30 Yearsof National Safety Month
The month of June is designated as National Safety Month, an annual NSC observance featuring free safety resources to highlight leading causes of preventable injury and death. NSC leads the Airbag and Seat Belt Safety Campaign in partnership with more than 25 other corporations and organizations.
The first Green Cross for Safety Award is presented to AK Steel for leadership in protecting workers and championing improvements in safety performance.
The Council’s Accident Facts publication becomes Injury Facts, shifting focus from “accidents” to preventable injuries and reinforcing a modern, prevention‑first safety mindset.

The first Robert W. Campbell Award honors Noble Corporation for excellence in integrating environmental, health and safety management with business success.
2003
Safety+Health debuts CEOs Who “Get It”, spotlighting leaders who demonstrate excellence in safety leadership.
2007
The Alive at 25 Parent Program from NSC launches, giving parents tools to identify risks and reinforce safe driving behaviors with their teen drivers.
Funded by the Texas DOT’s Traffic Safety Section, the Council partners with Texas employers to improve road safety by informing employers of the true cost of impaired driving-related injuries, assessing substance abuse efforts and addressing future needs.

The NSC Rising Stars of Safety program begins, celebrating young leaders under 40 transforming safety culture within their organizations.
2009
NSC becomes the first national organization to call for a nationwide ban on cell phone use while driving, defining a landmark stance on distraction. NSC expands survey services to help organizations measure safety culture, employee engagement and leadership visibility in safety efforts.
2012
NSC launches the Campbell Institute to advance environmental, health and safety excellence by collaborating with organizations on continuous improvement.
2013
The Council forms the Young Professionals Division, now the Emerging Safety Professionals Division, engaging future safety leaders with on key strategic initiatives and assisting in their career development. To help parents keep their newly licensed teen drivers safe, NSC launches DriveitHOME, providing parents with helpful resources to educate themselves and their teens.
NSC releases a downloadable employer toolkit on opioids in the workplace, offering actionable materials to help organizations identify risks and respond proactively.

The Council establishes the NSC Marion Martin Award to recognize and celebrate outstanding service and contributions in the field of safety by women. NSC and the U.S. DOT launch the Road to Zero Coalition, the nation’s boldest effort to end roadway fatalities within 30 years.
2015
NSC and the University of Iowa debut MyCarDoesWhat.org, educating drivers about new vehicle safety technologies and how to use them effectively.
2017
The Council’s Injury Facts evolves from a printed book into a dynamic, interactive website, providing real‑time safety data and insights to the public.
2018
NSC receives a grant from the McElhattan Foundation to accelerate the adoption of lifesaving technologies through the Work to Zero initiative.
During National Safety Month, NSC unveils a refreshed logo and renewed commitment to leading prevention efforts nationwide. NSC launches the SAFER initiative, giving employers comprehensive guidance to navigate safe workplace operations during unprecedented disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic. NSC establishes the Women’s Division and awards the inaugural Lorraine Pack Memorial Scholarship.

NSC releases Mobility, Technology and Safety: The Next 20 Years, a cutting-edge report exploring the safety concerns that will impact mobility in the decades to come.
2021
During National Safety Month, NSC and Amazon announce a groundbreaking partnership to reduce musculoskeletal injuries, supported by a five‑year grant to develop the MSD Solutions Lab.
2023
NSC launches Respond Ready Workplace to help employers reduce overdose deaths through naloxone education and onsite preparedness. NSC begins a serious incident and fatality (SIF) prevention project funded by U. S. Steel, building a free SIF prevention model and tools for organizations nationwide.
2024
NSC launches the Workplace Wellbeing Hub, offering integrated resources to support employee health, resilience and long‑term safety.
NSC receives nearly $1.3 million to advance roadway safety efforts in four states through its Our Driving Concern program – assisting employers in building a workplace culture of traffic safety. OSHA joins the NSC-led Road to Zero Coalition Steering Committee to eliminate traffic deaths – the agency will play a leadership role in driving strategies to end traffic fatalities by 2050.
