LANDING on Lanzarote can sometimes feel a bit like you’ve arrived on another exciting and fascinating planet – despite being just four hours from the UK.
On this sunshine island, you’re just as likely to see striking red mountains, exotic cacti and otherworldly black sand as spectacular coasts and gorgeous beaches.
In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking you should have packed a space suit in your generous 22kg baggage allowance with Jet2holidays.
Yet that’s the joy of this small but surprising island.
Lanzarote’s unique landscape, formed 15 million years ago when a series of volcanic eruptions rocketed out of the sea, and which has been sculpted by lava flows ever since, is delightfully different, allowing you to explore as well as relax.
Take the bright green lagoon that glistens in the crater of a volcano at Playa de los Clicos in El Golfo, or the tubes and tunnels that weave through a five-mile underground cave at Cueva de los Verdes. Both are Insta-perfect spots within easy reach of a sunlounger at your plush Jet2holidays hotel, and perfect for an inspiring trip.
Or why not enjoy a meal cooked with the heat of the island’s volcano – Timanfaya, in the centre of a national park?

Lanzarote’s looks are only one aspect of the wonders that await

Take in your splendid isolation at Mirador del Rio
Lanzarote is just 37 miles long by 12 miles wide, so it couldn’t be easier to get around.
Whichever Jet2holidays accommodation you have chosen, from affordable and comfortable right up to five-star luxury, the best way to start your journey of exploration is by chatting to one of Jet2holidays’ in-resort customer helpers about which trips and guided tours to take. They’re the best in the business, and Jet2holidays is Which? Travel Brand of the Year 2024.
You can book a hire car for some independent travel or rent a bike, stopping off at unspoilt fishing villages or some of the great viewing points. Alternatively, take a dune buggy trek – hurtling through the white desert sands, you’ll feel like an extra in Mad Max.
Still, after escaping the British drizzle – and with Jet2holidays’ low £60pp deposit* and flexible payment plans with zero fees, why wouldn’t you? – one priority is likely to be a beach.
The best ones for families are on the sheltered southern coast of the island, with golden sands, lifeguards overseeing calm waters, and promenades buzzing with cafés and entertainment. Be sure to check out Jet2holidays’ free child places.
Millpond-calm Playa Flamingo in Playa Blanca is a winner for tots, while older kids can snorkel just a few metres from shore at Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen and be rewarded with sightings of seahorses and eels.

At four miles long, Playa de Famara, in the northwest of the island, is a surfers’ paradise with rolling waves as dramatic as the volcanic cliffs that rise from its sands, while Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise is the spot for windsurfers.
Lanzarote is also renowned for scuba diving so expect barracuda and angel sharks to greet you among the underwater lava reefs, caves and shipwrecks. There’s even a submerged sculpture gallery with octopuses swimming among the exhibits. Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are the main diving centres with several schools offering try-out dives and courses.
If you’re feeling energetic, cycle the coastal path that runs along the shoreline from the island’s capital Arrecife to Playa Blanca. Along the way you’ll pass – and likely be tempted into – Lanzarote’s top shopping centre, the Biosfera Plaza, which as well as stocking all the international brands has an open-air cinema, crazy golf and an escape room.
Or for a more traditional day trip, amble around Arrecife and experience laidback Lanzarote life. Linger over lunch with the locals in a tapas bar or mooch around the traditional Saturday market. Then chill in style back at your hotel with a dip in the pool or a cocktail to kick off the night.
And you can’t leave Lanzarote without visiting the Cactus Garden, designed in typically quirky style by Lanzarote’s favourite son, artist and architect César Manrique. Not only does it feature over 4,500 of the spiky specimens from across five continents, but it also has a café selling cactus burgers and ice cream.
Adios Lanzarote – cacti later!
