Asylum Granted
for a Family of Honduran Refugees
Since 2019, attorney Amanda Asaro has led a New York–based pro bono team in representing a Honduran family of five in an asylum case. After three years of work helping the family apply for asylum, obtain work authorizations and psychological health services, navigate the school application process, and more, the team secured a rare stipulation from the government to grant asylum for the entire family, obviating the need for an evidentiary hearing.
In this discussion, attorney Susan Finegan explores the case with Amanda, who shares why it was so critical to secure a victory, the importance of Mintz’s pro bono work, and what she personally took
away from the experience.

The Pro Bono Committee was so impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of the New York asylum team in representing this deserving family over the past three years. Because of the team’s extensive preparation, the clients’ dream of a favorable ruling was realized.
