RED VELVET CHEESECAKE
Take a delicious traditional red velvet cake and give it a creamy twist. Don't let the red color fool you: The flavor is chocolate.
PEPPERMINT STICK BROWNIES
A creamy, peppermint-flavor cheesecake layer adds holiday flair to classic chocolate brownies.
Café Latte’s Turtle Cake
For this spectacular dessert, the coffee-flavored cakes are divided by layers of dark chocolate frosting, giant pecans and caramel ice cream topping.
GOLDEN TOFFEE NUGGETS
Dipping toffee pieces halfway in chocolate is way tidier and easier than fully coating them—and the result is more striking, visually. For undeniable holiday wow, brush on some edible gold luster dust.
CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES
Using an easy method from Pete's Chocolate Co. in Detroit, you can make a dazzling array of rich, creamy chocolate truffles. (Note: The yield varies depending if you use bittersweet, milk or white chocolate, so read the recipe carefully before starting. And know that you can double it if desired.)
WHITE CHRISTMAS PEPPERMINT LAYER CAKE
Fanciful pink peppermint frosting and snowy cake layers will brighten any holiday party. To decorate, choose between simple candy adornments or whimsical white-chocolate trees.
CARAMEL ALMOND STARS
These playful candies are sort of a mock turtle—all the texture and flavor minus the homemade caramel or fussy dipping. Sprinkle with Wilton's gold star sprinkles (sold online) or coarse sparkling sugar. For a flavor twist, substitute roasted, salted almonds or even smoked almonds.
ROASTED PEARS WITH LEMON CREAM AND CANDIED PINE NUTS
This grand finale of a dessert features maple-burnished pears, drifts of lemony whipped cream and a sprinkling of candied pine nuts. It's all about contrasts—warm and cool, creamy and crunchy, sweet and tart. And best of all, all three components can be made ahead of time.
MOLTEN CHOCOLATE LAVA CAKES
Top these gooey-center, intense chocolate desserts with powdered sugar.
CHOCOLATE CREAM PIE
The filling of this chocolate-crust pie is luscious, but not too rich. (Think old-fashioned chocolate pudding.) A bit of sour cream in the whipped topping balances the chocolate perfectly.

PAPER FLOWERS

GIFT WRAP
Wrap gifts in paper you decorate with metallic paint pens or gold leaf. Handmade paper tassels add a playful touch to a traditional gift box.
Use template to cut flower shapes from kraft paper. Fold each in half along dotted lines as shown on template. Unfold and fold in half along other axis; unfold. Glue a bead in center.
HOW-TO
DIY PAPER FLOWERS
Cut ½-inch-wide strips of plain kraft paper into twelve 10-inch lengths. Lay strips in a starburst pattern, gluing each strip to the one on top of it. Let dry. Loosely bend bundle of strips in half to form a tassel. Glue a strip of gold-leafed kraft paper around bundle 1 inch from top. For hanger, slip ribbon through the opening below where the strips are folded over.
STRAIGHTEDGE UTILITY KNIFE KRAFT PAPER, PLAIN AND GOLD-LEAFED GLUE STICKRIBBON
DIY PAPER TASSEL
Unroll a section of kraft paper on a flat surface. Brush on random, imperfect swaths of crafts glue with foam brush. Do not coat entire surface with glue. Allow glue to set until tacky, then apply gold leaf sheets by gently rubbing in place with your finger. Remove gold leaf from unglued areas by gently dusting with dry foam brush.

GOLD-LEAFED PAPER
Use template to cut eight holly leaves from kraft paper and fold each in half lengthwise with bone folder. Glue one side of a folded leaf to one side of another. Repeat, stopping short of gluing first and last leaves together. Sandwich a loop of ribbon inside leaves and leave a 1-inch tail; glue first and last leaves. Tie a bead to each end of ribbon.

