Come late October and early November, the border between heaven and earth is said to blur, allowing souls of those who have passed to return to our living world to eat, drink, dance, savor, and celebrate with loved ones. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a colorful and joyful event commemorated over a few days every year. Día de los Muertos traditions are such a reflection of indigenous Mexican culture that they’re now recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Like a trail of breadcrumbs, local families welcome their relatives’ spirits back to earth by showering flower petals and placing candles and other sentimental offerings from their cemetery plots to the family’s home. If you’re staying in Playa del Carmen, you need not follow a trail to find the entrance of the Festival of Life and Death Traditions — it’s clearly marked and ready to welcome you October 30 through November 2 at Xcaret park in 2024. Expect plenty of skull and skeleton motifs (two of the holiday’s signature symbols), rainbow-hued decor, plays, dances, concerts, workshops, and an interactive hacienda, where those who are less familiar with Día de los Muertos can take part in hands-on experiences to learn more about the holiday’s traditions. Before and after the festivities, be sure to stroll through the other portions of Xcaret, an eco-archaeological park with waterslides, snorkeling, and more about 50 miles south of Cancún. In addition to the botanic beauty, you’ll be able to witness locals' half-painted faces (a custom that’s said to represent life and death).

Rest your bones at the Hotel Xcaret México and bring your appetite. Thirteen chefs — three of whom have earned Michelin stars — and one sommelier ensure each meal is a transcendent experience.

Peek around for peacocks. In addition to being the national bird of India, this is an important symbol in Hinduism. During Diwali, peacocks are supposed to represent prosperity and luck. You’ll also find good fortune with a hospitable stay at Hotel Boss.
Deepavali, or Diwali, is considered by many Hindus to be the MVP of Indian holidays. Indians light up rows (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) outside of their abodes to showcase the light that protects them from spiritual darkness. From October 31 through November 4, 2024, you can witness this in person throughout cities around the globe. One of the best places to soak up the radiance? Singapore. Here, you can step inside the Indian Heritage Centre to study up on history in this Southeast Asian country. Leading up to the festival of lights, the museum also offers a Deepavali exhibit full of free family activities, including craft workshops, celebrity chef culinary demonstrations, live musical performances, and storytelling. Be sure to carve out 60 minutes during your vacation to hop aboard the Deepavali Big Bus Tour. The double-decker bus will give you a bird’s-eye view of the Little India neighborhood and its intricate street-spanning light displays. As you ride, you’ll roll past the majestic Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, which is one of the oldest temples in Singapore. That name carries a lot of significance: Sri Veeramakaliamman is known as an evil-destroying goddess. Most of the temple’s early members were former residents of India who had migrated to Singapore, and this temple was supposed to bolster them during this transition and help them feel safe, secure, and centered in their new homeland. The moniker grew in impact during World War II, when the temple sheltered locals during Japanese air raids.

Rathausplatz
During winter, nearly every street corner in Vienna is studded with a Maronistand (roasted chestnut stand). Don’t see one immediately? Let your nose be your guide. The cozy vibes continue at Club Hotel Cortina, featuring a small bar bursting with local spirits.
Christmas in Vienna is such a dreamy scene that this was the title of a 2020 Hallmark movie. You’ll certainly give the real-life experience two big thumbs up if you plan a trip to the capital of Austria around December 25. There are more than a dozen Christmas markets in Vienna, and many run past Advent, the anticipatory four-week season that concludes on Christmas Eve and involves the preparation for the arrival of Jesus Christ. Quite possibly the most famous Viennese Christkindlmarkt is Rathausplatz, which is situated in front of the town hall. Expect about 100 stalls and opportunities for ice-skating, then swing through the nearby park that’s overflowing with lights and features a Ferris wheel. Another notable Christkindlmarkt is at Stephansplatz, which is right in the heart of Vienna and situated at the foot of the picturesque Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral). The market includes more than 40 booths, offering snow globes, schnapps, and seasonal goodies in the shadow of a towering, illuminated evergreen tree. For one of the most impressive displays, be sure to include a visit to Christmas Village Belvedere Palace. Due to its somewhat off-the-beaten-path location and intimate size, the market is smaller and less busy than others. However, what it lacks in size it makes up for in history and scenery. As you shop, stroll, and sip, your backdrop is a Baroque palace and its lake, which glimmers from the star-shaped lights that dangle above. Arrive early to tour the palace’s impressive art collection.

