Ringing phones, pinging notifications, honking traffic — it’s all much too loud. So escape to calmer, quieter West Coast destinations where you can bask in the stillness of a museum, park, or beach.

An Eras Tour Through Portland, Oregon
ITINERARY
Portland is known for its indie spirit, green spaces, and food scene, but its history is worth a closer look. Over three days, explore the city’s immigrant roots and civic growth through museums, architecture, gardens, and landmark sites that show how Portland’s past still shapes the city today.
In Old Town Chinatown, pass beneath the ornate Chinatown Gateway, marking what was once the second-largest Chinatown in the U.S. Inside the Portland Chinatown Museum, the permanent exhibition Beyond the Gate: A Tale of Portland’s Historic Chinatowns brings early Chinese immigrant stories to life through artifacts, oral histories, and animated films, illuminating how these communities shaped Portland’s historic Chinatown. Next, linger in the serenity of Lan Su Chinese Garden, then settle into Yun Shui Teahouse for a traditional Gong Fu Cha tea service.
Afternoon
Begin at Kaizen Sushi where a chef-curated omakase, rather than the menu, drives the meal. After dinner, stroll Japanese American Historical Plaza, a moving tribute to the Japanese American experience. Bronze sculptures and poetry-inscribed granite stones honor the community’s strength and resilience amid World War II internment. A free mobile app featuring the voice of Japanese American actor and activist George Takei adds context to the plaza’s significance.
Evening
For a darker chapter of Portland’s history, descend into the Shanghai Tunnels, an underground network of passageways said to be tied to early 1900s smuggling, gambling, and the unfortunate practice of “shanghaiing” sailors — kidnapping unsuspecting, intoxicated men and forcing them into labor at sea. Guided 90-minute tours separate history from lore while exploring the city’s seedier side. Afterward, settle in at Old Town Pizza & Brewing, a famously haunted favorite located just above the tunnels.
Evening
Spend the afternoon at the Portland Art Museum, home to Pacific Northwest works, significant Native American collections, and film screenings at the Tomorrow Theater. Through February 28, 2027, the museum presents The Art of Mark Rothko, a chronological look at the Portland-raised artist’s emotionally resonant abstract paintings. The museum’s new entrance pavilion also bears his name. Hungry? Refuel at the on-site Coquelico Cafe, known for light bistro fare, wines, and beers.
Afternoon
Start your day at The Daily Feast, where breakfast and brunch favorites, like avocado toast and fluffy buttermilk pancakes, are served until 2 p.m. Then head to the Oregon Historical Society, where three floors trace Oregon’s story from early settlement to today. Through September 20, don’t miss From Highway 101: Images of Oregon’s Most Iconic Highway, a special exhibition marking this year’s centennial of Oregon’s Highway 101 with striking imagery of classic lighthouses, secret beaches, and bridges.
morning
Wind down your trip at Pittock Mansion, built in 1914 by publisher Henry Pittock as a cutting-edge “smart home,” complete with an elevator, intercoms, central heating, and walk-in refrigerator. From its West Hills perch, take in wide city views that stretch to Mount Hood on clear days. Nearby, wander the International Rose Test Garden, where more than 10,000 rose bushes bloom from late May through October. Then, cross the street to the Portland Japanese Garden, where seasonal demonstrations and art exhibitions deepen the experience. The on-site Umami Cafe offers light bites, desserts, and Japanese teas.

Quiet Coastal Retreats
As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, it’s worth noting five historical milestones that shaped the West Coast, including exciting expeditions and transformative tech.
In 1803, the United States nearly doubled in size when it bought the Louisiana Territory from France — and only paid about 4 cents per acre. President Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new land. In 1805, after a long trek from St. Louis, they reached the Pacific Ocean. By finding a water route to the West Coast, Lewis and Clark blazed a trail for pioneers.
Lewis and Clark’s Expedition
The best kind of thrills appear unexpectedly. They can make your heart race or your taste buds light up, turning the smallest, most ordinary moments into bright, joyful details that weave themselves into conversation long after they’ve happened. Let those memories stack up in Anaheim, a city drenched in Southern California sunshine and sprinkled with a little extra magic.
Anaheim buzzes with a feeling of possibility, and chances are your story begins at Disneyland Resort. The moment you walk through Disneyland Park’s gates, it’s as though someone quietly raised the color saturation on the world around you. A stroll down charming Main Street, U.S.A., builds anticipation with every step toward Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Surrounding the pointed spires and turrets, nine themed lands welcome you with dozens of attractions.
The Matterhorn Bobsleds send you careening through the mountains in a wild run-in with a yeti, while Space Mountain launches you into a dark, star-streaked dash through space. And all throughout the park, live entertainment, character meet-and-greets, and grand finales make the whole experience feel like one big, beautifully choreographed show.

