bend.
Evening
Get lost among the stacks at Powell’s City of Books, the world’s largest independent bookstore. (It occupies an entire city block!)
Street food rivals restaurants in Portland, and the city’s food-cart scene is remarkably diverse. Taste your way around the world at the pod in Pioneer Courthouse Square — just grab a seat on the bricks and enjoy.
At The Crick PDX, a hip-hop themed winery, tasting is a curated playlist — and each wine is a track. ($20 per person, 90 minutes, reservations required).
Afternoon
Dive into Portland’s distinct downtown neighborhoods — and its robust culinary scene.
Rise early and head to the Burnside Bridge for Portland Saturday Market, the city’s famous arts and crafts market, to score treasures like ceramics, soaps, and jewelry. Spend some time people-watching and gazing at the cast-iron buildings of Old Town Chinatown.
Reenergize over Mexican lattes and baked goods at La Perlita in the hip, revitalized Pearl District. Once an industrial area, the Pearl District has evolved into a neighborhood of galleries, shops, cafes, and condos — and an optimal spot to boutique-hop for one-of-a-kind souvenirs. (Bonus: Portland has no sales tax!)
morning
multnomah falls
Visit Forest Park to immerse yourself in one of the country’s largest urban forests without leaving Portland’s city limits. A vast network of trails takes you through bigleaf maples and red alders and lush canyons alongside peaceful streams.
If you don’t have an early plane to catch, make the half-hour drive to Multnomah Falls, the state’s tallest waterfall. No car? The falls are also serviced by three shuttles, Sasquatch Shuttle, Gray Line Trolley, and the Columbia Gorge Express.
afternoon
Fuel up for a final day of exploration at Proud Mary, an Aussie-style cafe in the Alberta Arts District slinging green shakshuka, breakfast sandos, and hearty toasts. (Also find charming boutiques and murals in this youthful neighborhood.) The flavors of Asia are well represented in Portland, and if you haven’t tried them yet, make them a priority for your last meal here. For steak-and-eggs bibimbap, Korean-fried chicken, and breakfast bao (bacon, egg, and cheese in a fluffy, steamed bun), head to Toki, one of the city’s most acclaimed brunch spots.
morning
Get your fill of the Pacific Northwest’s famously photogenic green spaces.

Travel broadens the mind, but it doesn’t have to broaden your carbon footprint. Some of the country’s most appealing destinations are also among its most environmentally conscious, including these resort spots.
Travel in 2023 will have a British accent, a smaller carbon footprint, and a healthy glow.
WELLNESS TRAVEL Whether it’s time at a spa or a remote meditation experience, wellness travel lets you recharge and reset your physical and mental health away from the routine of daily life. Destinations that combine peaceful settings with unique amenities and expert staff help transform your body and soul. Trending wellness spots include Castle Hot Springs in Arizona’s Bradshaw Mountains; Golden Door, a Japanese-style retreat in Southern California; Carillon Miami Wellness Resort on the beach in Florida; YO1 Longevity and Health Resort in the Catskills of New York; and Crestone Mountain Zen Center, a Zen Buddhist monastery at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado.
There’s a reason it’s called the Green Mountain State: Vermont is about 80 percent forested, full of tree-covered peaks and clear waterways that draw nature-lovers and outdoor rec types year-round. Smugglers’ Notch, about an hour from Burlington and Lake Champlain, attracts skiers and snowboarders with its powdery winter slopes, then welcomes hikers, mountain bikers, padders, and anglers in warmer weather. Vermont is green in another way, too, earning top spots on lists of the most eco-friendly states. Burlington was one of the first U.S. cities to provide 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. The state also rates high in locally grown food. Taste the farm-to-fork goodness at Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace, a car-free stretch of restaurants, shops, and pubs.
First-Timer Tip: Seven miles from Burlington, explore the Shelburne Museum, with its amazing array of art, artifacts, and Americana spread across 45 acres of historic buildings and beautiful gardens. A highlight is the Ticonderoga, a restored 220-foot-long steamboat you can tour.
Smugglers’ Notch, Vermont
It’s only fitting that the Emerald City is one of the world’s greenest. Hydroelectric power, recycling, and composting are all big in Seattle, which is surrounded by water (Puget Sound and Lake Washington), forests, and mountains — Rainier looms in the distance. That makes outdoor rec popular, especially kayaking, hiking, camping, and whale watching. Seattle is a coffee connoisseur’s dream, plus it’s full of cultural treasures: the iconic Space Needle, famed Pike Place Market, the historic Paramount Theatre, and The Museum of Flight. (Boeing has a long history here.)
First-Timer Tip: Check out a rainbow of glass-blown pieces by renowned Pacific Northwest artist Dale Chihuly at Chihuly Garden and Glass. The permanent exhibit in the Seattle Center includes eight galleries, a botanical garden, and the 40-foot-tall Glasshouse.
Seattle, Washington
Austin ranks high as an eco-friendly city, especially for its use of solar power. But there’s a lot of star power in the Texas capital, too. Historic 6th Street and the dynamic downtown are home to world-famous art, music, and technology events, like TV’s long-running Austin City Limits music series (from LEED-certified Moody Theater) and the annual SXSW conference and festival. Green spaces abound, including sprawling Zilker Metropolitan Park, at the juncture of Barton Creek and the Colorado River. Hit the trail for easy hikes on the Barton Creek Greenbelt or rent a bike and discover how pedal-friendly the city is. Do both on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake.
First-Timer Tip: Maybe not everything’s bigger in Texas, but the state Capitol building is. The three-story sunset red granite structure is the nation’s largest, even 14 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol. Take a free 30-minute guided tour or roam on your own.
Austin, Texas
The entire state of California has long been a leader in sustainability initiatives, but it’s especially easy being green in San Diego, a city so tied to nature. The top attraction, Balboa Park, rolls out a vast green carpet for visitors — its grounds include the famous San Diego Zoo, The San Diego Museum of Art, the Old Globe theater, and the San Diego Air and Space Museum. Consistently perfect weather makes it easy to get out and enjoy the city’s miles of coastline and beaches, as well as its vibrant shopping, dining, and nightlife areas, such as Gaslamp Quarter, Bankers Hill, and Little Italy.
First-Timer Tip: Visit La Jolla Cove, a picturesque bay with a small beach, usually tame waters, and sea caves that attract swimmers, snorkelers, and paddlers. It’s also an ecologically protected area where you can spot garibaldi fish, sea lions, and other wildlife.