Magical can sound redundant this time of year. But at Biltmore, fantastical versions of Christmas come to life — hence, the Hallmark original film A Biltmore Christmas debuting this holiday season. At America’s Largest Home, the halls are elegantly decked on a macro scale along with nearly every other space in the 250-room chateau of Appalachia. Bundle up to linger on the twinkling outdoor grounds, too, where luminarias, a pathway of Norway spruce trees, and live musicians warm the soul. Discover more enchanting Asheville destinations:
Asheville’s Holiday Marvel
Rattling off the imaginative menu offerings can sound like poetry: Purple Tiara Rice Middlins, Sospiro Ranch Rabbit and Country Ham Dip, Coal-Roasted Covington Sweet Potato. Just trust the inspiration of owner-chef John Fleer (aka Papa Fleer), a pioneer of farm-to-table cooking. As a cherry on top, this eatery is located like a crown jewel in downtown’s Pack Square.
They had us at Appalachian soul food and breakfast served daily. Connected to The Foundry Hotel, Benne channels the roots of its surrounding neighborhood, The Block, known as Asheville’s historically Black business district. Savory delights include Local Mushroom Toast and Farmer’s Hash for breakfast and plates such as Jerk Pork Chops and Southern Fried Banana Blossoms for dinner.
The genre of this fast-casual newcomer is as eclectic as each flavor-drizzled menu item. Technically, it’s a street-style Irani cafe of India — in Southern Appalachia. Ethnography aside, it’s likely your next anytime craving. One instant favorite on the finger foods menu is SPDP: savory puffed flour crisps packing sweet yogurt, chutneys, potatoes, cilantro, and other spices. The mastermind behind it, Meherwan Irani, is a five-time James Beard Award semifinalist.
Winter has a way of making any tavern extra cozy. New kid on the block, Tall John’s, cranks that up several degrees. Billed as an elevated tavern — with classic bistro eats and cocktails — the Montford Historic District where you’ll find Tall John’s completes the charm. Drop in with or without an appetite for a rum daiquiri or Tom Collins, dubbed a John Collins in these parts.
It’s easy for novelty to steal the limelight at this James Beard Award finalist for best new restaurant. Chef-owner Silver Iocovozzi launched their intimate 18-seat dining experience in 2022 as “the first Filipinx restaurant of its kind” in the city. The open-kitchen design replaced a former arcade. But, simply put, their inventive dishes are unforgettably delicious, channeling the home cooking of Iocovozzi’s mother, affectionately known as Neneng.
More is more at this mainstay of Spanish cuisine that won a James Beard Award in 2022. Meaning, taste as many plates as possible to grasp the culinary genius of chef Katie Button. Most of the snacks, tapas, and large plates are delightfully shareable. The all-Spanish wine list has claimed national accolades. And dessert is a must, with creations like a silky-smooth Basque cheesecake topped with blueberry-tarragon compote.
Yes, those are all taco flavors scrawled in colorful chalk (and rotating regularly) above the counter. Since its 2011 launch in the River Arts District, the instant-classic lunch institution has spawned nearly a dozen replicas across three states. Just sink your teeth into one of their Bangkok shrimp, lamb gyro, or banh mi-style tofu offerings, and everything will make sense, especially the lunch-hour line.

Put sunscreen on your holiday wish list this year — the vacation playgrounds of Weston, Palm Beach, and Miami beckon. It’s not really the holiday season in New York City until the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is lit in all its towering glory. After the inaugural lighting in late November, the tree glows daily from 5:00 a.m. to midnight. Go early for the least-crowded views and photos. And do brunch from several options at Rockefeller Center, such as Lodi, an Italian spot that’s fancy yet speedy. The all-day menu features small plates, cheese and charcuterie boards, and rich pasta dishes. If you’ve got serious Christmas toy shopping to do — or just want to feel like a kid again — the flagship store of iconic FAO Schwarz is right there. Buy a giant dance-on piano mat and re-create the memorable movie scene from Big.
For a luxe lunch, splurge on fresh seafood at Le Bernardin, holder of three Michelin stars and more James Beard awards than any other local restaurant. Caviar and octopus catch your eye on the three-course prix fixe lunch menu. Get your kicks at the annual Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes, a 90-minute dance extravaganza at Radio City Music Hall. Since it was first staged 90 years ago, the show has played to more than 75 million people. Choose from multiple daily performance times, including morning and afternoon matinees. Stretch your own legs by ice-skating at Winter Village at Bryant Park. Admission is free (skate rental is extra), and a European-style, open-air market beckons with global artisans vending from custom kiosks.
Darkness unleashes the full magic of the Macy’s holiday store windows, a tradition dating to 1874. The elaborate animated displays celebrate a different theme each year. Seeing a Broadway show is always a treat, and the holiday season makes it even more special, as seasonal productions join family favorites like The Lion King. Another classic choice is the New York City Ballet version of The Nutcracker, staged at Lincoln Center. If you’re having dinner before or after the show, Joe Allen is a mainstay, having fed audiences, casts, and crew members for years. Save room for the banana cream pie. Guantanamera serves traditional Cuban cuisine and killer mojitos. After a show, the vibe is Cuban dance party, powered by live music.

