Culinary Globe-Trotting Across Napa + Sonoma
ITINERARY
With a heavy concentration of Michelin-rated restaurants, plus farm-to-table and international dishes made with utmost care, the Napa and Sonoma valleys have all the ingredients for a flavor-packed escape — and we haven’t even mentioned the wine! You’ll only scratch the surface of Northern California’s culinary landscape on this three-day extravaganza, but it’ll be *chef’s kiss* good.
You’ve just arrived in Sonoma, but La Salette, a lively restaurant right off the square, will whisk you off to sunny Portugal. Tuck into steaming helpings of cod cakes and Portuguese fisherman’s stew, and sit on the outdoor patio for the full ambient effect. After lunch, head about an hour north to take in one of Sonoma Valley’s most glam cities, Healdsburg. You could devote your afternoon to its downtown tasting rooms and boutiques, but then you’d miss a chance to observe the area’s rippling topography. During a guided tasting amid the verdant gardens and redwoods at Flowers Vineyards & Winery, you’ll learn how the Sonoma Coast lends a distinct minerality to the vineyard’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Afternoon
Michelin-reviewed Barndiva inspires European-style romance in a rustic-minimalist setting. The barnlike events space, restaurant, and adjacent gardens spread out over a half-acre in the middle of Healdsburg. Plates large and small revolve around Sonoma’s seasonality and local purveyors, and garden-inspired cocktails nod to the property’s lush vegetation. One must-order app? Croquettes with goat cheese, tomato jam, and lavender.
Evening
Chef Philip Tessier’s refined modern-American fare, top-notch cocktails, and a 10,000-bottle collection of Napa Valley wines — the largest in the world —draw patrons to PRESS restaurant, an expansive venue enveloped by neighboring vineyards along CA-29 in St. Helena. Its seasonal menu reflects Napa Valley’s bounty at any given time. In spring, prepare your palate for ingredients like peas, trumpet mushrooms, and mustard blossoms.
Evening
By now you’ve worked up an appetite, so head about 9 miles south to The Charter Oak in St. Helena. Shared plates and a seasonal menu showcasing ingredients from its 3.5-acre culinary farm are a focus at this family-style spot from Christopher and Martina Kostow. After lunch, first-rate shopping awaits in historic downtown St. Helena. Browse giftables and paper goods at Pennyweight, clothing at elysewalker, garden tools and accessories at ACRES home+garden, and more.
Afternoon
MUSTARD SEASON
Between January and March, the Napa Valley is blanketed in sunny yellow mustard flowers — a picture-perfect backdrop for your journey.
morning
Pick up provisions like wildflower honey, Meyer lemon oil, bacon-onion jam, and cheese at Oakville Grocery, a hip roadside general store in Oakville that dates back to 1881. You’re headed to a hands-on food or beverage class CIA at Coppia, next to Oxbow Public Market. (Book in advance — spots fill up fast!) Once class is dismissed, explore more of the market for wine-country souvenirs, or venture beyond its walls to pop into shops and tasting rooms along First Street. When your stomach is rumbling again, decadent, Southern Italian-inspired pastas like Ravioli al Limone (spinach, ricotta, and Pecorino-stuffed pasta in a lemon cream sauce) await at Scala Osteria & Bar, a stylish sister restaurant to Bistro Don Giovanni.
afternoon
Chef Thomas Keller has several outposts in Yountville — including The French Laundry and Ad Hoc + Addendum — and a breakfast of colorful macarons and espresso at his boulangerie-inspired Bouchon Bakery is a fine way to start your morning. You’ll also be tempted by luscious pain au chocolat, decadent cookies, and flaky croissants, but be careful not to spoil your appetite: The Bacon + Wine Experience tasting at Priest Ranch Winery, just a 5-minute walk down Washington Street, is next on the agenda. This unique pairing includes a sampling of four cuts of pork belly and curated wines.

