isney’s Frozen the Musical is celebrating its second year of bringing joy and wonder to London’s West End. Based on the Disney animated motion picture of the same name – which turns ten this year – the live musical combines the empowering story of sisterly love with intricate stage design that brings the characters of Anna and Elsa to life.
With catchy numbers (including 12 new songs written specifically for the stage adaptation), fearless performances and a visually stunning set, this is an award-winning theatre experience for everybody. Disney’s Frozen the Musical is anything but a musical “just for kids”.
The quality of the staging and levels of performance from the cast put the show right up there with the finest to have graced the West End. You’ll be thinking: why didn’t I see it sooner?
Perfect for a date night, an evening with friends or a chance to get your culture fix, this lighthearted yet powerful musical should be at the top of everyone’s “to see” list, whether you’re a musical theatre fan or not. Disney’s Frozen the Musical is the show you didn’t know you needed.
First and foremost, it’s all about the singing – and here are some revelatory stories behind the scenes, and the songs, that make the production so memorable.
Inspired by Nordic architecture – experienced at first hand in Norway by multi-award-winning opera and theatre designer Christopher Oram, Scenic and Costume Designer for Disney’s Frozen the Musical – the castle setting is awe-inspiring. So how do you take an iconic animated feature and transform it into a first-class West End production?
“You get a sense of the mysticism and history of somewhere by going there,” recounts Oram. “We went to the same sources as the animators of the film and used the same jumping-off point to take it in a slightly different direction. Ours is more grandiose, more physical, more real.”
Coronation Day is one of the first opportunities the audience gets to admire the scale of the West End staging. Visitors flocking from all over the world to see Princess Elsa crowned queen flood the stage to create an engaging, humorous and powerful ensemble.
Soundtracked by a beautiful rendition of For the First Time in Forever, the chemistry between the cast is delightfully apparent.
“It’s a unique thing. A Disney show gives you the opportunity to go deeper into the details,” explains Oram.
The sheer size of the production allows designers, and admirers, to indulge in their love of detail. The stage is framed by beautifully carved wooden fixtures. On closer inspection, you can see that the carvings are similar to Nordic runes. The runic writing along the top actually spells out the plot of the musical while the carvings on the wings depict some of Oram’s favourite Disney movies, including The Little Mermaid. See if you can spot them.
“The Arendelle crest has a crocus motif, a flower of rebirth after winter, which we use liberally throughout. Obviously on the banners during the coronation, where they’re clear and visible, but the suits of armour also have those crests on them, and they’re embroidered on Elsa’s coronation gown,” says Christopher Oram, Scenic and Costume Designer for Disney’s Frozen the Musical.
The conclusion of this spectacular scene sees the stage slowly turn to ice, in an incredible feat by the design and production teams. It truly is a sight to behold as you witness Arendelle plunged into eternal winter.
Arguably one of the greatest Disney songs ever written, Let It Go is a ballad that was made for the West End.
As the first act comes to a close in the grandest of fashions, the
Drury Lane stage seamlessly transforms from Arendelle into an icy wonderland, accompanied by flawless vocals. The pivotal moment of this sensational scene can only be described as real-life magic – you’ll be left wondering: how on earth did that happen?
“It’s a song that means so much to so many people for so many different reasons,” explains Oram, “and to be able to bring it to life is wonderful.
“I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Disney movie fan; I grew up with the films and couldn’t be happier to have been part of this musical.”
The pride of the cast and crew who have worked so tirelessly to bring Disney’s Frozen the Musical to the stage is obvious, running through each and every performance.
Theatre fans will appreciate the technical prowess it takes to pull off a number like Let It Go so impeccably. Every aspect of the scene is mastered to perfection, and witnessing it in person is reason enough to book your ticket to this extraordinary production.
Referring to the “magical moment” in the scene, Oram jokes: “It is magic. It’s real-life Disney magic. That ‘moment’ is the literal icing on the cake.”
Disney’s Frozen the Musical is certainly a cake you want a slice of. The hairs on your arms and back of your neck will stand on end (not just because the stage turned to ice) when the audience around you gasp and cheer as the curtain comes down for the end of the first act. In the aftermath of Let It Go, the atmosphere in the theatre is palpable, creating an experience you’ll crave to have again and again.
The standout scene of the show is perfectly performed and sets up the second act with an intense feeling of excitement and anticipation. The interval can’t end soon enough. You’ll turn to the person next to you, speechless, and stare at each other for a moment, until one of you manages to let out an audible “wow”.

“In order to help ourselves practically realise the Hidden Folk and take the show in a slightly more mature direction, we really leant into the idea of the huldra rather than trolls,” says Oram.
Huldra, or hulder, are forest spirits in Norwegian folklore. They hark back to the traditional inspirations behind many of the important artistic choices made for this fantastic production.
Oram explains how he was inspired by the northern lights and rural Norway: “When you go into the wild and rugged landscape of the Norwegian fjords, and appreciate how few people there are… of course the huldra are out there! We wanted to play into those supernatural elements in this scene.”
The Hidden Folk, performers of the oh-so-catchy Fixer Upper, are tied to the spirit of the aurora borealis. Covered in moss, bark and leaves, these stone-like creatures are designed to be at one with nature.
Nordic Notions
The Hidden Folk were based on Nordic mythology
“That’s why Fixer Upper is so great – these group company numbers where you’re sold this familial story as well. It’s all so alive and on its feet, and the ensemble are having a good time.”
Providing a moment of relief during the tense second act, Fixer Upper is an out-and-out highlight of this seriously impressive show. You’ll find yourself tapping your toes along to the chorus in the theatre, then at work and at home too.
This infectious number is testament to a fantastic and ambitious musical, providing further evidence that Disney’s Frozen the Musical is an experience to be enjoyed by people from all walks of life and of all ages.