NOTHING COMPARES TO being in New York City for the holidays. The Big Apple’s already high levels of light, energy, and traffic (human and vehicle) spike between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, generating a vibe of excitement and anticipation you feel practically everywhere you go — from busy sidewalks in Manhattan to a normally quiet residential neighborhood in Brooklyn. If you’re planning a getaway for the 2024 holiday season, there are many iconic traditions you can partake in, but also some lesser-known ways to celebrate. This two-day itinerary includes the best of both approaches, combining the toasts of Christmases past with newer notions of Noel.
Evening
Lights, camera, Christmas! Experience the magic of the season in New York City on a jingle bell jaunt through some of Gotham’s greatest holiday hits — and underrated local favorites. Start planning a 2024 getaway that stuffs your travel stocking with trees, toys, tunes, feasts, fests, and more.
Arthouse Hotel New York Park Central Hotel Club Wyndham Midtown 45
Book a holiday cruise with Classic Harbor Line and see the lights of Manhattan aboard a yacht decked in Christmas decor. Take in the skyline and Statue of Liberty from a heated solarium while enjoying treats and live music. Most cruises depart from Chelsea Piers and last 1.5 to 2 hours. Or gaze at the famously over-the-top Dyker Heights Christmas Lights in a residential Brooklyn neighborhood. Bus and van tours depart from Midtown Manhattan in late afternoon. Some stop in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a Brooklyn enclave beloved for its cobblestone streets, striking architecture, diverse dining options and photogenic views across the East River. Need a late dinner? Fiat Cafe, in Lower Manhattan’s Nolita (North of Little Italy) section, serves traditional Italian fare in a warm, unpretentious setting that feels a little like Rome.
Head to the Bronx to see another elaborate, creative labor of love: the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show, a favorite for more than 30 years. Inside the Conservatory, more than two dozen G scale model trains and trolleys roll past a series of New York landmarks. A new outdoor display lets trains traverse towering mountainscapes. The NYBG's Hudson Garden Grill provides a convenient spot for lunch. The sit-down, farm-to-table restaurant spotlights New American cuisine inspired by ingredients from Hudson Valley farms. The Bronx Zoo is nearby, and it doesn’t hibernate in winter. By day, see cold-weather creatures like Siberian tigers, sea lions, snow leopards, and Magellanic penguins outdoors. Later on, the zoo’s Holiday Lights celebration brings animated light shows and custom-designed animal lanterns.
Whether it’s under a blanket of snow or not, Central Park is a lovely place to take a wintry stroll — and more. There’s ice-skating on Wollman Rink; shopping at the Columbus Circle Holiday Market; and plenty of nearby places to grab breakfast or brunch, like the Central Park South location of Sarabeth’s, which sprung from roots in baked goods and preserves. Landmark Tavern on the Green, right in the park itself, offers brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings. You can also visit the American Museum of Natural History, home to the Origami Holiday Tree, a marvel festooned with painstakingly hand-folded paper creations designed by local, national, and international origami artists.

HALFWAY BETWEEN Cancun and Playa del Carmen — and far from the spring break crowds—Vidanta Riviera Maya offers a tropical paradise neatly wrapped in Mexico’s vibrant culture. Find your bliss lounging by your choice of pools, snorkeling right off the beach, or turning your stay into a learning vacation with a salsa-dancing or guacamole-making class. Evenings are for moonlit beach parties and movie nights with your toes in the sand. Free shuttles whisk you from one resort area to the other, and you can always stop by the activities stand and ask a Joy Squad member for an itinerary of the day’s events. Not convinced yet? Here are five more reasons why a stay at Vidanta Riviera Maya should be on your horizon.
Get your adrenaline pumping on the waterslides at Jungala, Vidanta’s on-site water park, where you can also take a dip in the wave pool and float along a lazy river surrounded by tropical foliage. Grab a frozen concoction at the swim-up bar, then duck into one of the spa huts for a relaxing treatment before lounging in one of the water park’s spacious cabanas. If water parks aren’t your thing, Vidanta is home to two additional indulgent spas. The elegant Brio Spa is the place for a tequila massage that infuses the healing properties of the local agave plant. At Spatium, walls made of Himalayan salt blocks set the scene for treatments such as halotherapy, which involves immersing yourself in a salt cabin. The treatment emulates centuries-old healing techniques believed to purify the air and boost metabolism.
From casual to elegant, Vidanta Riviera Maya’s nearly 20 restaurants offer a variety of flavors for your palate every day of the week. Eight fine-dining restaurants specialize in global cuisine. Nektar is the go-to spot for traditional Yucatan dishes, such as the cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork) cooked in a stone clay oven. For tapas and tantalizing paellas, Chiringuito is a favorite; cantina-style dishes like enchiladas and tacos are always made fresh at Frida’s; and for unique ceviches made with local seafood, Limón y Sal is one fine catch.
Thick jungle surroundings set the stage for JOYÀ, the resort’s own Cirque du Soleil experience. The Mayan-inspired multisensory journey includes a hypnotic fire dance and plenty of awe-inspiring acrobatics. With performers balancing on canes and a trampoline wall with stunts that will have you talking for days, the 80-minute show was crafted to keep you on the edge of your seat. Opt for a three-course dinner and champagne package or make reservations at next door’s Nektar for before or after the show.
The resort’s 18-hole, par-54 course designed by legend Jack Nicklaus is a masterpiece that golfers of all skill levels love to brag about playing. Powder-white sand in some of the 28 bunkers, sparkling lakes dotting the course, and meticulously manicured greens and fairways made of fine Bermuda grass can cause plenty of distractions, but you’d better focus on your swing. Those beautiful bunkers and water hazards are known to trip up some of the most accomplished players.
