a year after their one-night honeymoon in Otter Ferry, below
“In the early years we talked about getting married, but it fell by the wayside – maybe Janette was reluctant,” jokes Scott, 67, originally from Glasgow but now living near Blackpool.
“In the end we wed, without telling a soul, in Gretna Green on January 11, 2021, the 26th anniversary of our first date. Then we drove to the tiny hamlet of Otter Ferry in Argyll and Bute, where we’d enjoyed that first date, and recreated it with a walk along the beach. We spent one night there as our honeymoon – then drove to Glasgow, fessing up to one and all about our secret wedding.”
So, when Scott returned home, he wrote a review for Michael on the Travel Republic website, praising him for facilitating the three-night upgrade. “I would like to place on record our genuine appreciation and thanks to Michael for his extremely prompt help and attention,” he wrote.
That’s exactly the sort of review Travel Republic managing director Antonio Fellino loves to read. Excellent customer service with a travel expert at the end of the phone or online 24/7 is one of the central prongs of Travel Republic’s just-launched Power to the People manifesto.
“When I read good feedback I’m so proud,” Antonio says. “We put the customer at the heart of everything we do.”
Customer satisfaction guaranteed – Travel Republic honoured that commitment to Scott and Janette in luxe and love. Five stars all round.
One of the things Scott and Janette have in common is a love of holidays.
“I’d spend all year on holiday if I could,” says Scott, a self-employed project manager. “Janette’s more cautious but the one place I can always persuade her to travel to is Tenerife. She’d been going to Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island before we even met. It’s a proper town as well as a resort, so it’s a bit less touristy than the south.”

“We’d always seen it and thought it looked grand, so we went inside for a drink,” Scott says. “That’s when we had the notion to stay there for the last three nights of our holiday, coinciding with the anniversary. I wasn’t sure we’d be able to swap – it all sounded a bit complicated – so, without much hope, I rang Travel Republic customer services to at least put the question.”
“But I was surprised – Michael Robinson in customer services appreciated instantly what I wanted to do and was receptive. He even understood my machine gun-like Glasgow accent! A couple of hours after I’d rang, he called back to say it was all arranged. As he had my credit card details, he’d also sorted out the finances, getting us a refund on the first hotel for the nights we wouldn’t be there and then paying the GF Victoria. I was really impressed and earned some rare brownie points with Janette for organising the swap.”
The GF Victoria was every bit as luxurious and romantic as he and Janette had imagined.
“I’d say it’s the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in – phenomenal,” Scott says. “The way it’s decorated and laid out is beautiful – Janette described it as very zen. And the standard of service is all you’d expect from a five star hotel and more.”

So, for the couple’s first wedding anniversary, Scott booked a three-week trip to the island.
“I often book with Travel Republic,” he says. “The website is very user-friendly and it’s a good one-stop shop, listing the different options in a very clear way. I find the flights first and then choose the hotel and which level of board we want.”
Job done – but when Scott and Janette were on holiday, they took a fancy to spend the night of their anniversary in Puerto de la Cruz’s luxurious five star GF Victoria hotel.
