Michelle Lipkowitz took over as Managing Member of Mintz’s DC office in April 2023, inheriting an office culture with a long history of community service and engagement. It is no coincidence that Michelle shares this deep sense of purpose and service and, through her leadership, is building on that strong foundation by weaving diversity, equity, and inclusion into the fiber of the office.
In this video, Michelle discusses the importance of service and driving DEI imperatives for both attorneys and clients, while Associate Laura Martin reflects on the impact of Michelle’s leadership.

Amplifying LGBTQ+ Voices and Creating Community
Along with promoting equity and inclusion for individuals
who identify as LGBTQ+, the Mintz Pride affinity group raises awareness and nurtures connections throughout the Mintz community.
In the last 12 months, Mintz Pride has undertaken a number of initiatives to bring colleagues together. Highlights included hosting a firm-wide trivia event focused on LGBTQ+ history and cultural contributions; launching a campaign spotlighting legislative activity, advocacy groups, and noted LGBTQ+ leaders; and holding a monthly book club — led by Associate Jessica Goudreault — that provides a safe space for conversations about issues like queer identity, gender, and intersectionality.
Outside of Mintz, the firm advises on a number of important pro bono cases involving LGBTQ+ issues.
We want to ensure that LGBTQ+ attorneys feel comfortable in the environment they work in and with the people around them. It’s critical from a human perspective and a professional one.
Chair,
Suman Chakraborty
Mintz Pride
harnessing the power of our community of women
Our women attorneys make outstanding contributions to the firm, their clients, and the legal profession. To support their success, the Women’s Initiative is dedicated to advancing their careers through leadership development, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Under the leadership of Geri Haight, Chair, the group has recently reestablished the Women’s Associate Subcommittee with new members and formed new subcommittees on pathways to membership and other areas of priority.
Creating a welcoming, accepting environment for every person at the firm is a fundamental goal of the Mpower
well-being program. We promote belonging through a
variety of education and awareness efforts, including:
Advancing Well-Being to Nurture an Inclusive Culture
When George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in 2020, San Diego–based Member Randy K. Jones sent a heartfelt email to colleagues, urging them to use their legal training to press for social justice. Many responded, including Associate Nicole M. Rivers, who helped Randy form the San Diego Addressing Racial Inequality Working Group to counter systemic racism and police brutality through the legal system, foster engagement with the community, and create a candid dialogue among colleagues at the firm.
Banding Together to Advance Racial Equity
Groups like our initiative are vital. There’s no time like the present to make change, and change is absolutely necessary.
Compensating employees when they go above and beyond promotes professional development, supports diversity, and respects employees’ personal commitments. With this in mind, we updated the firm’s Flexible Work Arrangement Policy to advance these goals by allowing associate-level employees working reduced hours to receive a “true-up” bonus when their client billable hours are at least 5% above their targeted hours. Providing this additional payment to eligible attorneys, Patent Agents, and Technical Advisors helps align compensation with our employees’ valuable contributions.
Staff and business professionals of color face unique challenges in the workplace. To intentionally create the space to address this, in May 2023, Mintz launched the Staff Talent Affinity Resource (STAR) group to provide social networking and professional development opportunities for all staff and business professionals of color at the firm. STAR currently has more than 150 members across all of Mintz’s offices.

Mintz is assisting The League of Women for Community Service (LWCS), one of the longest continuously running Black women's organizations in America, in real estate matters related to renovations of its historic Boston headquarters. These critical updates will enable LWCS to continue serving as a forum for informing the public about pertinent issues that affect the social, economic, and general well-being of the Black community.

