Working with survivors of human trafficking has been one of the highlights of my career. Being able to represent these inspiring survivors both in courtrooms
and in front of the legislature
has been an honor, and I hope to continue to fight for changes
in the law that recognize and support the needs and rights
of the exploited.

Mintz’s pro bono work intentionally serves underrepresented communities of people every day. Through our guidance, marginalized individuals are given fairer access to the legal services they need to help them survive and thrive. Mintz has fought hard to help and protect women, women of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals through its efforts and outreach.

Since 2012, the Fellows Program, currently a project of the Massachusetts A2J Commission and the Lawyers Clearinghouse, has enabled retired and retiring lawyers and judges to partner with organizations to increase equal access to justice for all. Although lawyers are encouraged to provide pro bono services throughout their careers, they are not often offered a role to play once they move toward and into retirement. By matching senior lawyers with groups that need their help, the Fellows Program allows these lawyers to use their specialized skills and extensive experience to do engaging pro bono work and remain active members of the legal community.

The success of the Fellows Program has inspired its replication in numerous other states. Our vision extends beyond the immediate impact of the program; we aim to foster a cultural shift within the legal profession here in Massachusetts, and beyond.
Over the past year, Mintz has undertaken many pro bono initiatives, including working with members of the LGBTQ+ community to create safe online spaces for teens, providing high-level training on health care for trans people, and dedicating support to individuals seeking a name or gender-marker change on a pro bono basis.
In 2023, Mintz was once again honored with the annual Beacon of Justice Award by the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA). The award recognized law firms that had demonstrated significant “efforts to address issues related to LGBTQ+ rights and/or gender-based equity issues that intersect with racial equity.”
