Hello, upstate New York customers. Here's your latest energy news.
A connection to caring:
Assisting our customers in times of greatest need
Illness, natural disasters, job loss and the pandemic. Life-changing events can take us by surprise and sometimes leave us struggling to pay our bills. In times like these when we need extra support, our Consumer Advocates are here to help. They are specialists who provide one-on-one assistance by connecting customers with available programs – our own – as well as community resources and services to help pay energy bills and more. While advocates are especially busy this time of year, assisting customers with winter bill help, they support assistance year-round.

Project C: Our communities, our commitment
From neighborhood beautification
to workforce development, we’re
thinking beyond our conventional energy delivery services and helping to create a more equitable future for every customer and neighborhood we serve through an initiative called Project C. All employees are encouraged to join in by volunteering in the neighborhoods that need us most.
We’ve committed $17 million across our Massachusetts and New York service areas to help customers and communities meet their needs during this financially challenging time, including $6 million to further support our New York customers who are struggling to make ends meet this winter.
Best wishes for a safe

Energy-saving
tips
• When your fireplace is not in use, close the damper tightly.
• Caulk and weatherstrip around doors. Install door bottoms, thresholds
or door shoes to close gaps beneath exterior doors.
• Seal gaps around chimney and furnace flues with metal flashing
and high-temperature caulk.

during daylight hours.
• Check that connections at floor vents and registers are well-sealed where
they meet the floor, wall and ceiling, and keep them clear of furniture or rugs.

Seasonal
safety reminders
Make sure to burn only wood or newspaper when using a fireplace or woodstove.
Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and check regularly to ensure they’re working properly.
• Causes of carbon monoxide poisoning include a malfunctioning heating unit
or fuel-burning appliance or woodstove, or a blocked chimney. Schedule a
heating system checkup.
• Two types of detectors can help you stay safe year-round. Carbon monoxide
detectors sound the alarm when colorless, odorless CO is present. A residential
methane detector signals when methane is in the air, a sign of a natural gas leak.
• If you use a portable space heater, check to make sure it has an Underwriters
Laboratories safety label and an automatic shutoff device that turns the heater off if it
tips over or becomes too hot. Periodically check nearby objects to determine if they
feel hot.
Use your backup generator safely.
While a backup generator can keep equipment and appliances running in the event of a power outage, it’s important to operate it safely.
• Always consult with a qualified electrician before installing a generator.
• Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet.
• Ensure that your generator has a transfer switch.
• NEVER install or operate a generator inside or near open windows or doors.
• Read and follow manufacturer’s directions and safety procedures.