Mintz’s pro bono work intentionally serves underrepresented communities of people every day. Through the firm’s pro bono legal services, marginalized individuals acquire the tools they need to help them survive and thrive. Mintz has fought hard to help and protect women, women of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals through its efforts and outreach. Some examples of this work are highlighted here:
An overview of the Mpower well-being program and resources for all new hires
Promoting educational webinars offered by our benefit vendors focused on topics such as the intersection of inclusion and well-being, financial empowerment
for women, and navigating child and elder caregiving

fostering diversity in our communities
Twenty years ago, Mintz alumni Deepak Jayaraman left law to pursue a more business-focused career. He landed at venture capital firm Antler Innovation, and in August 2022, Mintz became Antler’s official legal partner in the United States. Here, he tells Energy & Sustainability Chair Tom Burton about Antler’s approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion and why it’s good for business.
For 30 years, Mintz has assisted thousands of survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. The firm represents both individual survivors and nonprofits that support survivors like Ujima, a national organization at the forefront of new training and outreach tools to reduce violence against and homicides of Black women, and Fortify Rights, an international human rights organization addressing domestic violence in Thailand. Mintz continues to support client Nikki Bell, who is advocating for victims of prostitution and human trafficking through the Equality Model in MA (EMMA) Coalition and her own organization, LIFT. The firm has also assisted in drafting pending Massachusetts legislation that would decriminalize prostitution for prostituted people, many of whom are victims of human trafficking, while maintaining penalties for buyers and pimps. Attorneys also suggested legislative reforms in Thailand. Finally, we have worked on numerous appeals and amicus briefs in this area at the state and federal levels.

The Working Group develops initiatives in four key areas: litigation, mentoring, education, and pro bono work - and their impact in each has been profound. For instance, the Working Group represented a woman whose cellphone was taken by police and held for months following her arrest during a peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration. As a result of that litigation and as part of the settlement, the San Diego Police Department instituted a policy restricting the retention of seized cellphones. More recently, several attorneys in the Working Group used their legal skills to curb the use of discriminatory language in real estate documents in California by writing an article for a statewide legal publication that teaches attorneys how to remove discriminatory racial covenants from California housing deeds.
A mentoring partnership with the University of San Diego School of Law is one of the Working Group’s flagship volunteer projects. Each year, 15 to 25 attorneys are paired with diverse law students to provide a full year of mentoring and guidance in career-related areas, such as applications, interviewing, and networking. In another outreach effort, the Working Group is planning a seminar for diverse entrepreneurs to address common legal issues affecting businesses, similar to an earlier webinar series for Black business owners co-hosted with business and legal organizations. Within the firm, the Working Group launched a book club for attorneys and staff to raise awareness about entrenched intolerance and ways to overcome it.
From the earliest days of Afro Scholars’ inception in 2021, Mintz has partnered with the program, supporting its work to diversify the legal profession by nurturing a pipeline of diverse law students for top law firms. Sponsored by premier law firms and corporations, Afro Scholars identifies talented Black law students and provides them with mentoring, resources, training, and connections so they enter the legal profession as leaders.
Mintz is proud to partner with this important organization,
and in 2023 we welcomed two participating law students to its
Summer Associate program – Kasey Coleman and Jabril Wilson.

leveraging diversity to build thriving companies
Being able to work on a case with attorneys and watch assignments I worked on play a part in the case prep and trial itself made my summer special.
One thing that made my summer special was the attention and care that mentors gave me as a Summer Associate, both substantively and personally. They’re truly invested in your success, and it makes coming in every morning exciting as you get to stretch the boundaries of your legal knowledge.
HOVER TO REVEAL INSIGHTS
The people made my summer at Mintz. The attorneys wanted to make sure our experience was enjoyable and educational. Everyone was willing to make time to speak with us. We were encouraged to work on any transaction we thought might be interesting and I listened to important calls. Every day, I was excited to go to work and I am eagerly anticipating my return.
What stands out [at Mintz] above all is the people. Everyone made me feel valued. I am especially grateful for the time the Associates spent with me on an individual basis to ensure that I was learning and felt comfortable seeking advice. I can’t wait to get back in September.
The diverse and wonderful Summer Associate class made my summer memorable. I appreciate Mintz taking the initiative to diversify their workforce by hiring people who come from different backgrounds and perspectives. Many businesses talk about how important diversity is, but Mintz actually demonstrates how integral it is. Feeling welcomed and valued at Mintz made my summer special.
I have never before experienced the level of authenticity and compassion for coworkers that is present at Mintz. People laugh, build each other up, mentor one another, and acknowledge how time pressure affects peoples’ personal time outside of work. I appreciate the intentionality put into recognizing and lessening power dynamics in the workplace and the gratitude that people express towards each other.
Each person I interacted with, from the recruiting team to the summer program leads and the other Summer Associates, made me feel like a valuable addition to a team and showed me that it’s possible to have fun along the way.
I had the opportunity to assist on a case that went to trial while I was at Mintz. I [went] to court each day to watch it! It was rewarding to see the lead attorneys utilize my research in their motions and closing arguments; I did not anticipate that my work as a Summer Associate would have an impact in court!
One thing that made my Mintz summer special was meeting attorneys who seemed invested in getting to know me personally, teaching me, and answering my questions honestly.
Everyone at Mintz was willing to share their knowledge. Whether it was dropping in on the Summer Associate's office to explain an interesting development in a [matter], or giving general advice about balancing priorities inside and outside of the office, everyone I spoke to was interested in helping me succeed at the firm.
Learning new things and working with many talented people.

