In the first of a six-part series celebrating the power of clothes, style guru Laura Jackson discusses the pieces that bring her most joy
“I have a really old jumper that I wore the day I gave birth to my son,” she says. “Every time I put it on it reminds me that I pushed out a baby in my living room one Saturday afternoon. It just makes me so happy.”
Clothes, she feels, are to be enjoyed and to raise a smile – something that can often be lost on social media with endless feeds of carefully curated images.
F
or Laura Jackson clothes are about so much more than trends. The self-professed hoarder has an emotional connection to pretty much everything in her wardrobe and says clothes can transport her back to the happiest moments in her life.
“Comfort is so
important to me. I hate being uncomfortable…
I am the ungirliest
girl you have ever met”

“It’s only once in a blue moon I look this good. When you see a picture of me dressed up, the likelihood is I’ll have a pair of trainers on underneath,” she says during our photo shoot, before recounting the reality of one trip to the Brit Awards.
Many would disagree, though. Jackson’s 154,000 Instagram followers, for starters. The 36-year-old broadcaster, supper club host, businesswoman and mother of two has become a go-to source of interiors and fashion inspiration in recent years, something she downplays with typical northern modesty (Jackson hails from West Yorkshire).
She’s always got a kick out of expressing herself through clothes. “When you’re at school, wearing a uniform Monday to Friday, the weekends are when you have that freedom to be you. It was so exciting going to birthdays aged nine or ten and getting into a party dress. I was really into that skirt over trousers trend and would wear them with bright tops.”
“My favourite item is a green velvet suit that I got from a market in Paris. Every time I wear it, it reminds me of a happy time”
Colour plays an important role in Jackson’s wardrobe. “I gravitate towards a bright colour or a frill or texture.” One of her favourite outfits is a forest green velvet suit she picked up in a Paris market with her husband, the photographer Jon Gorrigan. “You can wear it in so many different ways – I wear it with trainers or a T-shirt or a jumper, and I just love the fact that it feels like a fashion heirloom that I might, or might not, give to my daughter.”

“Underneath my ballgown I was wearing really bad knickers with holes in, and a pair of ski socks with some sliders! In my handbag I had my high heels and I switched them over just before going in to the event.”
Jackson’s ability to not take herself seriously is infectious. And it’s something that translates sartorially. The key, she says, is not to overthink it. “I’m really decisive when it comes to choosing outfits,” she says. “Though I still think I get it wrong a lot of the time.”

Ultimately, this is what it comes down to for her – connection. There’s a reason we hang on to wedding dresses and old school uniforms. Our wardrobes can hold powerful memories, a scarf or jacket reminding us of who we were when we wore them.