Pedestal or vanity: Pedestal over vanity every day—combined with a shelf above! Quick upgrade: Paint color. Favorite impact color: Ralph Lauren, Terracotta CF02C. Favorite Midwest style influencer: Jerry Twetten. Special spruce-up: Fresh flowers. Every powder room needs: Fun wallpaper.
Easiest quick upgrade: Light fixtures for sure. Goodbye ’90s vanity lighting! Good to Know: One thing that surprises our clients is that wallpaper is typically a more practical choice for high-traffic areas like bathrooms. It’s durable, wipeable and can last three times as long as paint. Beautiful and functional—what more do you want? Every powder room needs: A conversation piece! Whether it’s a collected mirror, whimsical wallpaper, monogrammed hand towel or vintage piece of artwork, bring in something noteworthy. Pedestal or vanity: Ooh, it really depends on if you want storage or if you have the space to add a vanity. They both are beautiful options. Favorite splurge: Either wallpaper or a statement faucet. Best under $50 upgrade: A vintage piece of artwork from your favorite local antique store. Favorite Midwest style influencer to follow: Kate Marker. She’s one of my favorite Midwestern gals! Favorite impact paint color: Benjamin Moore’s Townsend Harbor Brown HC64. Special-occasion spruce-up: Light your favorite candle, add a bud vase with flowers and remember to replace the hand towel with a fresh one. Parting thought: Powder rooms are one of the rooms in a home that both you and your guests utilize. Allow it to be a space where you can show off your personality! We always encourage our clients to do something bold or something that feels a little risky to them. Since a powder room is typically a smaller space, the attention to detail, such as installing millwork or wallpaper, won’t break the bank either.
Bria Hammel Bria Hammel Interiors Mendota Heights, Minnesota
Good to know: I’ve found that hanging a sconce directly above a mirror doesn’t produce the best light. It’s much more flattering to hang them at eye level if you have the space. Design rule worth breaking: Honestly, if I like it and my client likes it, then it’s a rule worth breaking. Favorite Midwest style influencer to follow: Lori Paranjape—@mrsparanjape. Favorite impact paint color: Farrow and Ball De Nimes No. 299. Vanity or pedestal: It depends on the style of the house and size of the powder room. Every powder room needs: Great mood lighting. Parting thought: I think powder rooms should be exceptionally creative and less formal. The powder rooms that speak to me are quirky and creative. I’m less impressed with a formal, dressy powder room.
Heidi Woodman Haus Love Interiors Indianapolis
Handpainted Wallpaper Bridgett Cochran, Porter Teleo Kansas City, Missouri
Every powder room needs: An amazing mirror. It’s almost like a piece of jewelry—sometimes simple like a pearl stud, and other times like a big showy chandelier earring. Special-occasion spruce-up: Definitely flowers. And a Trapp candle—No. 13 Bob’s Flower Shoppe for me! Design rule worth breaking: The greatest shift I have seen in design in the past 10 years is the abandonment of rules and the overall embracing of authenticity in materials and the way they’re used. Favorite splurge: I do love to see a bold wallcovering in the powder room. In this space, the interior designer created a beautiful balance between the dark and dramatic feel of the wallcovering and the simplicity and natural feel of the other finishes. Favorite impact paint color: I love the deep emerald green color of this wallcovering. Our original colorways are not based on paint colors, but are all mixed by hand using the finest quality pigments and inks. The result is the deepest, richest hue that has a naturally matte finish. The depth and texture cannot be achieved with paint alone.
Design rule worth breaking: Being traditional. A powder room is the perfect little space to make a statement. So go bold even if it’s a traditional home. Favorite splurge: Lights are always worth the money in my eyes. It’s like the diamond earrings for the space. Good to know: I have two go-to tricks for any powder room. I want a bold wallpaper and oversized lights. The oversized lights are like chandelier earrings paired with your best denim jeans. It adds the sparkle to the outfit. Easy upgrade: Wallpaper transforms a space even if you do nothing else. Best under $50 upgrade for a powder room: Get a tray for the counter to organize and accessorize. Favorite Midwest style influencer to follow: Tori Alexander is a friend and a designer that I admire. She does traditional style with a bold look. Favorite impact paint color: Benjamin Moore Essex Green HC-188. Vanity or pedestal: It depends, but I like all the options I can have with a vanity. I can paint, add molding, add hardware, fill a space or make it petite to conserve space. Special-occasion spruce-up: I use a Middle Kingdom bud vase in a fun color and add one flower with greenery from my bushes. And always a candle burning.
Misc: I consider lighting to be the jewelry in a room. It’s what gives a room its vibe, so to speak.