Anyone looking to fit more trips into their travel calendar should consider shoulder season — that magical time between a destination’s peak months and offseasons when you can still enjoy your vacation to the fullest, minus high costs and packed attractions. It might just become your new favorite time to travel.
Imagine visiting centuries-old monuments, seeing natural wonders, and securing sought-after dinner reservations without endless lines and shoulder-bumping crowds. It sounds like vacation nirvana, but it’s the major benefit of avoiding peak travel times. Plus, you won’t contribute to overtourism — when too many visitors start to negatively affect locals’ quality of life.
Smaller Crowds
While best known for its powdery ski slopes, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, also shines once the snow melts away. The warmer months are the ideal time to breathe in pine-fresh air, paddle serene waters, and, yes, zoom down a big hill — this time without the helmet and clunky footwear.
Steamy relaxation awaits, both downtown and in the forested foothills. Off Lincoln Avenue, the pools at Old Town Hot Springs are fueled by the Heart Spring, the natural hot spring that’s pumped out 103-degree water for more than 100 years. North of town, admire any remaining drifts of snow from the warm comfort of Strawberry Park Hot Springs, nestled beneath the alpine trees. For ultimate tranquility, book a massage to accompany your soak.

This sobering and powerful museum serves as an indelible reminder of Nazi Germany’s atrocities, how it killed 6 million Jews — and millions of non-Jewish people — before and during World War II. Its centerpiece, Permanent Exhibition: The Holocaust, is a free but ticketed multimedia presentation of the generation-defining tragedy. Other exhibits are ticketless, including the popular Remember the Children: Daniel’s Story, a learning experience appropriate for ages 8 and older.

Before it evolved into an outdoor recreation destination, Steamboat Springs was entrenched in the Old West, a hub within the cattle ranching universe. Ranchers still patrol the valley, which you can explore via their preferred mode of transportation: horseback. Steamboat Lake Outpost offers one- or two-hour gentle rides that pass beneath Sand Mountain and Hahns Peak.

A chairlift transports you to the top of Steamboat’s legendary Howelsen Hill, the starting point for the Howler Alpine Slide. The foaming white water at Fish Creek Falls plunges more than 280 feet down to the canyon floor, making it one of the most picturesque destinations in the area. More than 80 pieces of outdoor art are sprinkled throughout Steamboat Springs, including the building-side paintings you can spot on the self-guided Steamboat Mural Tour — just be sure to keep an eye out for other installations and sculptures. Don’t skip the Rio Grande Railroad Car, a former caboose-turned-artist’s canvas. (The railroad car now houses a studio for local artists.)
Magnificent Murals and Public Art

Time to get the most out of every dollar. Absent the high-season demand, airfares, lodging, and tour tickets will likely cost less when you travel during shoulder season. For example, analysis from Yahoo Finance revealed roughly $200 in savings by scheduling a Charlotte, North Carolina, to Orlando, Florida, flight for early December 2024 rather than the very end of the year — when the theme parks get extra busy.
Lower Rates
Hello darkness, my new friend. “Noctourism” — trips based on night-sky experiences — is a burgeoning 2025 travel trend. Late fall is on the cusp of winter’s prime stargazing season, and visitors to the higher latitudes (such as Washington state or Canada) could get a glimpse of the northern lights. Need destination ideas? Check out DarkSky’s database of light-pollution-free locales.
Noctourism
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is over, but “gig-tripping” — racking up hundreds (even thousands) of miles to see your favorite artists perform — will likely continue into 2025. So plan an entire shoulder-season getaway around that once-in-a-lifetime sporting event or concert, like the Oasis reunion tour’s September stop in Southern California or Formula One’s 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix in late November.
Gig-Tripping
It’s still nice! (It is in some parts of the world, anyway.) Enjoy sunny days on the beach during a September trip to the South Carolina coast. And you can ditch the winter jacket in Virginia when you peruse the springtime wildflowers at Shenandoah National Park or wander through historical buildings within Colonial Williamsburg.
The Weather
One picture can tell a tale without a single word. The second you see it, you’re instantly transported back into the moment — like a real-life time machine.
You recall how small you felt looking out at the Grand Canyon. You remember what happened to make you and your cousin laugh so hard over dinner. And you’ll never forget what it was like to go snorkeling with your kids for the first time.

