BYD flagship all-electric sports-saloon has an ocean-inspired design that oozes elegance. Its X-shaped front and streamlined double U-shaped light clusters really make it stand out on the road, giving luxury models such as the Audi e-tron a run for
their money.
The plush, spacious interior boasts leather, heated and ventilated sports seats that are electrically adjustable, a 402-litre boot and even a 53-litre front trunk for storing stuff like cables. There’s a 15.6in touchscreen that rotates for landscape or portrait mode, and top-of-the-range tech that allows voice commands to operate a huge amount of features.
Powered by advanced BYD Blade Battery technology, with an impressive 354-mile range (Design version) and going from 0 to 62mph in 3.8 seconds (Excellence-AWD version), you can DC charge it from 30-80 per cent in 26 minutes.
FROM £45,695
This electric hatchback in the Ocean Series is practical, spacious and super-smart. The crease lines and flowing contours of its bodywork are seriously stylish – and inspired by the dynamic motion of dolphins (as indeed was the design of its front and rear lights). DOLPHIN shares the same advanced BYD Platform 3.0 and Blade Battery architecture as ATTO 3.
Inside the cabin there’s a rotatable 12.6in touchscreen, and the door handles are somewhat dolphin-like – a fun touch. There’s also a 345-litre boot and seating for five adults.
Among its many other virtues, it has a 265-mile range, a wealth of safety features and intelligent voice controls, while rapid charging will see the DOLPHIN get from 30 to 80 per cent in as little as 29 minutes.

With smooth handling, a long driving range and head-turning design, the SUV also has state-of-the-art tech and safety features throughout, making it the talk of the sector.
Sunday Times motoring expert Nick Rufford says: “Starting at just over £37,000, this zippy, smart-looking EV gives Tesla’s Model Y a run for its money. It’s well equipped too: big glass roof, eight-speaker sound system and room in the back for three adults (or two burly blokes).”
Rufford also finds that it “drives more smoothly over speed bumps and potholes than many electric cars” and “stands out from a distance in a car park”.
There’s a lot to love about the ATTO 3. Family-friendly, it has plenty of “fun touches” – such as its engagingly “chatty” voice control system – to go with its rock’n’roll styling and standout performance.

VISION OF THE FUTURE
Along with the aerodynamic, sporty exterior and dynamic alloy wheels, the ATTO 3 is equipped with the highly efficient 60kWh BYD Blade Battery, with a 150kW motor – and goes from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds.
An advance electric powertrain ensures a smooth, quiet ride, while the battery DC charges from 30-80 per cent in just
29 minutes.
There’s a 260-mile range on a full tank and an integrated heat pump to help preserve range in winter. It has a 440-litre boot
or a 1,338-litre capacity with the back seats down, while the innovative flat blade design of the battery allows for lots of extra cabin leg and head room.
Stylish design features include a gear shifter that echoes an airline control stick, and a central rotating 15.6in touchscreen console.
Intelligent Voice Control allows you to operate everything from the music volume, satnav, air conditioning and heated front seats to the panoramic sunroof, all while keeping your eyes on the road.
Visibility is boosted with 360-degree cameras, and safety features include Lane Keep Assistance and seven air bags.
It has been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating
by Euro NCAP, Europe’s leading independent safety
assessment programme.
Continuous head and tail lights have a wider beam of light for night driving, and front lights react automatically to changing road conditions.
Available in a host of vibrant colours, the Comfort model, from £36,990, features a huge amount of standard features, such as 18in alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof and heated, electrically adjustable vegan leather seats. The Design model, from £38,990, adds a bigger screen, electric tailgate and air purifier. There are even guitar strings on the door pockets, and they work too – for those times when you want to jam when you’re in a jam.

As the owner of an ageing petrol estate car, and with two growing boys old enough to care about climate change,
I know the time has finally come to trade in our old wheels
and go electric.
But for our family, like many others, any new vehicle must tick
a lot of boxes: plenty of legroom and space for our luggage is a must; it should have enough tech to keep everyone entertained; and it needs to offer a generous range to enable all our adventures together. Not forgetting, of course, a bit of pizzazz
to make it fun for Mum and Dad to drive.
FEEL-GOOD FAMILY FAVOURITE
AWARD WINNER
So we were impressed to discover that the ATTO 3 more than delivers on those fronts. The ample boot swallowed up our stuff with ease, while the spacious back seats meant the kids were comfy however long the journey. There was even extra room for those times when a pal or Granny needed a lift.
Smooth to drive, with impressive acceleration and a range to cover even our most ambitious days out, the ATTO 3 felt both safe and luxurious – those vegan leather seats are lovely. It’s good to know that our regular 140-mile round trips from home to visit our favourite museums in Cardiff would be easy without the need to charge along the way.
Perhaps what stood out for us most were the ATTO 3’s funky features, from the cutting-edge infotainment centre to its intuitive voice-activated tech. And the little design flourishes – the kids loved playing with the guitar strings in the door pockets, and they thought the air vents styled like CDs were super-cool. Of course, the best bit was knowing that while we were cruising around, we were in tune with the environment too.
