Key Outcomes
At Nemours Children’s we measure several key outcomes that indicate we are prioritizing the health, safety and well-being of our associates, patients and families. We measure to learn more about how we can prevent errors and continually improve the safety of the care we provide.
Below are a couple of these key outcomes, hospital acquired conditions and infections, sometimes referred to as HAC’s and HAI’s. Each one has targeted improvement work associated with it.

A surgical site infection is a complication that occurs after surgery. These infections are generally related to the incision or site where the surgery was done. We measure all SSI’s and have prioritized below those related to surgeries that are specific to the heart, spine and central nervous system. In the graphs above, lower scores are better.

Hand Hygiene is a critical method to prevent the infections described above as well as to prevent acquired infections in general. Handwashing stops the spread of microorganisms. We complete thousands of audits of health care workers before entering and when leaving a child’s room. We have consistently had hand hygiene compliance approaching 100%. In the graphs above, higher scores are better.

CLABSI is an infection that can develop in central line catheters that patients need for life sustaining medications and nutrition. Above is our yearly number of CLABSI’s that we measure and work to improve upon year to year. In the graphs below, lower scores are better.
