NOTHING blows off the cobwebs of the festive season and pumps you up for a new year like a trip to the cinema to see an action movie, and that’s precisely what Plane, starring Gerard Butler, is here to do.
Buckle up for Plane
5 things you need to know
1
non-stop Action
The genre is the perfect antidote to the January blues, blending wit and charm with edge-of-your-seat tension and high-octane action sequences that get your heart racing and keep you gripped. That’s why moviegoers flock to action movies time and time again, and it’s a formula the producers of Plane have truly mastered, with the likes of Angel Has Fallen and Greenland already on their CVs. Leave the period pieces and the heavy dramas for another day. It’s time for fun, thrills, and a great outing to the cinema.
The moment Butler steps into the frame, you know you’re in for a good time. Action hero Butler is beloved by fans of 300, the Has Fallen franchise and many more, building a name for himself as one of the greatest action heroes to grace our screens. He brings charm and excitement to all his films, but Plane feels like vintage Butler, truly doing what he does best.
Plane makes excellent use of its leading man, perfectly utilising Butler’s easy charm to propel you through a story that feels as satisfying as your old favourites but irrepressibly new and exciting. And all this without sacrificing any of the white-knuckle moments you come to the cinema for. As Butler returns to his pilot‘s seat for the final climax and utters the soon-to-be-iconic line “full throttle”, you'll find yourself cheering in your seat at the fun of it all.

In an age when cinemas are crowded with superheroes and quests to save the galaxy, Plane is a refreshing tale, focusing on an everyday hero – a pilot dedicated to protecting his crew and passengers and getting back to his family.
Torrence is a brilliant lead character: a charming Scotsman who surprises even himself, rising to the occasion when those he’s responsible for are threatened.
He’s an ordinary person capable of extraordinary feats when put under pressure, and his quick thinking and selfless heroism are all the more remarkable for it.
As an actor, Butler has been repeatedly drawn to everyman characters over larger-than-life superheroes, and he fills the role of fearless captain with relatability and charm. You can’t help but empathise with him as he responds to escalating, impossible circumstances and wonder: if it were me, what would I do?

Butler is supported by some great actors, including Mike Colter – who’s familiar to Marvel fans as Luke Cage and from his appearances in Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Safe to say, he’s a man who knows his way around a high-intensity fight sequence.
But Colter shows he’s more than just his Marvel alter-ego, bringing mystery and nuance to recently apprehended fugitive Gaspare. There’s more to the character than meets the eye, and as his and Butler’s uneasy alliance develops, it becomes one of the most interesting dynamics in the film.
