It’s Time To Have The Menopause Talk: Everything You Need To Know
For far too many women enter menopause with far too little information about what they should expect. Research shows that almost half of women say they do not feel informed “at all” about menopause and 60% say they did not start learning about menopause until they experienced symptoms.1
And a big reason why women feel uninformed is because we don’t talk about menopause enough. Open, honest conversations around menopause mean women can share their experiences without shame, empower themselves with expert-backed advice, and learn about products like OLLY Mellow Menopause.*
Of course, creating open dialogue may feel intimidating. Here’s where to begin.
Board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist Kiarra King, M.D, FACOG is a Chicago-based practitioner. King studied Kinesiology at the University of Michigan, graduating with honors. She received her Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed her residency at the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Outside of her practice with patients, she is a speaker, consultant, media source, and content creator.

Conversation Starters
Women should feel like they can open up the menopause dialogue with the people in their lives —from family members to friends.
Not only will this help normalize these sorts of conversations, but it will help women share their experiences with their loved ones.
And, hopefully, feel less alone.
Here are some ways to kick off these convos.
I was never taught about menopause when I was your age, so I wanted to share with you what I’m going through so one day you'll know it’s normal and OK to talk about. What questions do you have about menopause?
To younger female family members
I’ve struggled with hot flashes throughout the day—what have you found to help?
To friends in menopause
You may have noticed I’ve been feeling more fatigued lately. Because I’m going through menopause, I’ve noticed that my energy levels fluctuate—I was wondering if you could take on more of the housework on days I’m more tired?
To a supportive partner
Some days I feel a bit off or down, which is a natural part of going through menopause for many women. When that happens, do you mind if I reach out to talk about it?
To friends and family members
What unexpected things have you found to be beneficial or empowering about menopause?
To other women who have experienced menopause

— Rachel E

What should I know about exercise during menopause?
What can I do about my changing libido?
How will menopause affect my skin & hair?
Hot flashes are the worst—what can I do to deal?
Sometimes I feel worried and don’t know why. Could this be related to menopause?
I’ve never struggled with sleep before — why now?
The first thing to know is that movement can help ease many common symptoms related to menopause, so it’s important to keep with the habit.
But you may want to switch up how you work out: Research done on menopausal women shows that resistance training improves bone density, hot flashes, and body composition compared to cardio.8
OLLY Extra Strength Daily Energy fuels your internal power source by delivering ingredients that support energy production at the cellular level.*
For some women, sexual desire and satisfaction declines during this time. This can be because of estrogen decline, vaginal dryness, or other issues related to menopause.7
“Foreplay and lubricants can help here,” says King. “And I always recommend open communication with one’s partner. Sex should be enjoyable and part of that is understanding changes in a partner that may impact sex.”
You may also want to consider supplement support
like Lovin’ Libido, which contains ashwagandha to help boost desire and satisfaction*.
Collagen declines by about 30% within the first five years of menopause.5 And many women note a decrease in hair density.6 So it’s completely normal to see changes in the mirror.
Here’s the fun part: Use this as an excuse to update your skin and hair care routine! Use collagen-supporting products like vitamin C serums, retinol, and SPF. Support hair growth with caffeine and peptide-infused topicals and scalp massages.
They are the worst. And unfortunately they happen often: 87% of women say they get hot flashes daily and 33% say they get more than 10 a day.4
Have quick tricks to use in the moment: “These include, dressing in layers, carrying a small handheld personal fan, avoiding drinking hot beverages, having access to cooling beverages or even a cool towel,” says King, noting that a supplement like OLLY Mellow Menopause can help make symptoms more manageable.*
Those worried feelings are not just in your head! Thanks to physiological changes in the body, many women experience more day-to-day mood changes than they had before. And a not so fun fact:
This often kicks-off in perimenopause.3 “Understanding these mood changes happen is the first step. You should also develop coping mechanisms such as therapy, exercise, journaling, and meditation, to use when these feelings arise,” says King. You can also try OLLY Mellow Menopause, which contains GABA, an amino acid that starts working quickly (within 60 minutes, everybody is different) to support mental relaxation and help combat the acute effects
of stress.*
You’re not alone. Most menopausal women experience sleep disturbances.2 These are caused by hormonal changes or discomfort from other struggles, like hot flashes or body aches, notes King.
Refresh yourself with the sleep basics: “Establish a routine—like waking up and going to bed at the same time. Limit caffeine. Get regular exercise. Lower the thermostat or sleep with a fan,” says King. Try high-quality supplements to help improve sleep quality, like OLLY Mellow Menopause, which uses a herbal blend called EstroG-100® and GABA.*
