Immerse Yourself in Napa Valley and Beyond
ITINERARY
World-class wine still tops the list of reasons to visit Napa Valley, but several worthy runners-up are gaining ground. Art, shopping, dining, wellness, and wilderness all vie to be part of a winter weekend getaway. Our three-day itinerary uncorks the possibilities.
North of Calistoga, explore the wilderness of Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, named for the man who wrote Treasure Island and honeymooned on the site in 1880. For something wild in a different way, visit di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, an outdoor sculpture garden that displays hundreds of eclectic and somewhat bizarre works over more than 200 acres.
Afternoon
Tonight, have a romantic dinner in the car — the posh car of a Napa Valley Wine Train as it carries you on a two-hour starlit journey. The Gourmet Express Dinner takes place amid the vintage glamour of a refurbished Pullman dining car. Enhance your excursion with an onboard wine tasting.
Evening
In Calistoga, take your pick of fine dining experiences, including Auro, which recently received a coveted Michelin star. Acclaimed chef Rogelio Garcia and his team prepare a seasonally inspired, five-course tasting menu in an intimate space with views of the Palisades mountains. Then catch a movie or live concert at The Moonshine theater, an open-air venue in downtown Calistoga.
Evening
Live out the oenophile’s dream by playing Winemaker for a Day at Raymond Vineyards in St. Helena. In this 90-minute experience, you’ll learn the art of winemaking while blending your own Napa Valley Bordeaux-style red. Bottle it, cork it, add a custom label, and take it home with you that day.
Afternoon
Wake up your skin at the famous mud baths in Calistoga. The town is home to several spas (such as luxurious Solage) that provide treatments using a therapeutic mud made from local volcanic ash and mineral springs water. Most involve soaking in a tub of mud and maybe having some applied to your face.
morning
Not far from the Town Green, hop on a comfy bike at Ace It! Bike Tours and join their Windsor Bike ‘n Brew Tour. It’s a journey along Sonoma country roads and serene trails, with stops at several area craft breweries and taprooms, including renowned Russian River Brewing Company. The tour covers 4 to 5 miles each way and takes four to five hours.
afternoon
For the last day of your getaway, make the short drive from Napa County to Sonoma County. You’ll find many charming small towns in Sonoma, including Windsor. Check out its Town Green (aka The Green), a park and gathering space with a traditional town-square feel. Have breakfast there at KC’s American Kitchen, a bright and fun spot with a heated patio.

Human studies have proven that giving elevates personal meaning in life. In the world of travel, that calls for sprinkling extra generosity and open-mindedness into your itinerary. Thankfully, these four cities are rife with opportunities to elevate historical knowledge, social awareness, and the very community you’re visiting.
Shaped by centuries of immigration, the United States blends culinary styles from dozens of traditions. A visit to one of these three European food utopias will soon have you exclaiming “opa,” “ooh la la,” or (as the people of Leavenworth, Washington, say), “holy schnitzel.”
Clearwater is renowned for having one of America’s best beaches, but no trip to this tropical paradise is complete without grazing on some Greek goodies. Just a 30-minute drive north, Tarpon Springs boasts one of the largest Greek communities in the United States. Founded along the bayous of the Gulf Coast, the city attracted hundreds of Greek immigrants in the early 20th century to work in the growing sponge industry. Dive into the sponge story at the Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum, and book a tour on Spongeorama Cruise Lines to spot dolphins, manatees, rare birds, and the historic Anclote Key Lighthouse. (Be sure to pick up a squishy souvenir of your own at the Spongeorama Sponge Factory.)
Back on land, visit St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral to admire the stained glass, frescoes, and marble icons. Stroll through downtown to the sounds of bouzouki (a Greek-origin stringed instrument), visit art galleries and antiques stores, and watch workers unload at the sponge docks. With Greek restaurants clustered downtown, the hardest part of your trip will be choosing where to sample flaming saganaki (fried) cheese, moussaka, and seafood. If you’re looking for traditional Greek flavors without leaving Clearwater, check out the family-owned Sofia’s Greek Grill or Famous Greek Salads, where a host of gyros, pitas, and dolmades beckon before a dessert of baklava cheesecake.

In the classic 1967 film, The Graduate, the future is one word: plastics. Today, it’s two words: fewer plastics. Since 2021, the world’s largest cruise line has achieved a 50 percent reduction in single-use plastic items like straws, cups, lids, bags, food packaging, and decorations for meals and staterooms. That’s more than 500 million pieces.

Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink — it’s the ancient mariner’s lament. But technologies like reverse osmosis and steam evaporators can turn seawater into fresh water. That’s how Norwegian self-produced 90 percent of the water used on board its vessels in 2022, cutting the need to acquire precious potable water in ports.

Here’s a plug for shore power, which lets cruise ships turn off their diesel engines and literally plug into a local electrical supply while in port, thereby reducing emissions. Princess pioneered the field in 2001, when Juneau, Alaska, became the first city with such a connection. The technology has since spread to other cities and cruise lines.

A nexus of cultural fusion, NOLA has a French heart beating at its core and a celebratory joie de vivre spirit. Founded in 1718, the city’s French Quarter (or Vieux Carré) is a maze of cast-iron balconies, hidden courtyards and gardens, and architecture unchanged for centuries. Start your day with street performers, fortune tellers, and artists in Jackson Square, then head over to the French Market. To get a glimpse of the true character of this place, explore the area’s history and mysteries with New Orleans Legendary Walking Tours.
The French Quarter is also the birthplace of Creole cuisine, created by the French residents of New Orleans and influenced by Spanish, West African, Caribbean, and Native American ingredients and traditions. Dishes use rich sauces, fresh herbs and spices, tomatoes, and seafood caught in local waters. Prepare yourself for a feast in the elaborate dining rooms of 183-year-old Antoine's Restaurant, run by the fifth-generation grandson of the founder. Don’t skip the oysters Rockefeller, said to be invented here. At Galatoire’s Restaurant on Bourbon Street, revel in the black-and-white tiled dining room over a Sazerac, soufflé potatoes, and shrimp rémoulade.

Nestled in the Cascade Mountains in central Washington, this charming Bavarian-inspired village draws in more than 2 million visitors a year to explore the boutiques and shops, sip on local wine and cider, and nosh on brats and pretzels. Leavenworth began its life as a logging and railroad town with an Old West attitude, but hit hard times in the 20th century. In the 1960s, inspired by the surrounding alpine hills, town leaders decided to renovate the downtown to embody the spirit of the Bavarian Alps. During year-round events and activities — including the twinkling Winter Karneval and an Oktoberfest celebration that’s one of the largest outside Germany — visitors enjoy indoor and outdoor biergartens, live bands, and traditional treats.
For live music and homemade Bavarian food, check out Andreas Keller Restaurant, a family-owned eatery with a German head chef. With sausages, sauerkraut, and a variety of schnitzels to accompany your lager or wheat beer, you won’t go back to your resort hungry. After feeding yourself, hand feed the herd at Leavenworth Reindeer Farm. Explore the great outdoors through hiking, biking, and river rafting in the area, or find your inner peace at Alpine Hot Yoga, which offers daily classes designed for all skill levels.

I want future generations to experience the same magic that I did as a kid. To me, it all begins with how we take care of our soil. Our two main objectives have been soil health and creating more access for everyone to healthy food.