Zoom out just a little, and you’ll find the Anaheim Packing District in the heart of the city. It’s a lively, walkable pocket of the city with historical buildings and Farmers Park that’s made for strolling, snacking, and savoring the local atmosphere. The star at the center of it all: the Anaheim Packing House. The former citrus packing warehouse — it is Orange County, after all — was lovingly preserved and retrofitted into a modern market hall. If your idea of a thrill is finding the bite
you’ll be thinking about on the flight home,
this is your playground.
Start upstairs with a gooey grilled cheese masterpiece from Black Sheep GCB. From there, sample ramen and hand rolls at Zabon Ramen & Rolls, classic fish and chips at The Chippy Fish & Grill, colorful macarons from Parfait Paris, and Hans’ Homemade Ice Cream. Gastropubs like The Iron Press keep the vibes
(and craft beers) flowing.
The Flurry of Flavor in the Packing District
Next comes the thrill of the hunt — for treasure. Take a day to wander the palm-fringed streets of Downtown Anaheim’s Center Street Anaheim and be rewarded with a hip hangout decorated with shops. With indie boutiques, cozy cafes, and a weekly farmers market, the area will add a spring in your step as you discover finds around every corner.
A few steps off the promenade, Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center keeps things fresh with an ever-changing lineup of exhibitions, events, and activities, plus indoor galleries and an outdoor courtyard that make it easy to linger a little longer.
Bonus: Bargain-lovers should pop into Thriftyland 101, a quirky, vintage-packed playground about 2 miles away where you can score retro gems and discounted Disney memorabilia. (Because half the fun is never knowing what you’ll spot next.)

More than 300,000 people seeking land and opportunity in the mid-1800s followed the Oregon Trail, a 2,000-mile route from Missouri to the West Coast. It was a journey fraught with disease, accidents, and harsh weather. But survivors populated the Pacific Northwest and fostered transcontinental trade, fulfilling the nation’s so-called Manifest Destiny. Today, highways like Interstate-80 follow the trail, and historic sites preserve deep ruts left by years of wagons, animals, and humans.
Oregon Trail Travails
John Steinbeck dubbed Route 66 The Mother Road in The Grapes of Wrath, his tale of Dust Bowl farmers migrating to California. The highway debuted in 1926 as a zigzag network of existing roads (not always paved) from Chicago to Los Angeles. Route 66 eventually became the main route west and a symbol of freedom and adventure, with a hit song and TV show encouraging travelers to “get their kicks” at its roadside attractions.

Tiny silicon chips — integrated circuits made of refined sand — powered huge developments in computing and electronics, inspiring the name of a tech hotbed centered in Santa Clara County, California. Starting in the 1960s, Silicon Valley’s potent mix of elite universities (like Stanford), defense contracts, venture capital, and entrepreneurial culture fed explosive growth in the semiconductor industry. Breakthroughs in data processing and storage made possible the electronics we rely on today in phones, cars, and other smart devices.
Silicon Valley Surge
San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district became the epicenter of a cultural earthquake in the 1960s. Young people from around the world converged there to show solidarity against mainstream norms and the Vietnam War, instead embracing hippie lifestyles, psychedelic music (like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane), communal living, and drugs such as LSD and marijuana. The movement reached its peak during 1967’s Summer of Love, when messages of peace, love, and freedom dominated pop culture.

At the stadium entrance, two larger-than-life Angels caps welcome fans. And when the Angels win, the halo shines brightly, turning the drive home into a victory lap. Based on novels by Michael Crichton, the timelines for the Jurassic Park films span 65 million years. The seven films inspired by this series hit theaters between 1993 and 2025. And we bet it will take you mere moments to fall in love with the unforgettable setting that became one of the franchise’s biggest stars. Known as Isla Nublar in the 1993 original and several follow-up Jurassic Park films, the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park in Kauai (Hawaii's fourth-largest island) is the breathtakingly rugged region where the dinosaurs roar back to life. The area is generally inaccessible by car, so book a helicopter or boat tour to immerse yourself in dramatic views of the cliffs, valleys, and ocean. Don’t worry, we’ll leave the jump scares at home.

