Long known for bringing consumers high-quality, nutrient dense powerhouse foods, such as coconut oil, hemp and chia seeds, Nutiva has made a name for itself by using its way of growing and processing foods to support healthy people and planet. Their CBD line is no different—and the company has a vision for the impact this industry can have on the world. “Companies with safe and ethical practices need to to support one another in developing a long lasting, ethical and regenerative industry,” says Steven Naccarato, CEO at Nutiva.
“The untold story is about the positive environmental benefits of hemp farming. As a profitable candidate for crop rotation, hemp can play a key role in the revival of regenerative farming, which is essential to reducing atmospheric CO2 and protecting the planet.”
In keeping with Nutiva’s quest to produce the highest quality products, its full-spectrum hemp extracts are certified organic. This means that the hemp used is farmed without the use of pesticides or herbicides and that it is extracted without using harmful solvents, such as hexane or pentane. The company also maintains a fully traceable supply chain. “Though a strategic partnership we’ve created a closed-loop supply chain – meaning that every step from genetics to farming, extraction, distillation, dilution to blending are all done in one location, with nothing outsourced or out of our control,” says Naccarato. “This ensures a safe, consistent and fully traceable product, and ensures we never fail to meet the high standards that Nutiva was built upon and our consumers have come to expect.”
As the company builds out its product line, Naccarato says transparency and education are key to removing the stigma around CBD and hemp—and ensuring that products made with integrity, safety and quality are those that thrive in the marketplace. Naccarato cites a top challenge facing the hemp and CBD industry is lack of regulation, allowing bad actors who make false representations and erroneous claims and who don’t follow safe and ethical practices. These are products and practices that could put the industry at risk in the eyes of consumers.
“Transparency and education are areas where the industry can really come together and which can be beneficial to both the industry and consumers,” says Naccarato. “With a lack of legal framework in place, communication with other groups is key. Larger discussions about major challenges the industry currently faces as well as discussing potential solutions that would positively impact the hemp and CBD industry as a whole would be helpful,” he says. Currently, Nutiva is a member of the Hemp Industries Association, a non-profit trade group created to help advance the hemp economy and “to educate the market for the benefit of members, the public and the planet.”
Understanding both the challenges and the opportunities facing the industry, Nutiva continues to move forward developing products with a focus on integrity and innovation. In addition to staying true to organic and producing clean products, the company sees research as the other cornerstone critical to integrity and innovation. “As we research and learn more about all of the cannabinoids, terpenes and other phytocompounds contained in hemp, we’ll see more credible and condition specific products and with new exciting delivery forms to better incorporate hemp extract into your healthy lifestyle,” says Naccarato.
