MSD Solutions Lab
About the
While the initiative is made possible through a corporate contribution from Amazon, the MSD Solutions Lab strives to prevent and eliminate MSDs across all industries. In December 2021, an advisory council was formed to further the program’s research, advocacy and engagement efforts. The advisory council incorporates health, safety and ergonomics practitioners, wellbeing researchers, and government, corporate and nonprofit executives across multiple industries and sectors, including academia, aviation, healthcare, insurance, logistics, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and retail.

How to get on board?
In June 2021, the National Safety Council and Amazon teamed up to tackle the most common workplace injury: musculoskeletal disorders. Together they’ve formed the MSD Solutions Lab, a first of its kind strategic initiative to address this critical issue by engaging key stakeholders, conducting research, identifying new technology, innovating solutions and scaling the results so all workplaces can benefit.
MSDs – such as rotator cuff tears, back strain and carpal tunnel syndrome – are the largest category of workplace injury. Often known as ergonomic injuries, they result from risk factors including forceful exertions, awkward or static postures, and repetitive movements. Affecting one-quarter of the global population, MSDs impact business efficiency and workers’ ability to live their fullest lives. MSD Solutions Lab provides a comprehensive approach to prevent these complex ailments.
By joining a coordinated employer action plan. The MSD Pledge commits companies to a standard for MSD prevention and helps organizations at all stages embrace and innovate MSD solutions, educate employees and employers about injury prevention and risk reduction, and share best practices globally.

Pioneering Research
To explore current and future MSD prevention-related strategies, the initiative will support comprehensive research efforts, including utilizing natural language processing, case studies, reports, and expansive systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The research findings will be available to all industries to explore and glean insights.
Innovation Challenges
To discover unique solutions and create a broader interest in preventing MSDs, the initiative will host innovation events on research, practice and business case challenges. These events will yield new technologies and processes to benefit MSD prevention efforts.
Grants
MSD Solutions Lab will award competitive grants to small businesses, academic institutions and university students. We're looking to fund multi-disciplinary innovative research solutions that will help companies of all sizes reduce ergonomic risks.