Quite possibly the most heartfelt scene in this 1993 rom-com is one that relies more on audio than visuals. On Christmas Eve, 8-year-old Jonah calls into a national radio show in an attempt to find his dad, Sam (Tom Hanks), a new wife after his mother dies. We won’t spoil any plot points if you haven’t seen this yet, but we highly recommend streaming the Nora Ephron film before your next trip to the Pacific Northwest. Once you do, take a detour to Athenian Seafood Restaurant and Bar at Seattle's Pike Place Market. The since-1909 restaurant is where Sam meets his pal Jay (Rob Reiner) to discuss dating after his wife’s death over steamed clams and beer. Snag one of the stools that line the counter to dive into that same meal, or order other classics like clam chowder or fish and chips as you relish in views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

"Hey, you guys!" It has been 40 years since the illustrious 1985 action-adventure comedy debuted, yet anyone who has seen The Goonies can still quote and picture many of the memorable scenes. Among the most notable sequences is the opening scene. The Fratellis steer past Ecola Inn, then join a 4x4 rally along Cannon Beach in northwest Oregon, where the 235-foot Haystack Rock towers over the shoreline. Make a pilgrimage to the rock at low tide, and you’ll have a good chance of spotting sea stars, puffins, wild birds, and more. Although the natural beauty is worth a trip alone, there’s plenty to explore nearby, including downtown art galleries, a farmers market, and restaurants featuring locally sourced seafood.

Inside Griffith Park’s more than 4,210 acres, enjoy “A Lovely Night” at the Griffith Observatory in the exact spot where Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) waltz through the atrium in this 2016 movie musical. As you walk through the tall, airy corridors and witness the stars lining the planetarium, you might also begin to recognize the observatory from 1955’s Rebel Without a Cause. Film buffs hypothesize that Mia and Sebastian continue their sweet and starry-eyed date here as a nod to that flick. During the 2014 blockbuster drama, Godzilla and a cohort of MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) converge on the Bay Area with the iconic Golden Gate Bridge as the backdrop. Although this scene involved serious military combat — ending with Godzilla being tranquilized and falling onto the bridge, destroying the southern end — you can savor a much more peaceful outing on the emblematic orange bridge. Soothing, artistic exploration awaits at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where travelers can spend hours walking among more than 50,000 objects of art. Along with pieces from local Bay Area artists, the collection also includes intricate brushstrokes from the likes of Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Frida Kahlo, and many others. Take your time walking through the contemporary and modern works that span mediums — paintings, sculptures, and one of the largest spaces permanently dedicated to the study, presentation, and interpretation of photography at any U.S. art museum, the Pritzker Center for Photography. Heck, the building itself inspires reflection. Outside, the museum's rippling facade resembles the fog that hovers above the San Francisco Bay. On the third floor, linger next to the Living Wall, a cavalcade of greenery where more than 19,000 leafy plants cover one of the largest public living walls in the country.

At the entrance to the Puget Sound, Fort Worden Historical State Park near Port Townsend, Washington, combines living history with serene coastal surroundings. Built at the end of the 19th century, the fort initially served as a coastal defense installation before merging with the surrounding beaches and forests to form today’s park. Along 12 miles of trails, visitors can take a historic journey past former fort buildings and gun batteries, or they can opt for a more natural walk along the beach at low tide. Eastbound strides will lead all the way to Port Wilson Lighthouse, overlooking Admiralty Inlet. On the west side of the park, some of the trails border a peaceful lagoon ideal for contemplation. High tide is the best time to rent a paddleboard or kayak from Cleanline or Wheel Fun Rentals and paddle up either the Necanicum River or Neawanna Creek to Necanicum Estuary Natural History Park. Bordered by forest shores and sand dunes, this tranquil estuary, where both waterways meet the Pacific Ocean, doubles as a flourishing habitat for species in and out of the water. If you’re lucky, you may spot bald eagles soaring overhead while blue herons wade into the water; river otters paddling nearby as coho salmon and trout dart beneath the surface; and hungry Roosevelt elk searching for snacks along the water.