The U.S. and Britain survived a famously messy breakup to become fast friends. Today, American travelers have a huge crush on the U.K. and they are eager to consummate the relationship with a visit.
Most travelers fly into London, home to more than a thousand years of art and architecture on display in museums, galleries, and public squares. It’s a truly global city, with dozens of languages and dialects to be heard on the metro rail system, the Underground, and as many cuisines to be enjoyed in restaurants at street level. Curries, dumplings, and kebabs are as common as the British Sunday roast.

Across the water, Northern Ireland beckons. Revitalized Belfast is a trendy movie and TV location — Game of Thrones was filmed in the area. You can see the real Iron Throne in all its glory as it sits at the center of the destroyed Throne Room. And sit upon a replica Iron Throne. In Wales, the land of poet and writer Dylan Thomas, be impressed by Norman castles and gorgeous beaches.
Back in England, more cultural icons await. The spa town of Bath appeals to Jane Austen fans, plus it boasts Roman ruins and fine museums, restaurants, shops, and theaters. Oxford and Cambridge, two of the world’s oldest universities in cities by the same names, have shaped learning around the globe.

Board the train at King’s Cross station in London, and it’s about a two-hour ride north to historic York and its beautiful medieval churches, frequent ghost sightings, and plethora of pubs. Keep riding north and you’ll eventually reach Edinburgh, Scotland, a city built across seven hills. It’s a breathtaking blend of natural beauty and architectural grandeur. You’ll find all the ancient castles, churches, and cobblestone lanes you’ve pictured, plus chic little cafes and boutiques. Edinburgh becomes the arts capital of Europe in August, hosting the Edinburgh International Festival and its cheeky companion, the Fringe. Farther north in Scotland, explore the Hebrides, a group of islands off the northwestern coast, including Skye. Crossing the bridge to this 50-mile-long island, take note of its dramatic landscape: saw-toothed mountains, sparkling lochs, moody moorlands, and white-sand beaches.
Heading back south along the U.K.’s western coast, explore the mountainous Lake District, a vacation spot famous for its lakes and literary laureates (namely William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter). Rival cities Manchester and Liverpool anchor northwest England, attracting pilgrimages from fans of football and the Beatles.

ECO-TOURISM More travelers are booking experiences that reduce harm to the environment and foster closer interactions with the places — and people — they’re visiting. The steps can be as small as choosing LEED-certified hotels or as big as limiting air travel. But it’s also about embracing the locals and sharing adventures with them: Exploring Kenya alongside a Maasai community. Walking through Borneo’s diverse but threatened rain forest. Touring Norway’s Arctic regions with a pair of huskies. Riding a horse across Mongolia’s steppe. Or planting trees while hiking Hawaii’s Kona Coast.
ACROSS THE POND Nearly 250 years after the U.S. broke up with Britain, Americans love the U.K. more than ever. We’re obsessed with the royal family, we binge episodes of The Crown, Ted Lasso, Bridgerton, and The Great British Bake Off, and we watch NFL and MLB games played in London. But travelers don’t want a purely long-distance relationship. They want to see the U.K.’s innovative chefs, groundbreaking galleries, majestic landscapes, and cozy pubs in person. They want to feel the blend of familiarity and mystery. England, a seat of world history and culture, is the prime destination, but Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales hold allure, as well.

FIRST-TIMER TIP Seven miles from Burlington, explore the Shelburne Museum, with its amazing array of art, artifacts, and Americana spread across 45 acres of historic buildings and beautiful gardens. A highlight is the Ticonderoga, a restored 220-foot-long steamboat you can tour.

FIRST-TIMER TIP Check out a rainbow of glass-blown pieces by renowned Pacific Northwest artist Dale Chihuly at Chihuly Garden and Glass. The permanent exhibit in the Seattle Center includes eight galleries, a botanical garden, and the 40-foot-tall Glasshouse.

FIRST-TIMER TIP Maybe not everything’s bigger in Texas, but the state Capitol building is. The three-story sunset red granite structure is the nation’s largest, even 14 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol. Take a free 30-minute guided tour or roam on your own.

FIRST-TIMER TIP Visit La Jolla Cove, a picturesque bay with a small beach, usually tame waters, and sea caves that attract swimmers, snorkelers, and paddlers. It’s also an ecologically protected area where you can spot garibaldi fish, sea lions, and other wildlife.
