There are roughly 65 water funds globally that have about $35 billion in assets under management. It's a niche that's been around for a while, but it's one that continues to grow as concerns about water shortages induced by climate change––and ideas on how to adapt or avert them all together––grow with it. Money managers saw inflows of $3.9 billion with the launch of six new water funds over the past year. Of the 65 water funds, 45 with complete sector allocation data showed an average mapping of exposure across six sectors: basic materials, consumer cyclical, industrials, technology, utilities, and surprisingly, healthcare. This average allocation engages our discerning eye about thematic purity and provokes a conversation about whether and how investors can move the needle with water-focused strategies.