The 15 MLB teams that train in Florida form the Grapefruit League. Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees host games at George M. For more than a century, baseball teams have trained in early spring at various Florida sites, including Tampa, the preseason home for the New York Yankees since 1996. Though near daily exhibition games are the big draw for fans, there’s plenty more to do in the area. Lead off with the Tampa Riverwalk, a 2.6-mile paved path that connects several big attractions, including The Florida Aquarium and the Glazer Children’s Museum. The Riverwalk is anchored at one end by Armature Works, a 1910 industrial building that’s now filled with dining spots, retail shops, and event spaces. Venerable theme park Busch Gardens, opened in 1959, still delivers thrills across 300-plus acres of animal experiences, rides, shows, and games.
Fewer than 25 miles away, on a skinny island off Florida’s west coast, Clearwater Beach beckons with 2.5 miles of white sand, turquoise water, and seemingly eternal sunshine. Not far from shore, you’ll discover theaters, parks, shopping, and beachfront dining options. Clearwater Marine Aquarium earns raves with its collection of rescued sea creatures — birds, dolphins, otters, sharks, stingrays, and turtles. St. Petersburg, also fewer than 25 miles from Tampa, caters to fans of art, fine dining, and craft beverages. At the Salvador Dalí Museum, see 96 of the Spanish surrealist’s oil paintings, as well as original drawings, illustrations, photos, prints, and sculptures. The Morean Arts Center features the work of famed glass artist Dale Chihuly, while the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg holds pieces spanning nearly 5,000 years — marvel at masterpieces by Claude Monet and Georgia O’Keeffe. St. Pete is a must-visit destination for foodies, thanks in part to fresh seafood at spots like Juno & The Peacock. On the bar scene, Green Bench Brewing Co.’s Webb’s City Cellar was a 2024 James Beard semifinalist. And the Gulp Coast Craft Beer Trail beckons lovers of haute hops.

The Cactus League comprises 15 MLB teams that train in the Phoenix area. The 10 stadiums are fairly close to each other (some clubs share a ballpark). Superstar Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers, the defending World Series champions, play at Camelback Ranch-Glendale in Phoenix, while the Chicago Cubs draw legions of loyal fans to Sloan Park in Mesa.

The Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians) and the New York Giants (now in San Francisco) pioneered spring training in Arizona during the 1940s, eventually drawing other MLB teams to Phoenix and Tucson. Today, the whole ballgame is in metro Phoenix — along with many off-the-diamond gems. The Phoenix Mountains Preserve shows off the area’s desert-based beauty through a series of peaks and parks just 20 minutes from downtown. Hike, bike, and enjoy views from iconic Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak. The Summit Trail is a strenuous climb, while the Maxine Lakin Nature Trail is an easy route. For more natural wonders, check out the Desert Botanical Garden, where spring means the cacti are in bloom. Colorful flowers cover prickly pears, saguaros, and pincushions. Beauty by human hands awaits at the Phoenix Art Museum. Its modern-minded collection includes paintings by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Architecture buffs might guess that the museum was designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Tour Taliesin West, Wright’s winter home and school, in nearby Scottsdale. Another one-time winter getaway worth touring is Wrigley Mansion, built by chewing gum magnate (and long-time Chicago Cubs owner) William Wrigley Jr. Perched on a private knoll in Phoenix’s swanky Biltmore neighborhood, it now houses three fine-dining spots: Geordie’s, Jamie’s Wine Bar, and Christopher’s, a glass showcase for James Beard Award-winning chef Christopher Gross. One of the hottest restaurants in town is Bacanora, thanks to chef Rene Andrade winning the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest. His place celebrates wood-fired, Sonoran-style Mexican cuisine. You’ll find more eateries and cocktail lounges along downtown’s Roosevelt Row arts district, plus boutiques and street art. When you’re not watching baseball players swing their bats, swing your clubs — golf is big here, and the Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club in Scottsdale is one of Arizona’s top public layouts.

Michelin-reviewed Barndiva inspires European-style romance in a rustic-minimalist setting. The barnlike events space, restaurant, and adjacent gardens spread out over a half-acre in the middle of Healdsburg.
