But with dozens of sandy beaches (many of them Blue Flag winners), a vibrant nightlife and amazing seafood, the Algarve resort of Albufeira is our number one spot for family fun. Last year, we stayed at the award-winning Jupiter Albufeira Hotel, part of Jet2holidays’ Luxe Collection.
Our children are obsessed with pool-time – splashing around is their favourite thing to do on holiday – so we knew we wanted somewhere with a decent swimming pool.
Jupiter Albufeira has three beautifully maintained pools, including waterslides and an aqua playground (this scored us some serious parental points with Ellie and our youngest, Theo, 4). Joe’s more of an open-water guy and loves to surf, so he was thrilled with the daily free shuttle to the beach.
It wasn’t just the pool set-up the children went crazy for. The kids’ club was a huge hit, offering everything from arts and crafts and team games to drama and music. There’s even a kids’ spa. I can only vouch for the adults’ spa, but the back massage I booked myself in for after Joe and I went horse riding on the beach was one of the best I’ve ever had.
There are four on-site restaurants including a pizzeria, several bars and non-stop live entertainment. If you can tear yourself away from the fun, Albufeira’s charming old town, with its cobblestoned streets and tapas bars, is well worth a visit.
We haven’t told the kids yet, as we wanted to keep it as a surprise, but we’ve already booked our next trip with Jet2holidays (for a low £60pp deposit,* the balance paid in flexible monthly payments^).
We considered another hotel in Albufeira, just to mix things up, but once you’ve found the perfect place for your family, why would you go anywhere else?
“The hotel’s water park was really cool! There was a giant bucket that filled up with water and then tipped all over your head. And there were so many slides and water guns, too. It was so much fun. We played there all day long. In the kids’ club, we did plays and sang our favourite songs, and at night Mummy and Daddy let us stay up late for the kids’ disco. They’ve said if we’re very good, they’ll take us back to Portugal next year.”