I didn’t even know I wanted to go into Big Law, or even what Big Law was, until I joined Afro Scholars. Through their mentoring and the access to incredible resources, they helped me with my career path and to pick the kind of setting that I would thrive in.
Through the Afro Scholars program, I had access to attorney mentors who served as a sounding board throughout my 1L year, from how to pass exams to how to be successful at a law firm.
It was especially valuable to learn exactly what it meant to be a practicing lawyer, which made it easier to plan for my future.

In connection with GLAD, the LGBTQ+ advocacy group, Mintz filed an amicus brief in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals advocating that PrEP, an HIV/AIDS medicinal preventative treatment, should continue to be covered by insurance via the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Mintz attorneys, along with attorneys from GLAD, used a study by public health experts predicting the elimination of full PrEP insurance coverage would result in 3,900+ additional primary and secondary HIV infections in the first year alone, at a cost of $1.66 billion in long-term health care expenses. Extending this hyper-conservative analysis five years projects 20,000+ new infections at a cost of more than
$8 billion in health care dollars.

I was lucky to participate in Mintz's summer program in the Boston office during my 1L and 2L summers. The firm's dedication to diversity and inclusion was apparent through the summer program, such as the carefully crafted mentorship program centered in inclusivity and support. The most amazing part of my experience was witnessing how attorneys and staff shared this commitment to diversity and carried it with them in their day-to-day work and interactions.
The mentorship and collaborative environment here were completely different than anything I’ve heard about from my friends who had summer positions at other large law firms. From day one, my mentor was excited to talk to me, review my assignments, and give me an honest look at firm life as a junior Associate. We stayed in touch all year and reconnected at the office on my first day back at the firm.
The junior Associates I worked with really took me under their wing. They walked me through assignments step by step while also explaining the larger context of the deal we were working on and how my assignment fit into that. They were always available for questions and made me feel right at home at Mintz!
Joining a firm as a Summer Associate can be overwhelming. One thing that made my summer at Mintz special was how unbelievably welcoming everyone was. I was always able to find someone that was more than happy to help, and that sense of collaboration and community played a big role in informing my decision to return as a first-year Associate.

One thing that made my Mintz summer special was meeting attorneys who seemed invested in getting to know me personally, teaching me, and answering my questions honestly.

The people made my summer at Mintz. The attorneys wanted to make sure our experience was enjoyable and educational. Everyone was willing to make time to speak with us. We were encouraged to work on any transaction we thought might be interesting, and I listened to important calls. Every day, I was excited to go to work, and I am eagerly anticipating my return.

Along with promoting equity and inclusion for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, the Mintz Pride affinity group raises awareness and nurtures connections throughout the Mintz community.

Highlights included hosting a firm-wide trivia event focused on LGBTQ+ history and cultural contributions; launching a poster campaign spotlighting legislative activity, advocacy groups, and noted LGBTQ+ leaders; and holding a monthly book club — open to employees and attorneys in all offices — that provides a safe space for conversations about issues like queer identity, gender, and intersectionality.
Outside of Mintz, the firm advises on a number of important pro bono cases involving LGBTQ+ issues.
