OmniActive has taken this strategy to a global level by ramping up its sustainability and corporate social responsibility efforts. The key vehicle for this is the OmniActive Improving Lives Foundation (ILF), which is committed to fostering change to the communities, customers and consumers impacted by the company’s products and practices. The tenets of the foundation are built on the idea that every step in its supply chain provides an opportunity for improvement—whether it is a process, an ingredient, or the health and wellness of a person or community.
“Consumers’ buying decisions are increasingly based on a broader world view of how their purchases impact people, labor practices, the environment and even economies,” Parihar said. “Transparency and sustainability top the list for consumers. And it’s also becoming an important part of a company’s business practices.”
The program is aligned with broader initiatives outlined by the United Nations’ Global Goals for Sustainable Development and focuses on some of the most pressing issues in rural Indian communities including treatable eye/vision problems, addressing nutrition-related conditions like anemia, supporting women’s issues and improving sanitation and hygiene.
“We always expect the best, and the results have always seemed to exceed our expectation,” said Parihar, who attributes part of the success with engaging the community. “Instead of creating the program based on what we thought the farming villages needed, during this last wave of initiatives we went right to the source. We spoke to over 100 farmers, local government officials, local businessmen, schoolteachers, doctors and the women in the community to understand the key issues they were facing. We quickly found out that the approach of asking the villagers directly was not only unique, but we were quite surprised by the responses we received.”
ILF has already achieved extraordinary results from initiatives that underwrite eye care, testing and surgical procedures at the Shankara Eye Institute; providing audiobooks to visually impaired children; offering nutrition screening for women at risk of iron deficiency and anemia; empowering farmers with education and helping them to improve farming methods and practices; providing pilot training for future farmers to help them see farming as a profitable endeavor; and a variety of conservation efforts to support sustainable use of natural resources, recycling and soil health.
By any measure the program is a win-win. The foundation takes a long-term view of sustainability based on the ethical measure of a business – its people and impact on the planet, Parihar explained. “That is, when you prioritize environmental and social issues, the success of a company naturally follows.”
