Alison: ‘We need to entertain five kids, from toddlers to teens’

I have three children with my partner, and he has two children from a previous relationship. Every other year, we’ll all go on holiday together. It can be tricky budgeting for seven people, but we’ve found that going for an all-inclusive package is ideal. It means the children can eat as much ice cream as they like and raid the buffet, while we can enjoy a few drinks in the evening without spending our holiday worrying about the final bill. Our kids are aged from three to 15, and with so many to entertain, choosing a hotel with plenty for them to do, like a kids’ club and water slides – plus free wi-fi for the teenagers – is crucial. We also want to be able to venture beyond the hotel, so we prefer a location where there are some activities the whole family will enjoy nearby, and a bit of culture for the grown-ups.

As a single dad with two young girls and no real concept of planning, holidays were often heading off on chuck-in-a-tent camping trips.
