The steel industry is a major contributor to climate change, but one manufacturer is working towards a production process with just a single by-product: water

n a world striving for economic growth that will lift living standards and drive prosperity, we need to continue manufacturing steel. But the world also faces a climate crisis, to which the sector is a major contributor. Enter global steel producer SSAB, whose use of HYBRIT technology aims to make mass production possible with virtually no carbon emissions. Instead, the only by-product would be water – which can be reused in the production process.

Here’s everything you need to know about this breakthrough
The industry accounts for around 7 per cent of CO2 emissions globally, according to the International Energy Agency. That means the sector is one of the largest contributors to the climate crisis. Without confronting this issue, it will be very difficult for the world to meet the climate change targets set in the Paris Agreement – and therefore to limit further global warming, with all its disastrous consequences.
7 %
of global CO2 emissions comes from the steel industry, making it a big part of climate change
How serious a problem are carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in steel production?
1
SSAB’s HYBRIT technology offers a new way to manufacture steel. It replaces the coking coal traditionally used to make iron ore-based steel with hydrogen and electricity produced from fossil-free sources. The process virtually eliminates CO2 emissions from the production process, and SSAB believes this technology could be used to produce fossil-free steel on an industrial scale as soon as 2026.
How does SSAB plan to tackle the steel sector’s emissions problem?
2
How can other steel producers make use of SSAB’s HYBRIT technology?
SSAB is conscious that while its technology is groundbreaking, the company is not big enough on its own to drive the sector’s response to the climate crisis. At the recent Cop27 summit in Egypt, the company announced it was filing for portfolio of public patents that would ensure its technology is available to others. It will work with other steel producers to maximise the positive impact of the innovation.

How will the industry access the opportunity developed by SSAB?

SSAB has launched a publicly accessible online knowledge-sharing platform, on which it is publishing information about the technology it has developed and its new approach to steel manufacturing. The company intends to add more information to this platform as innovation continues. It is also ready to make its specialists available to share their expertise with other steel manufacturers and the rest of the industry.

There is no official definition of “green steel”. But this technology is a game changer from an environmental perspective. Because it relies on hydrogen gas and fossil-free electricity, rather than carbon and coke, it produces steel that has almost no CO2 footprint. Only tiny emissions – such as those produced by the consumption of graphite electrodes in the electric arc furnace – remain and SSAB is working to make further improvements here, too.

Can steel made using the HYBRIT technology be described as ‘green steel’?

Using HYBRIT technology, the only by-product is water vapour. As a visual demonstration to the public that the steel industry can now move in the right direction, SSAB has bottled some of this water, calling it Pure Waste. Although the bottled water will not be sold to the public, the CTO of SSAB, Martin Pei, drank it during the recent UN Cop27 conference. In practice, the vapour will be captured during the production process to produce new hydrogen to be used in the next round of steel manufacturing.
What are the waste products from SSAB’s new steel production process?
Should purchasers be demanding fossil-free steel from manufacturers?
6
Everyone needs to play their part to combat climate change. By purchasing steel that is produced cleanly, companies will make their own contribution to building sustainable value chains in the global economy – and prove to stakeholders such as regulators, employees and customers that they take their own responsibilities seriously. Importantly, fossil-free steel is of the same high quality as existing steel products and can be used by customers in all industries.
This is how we can continue to support economic growth without compromising our climate change imperatives. The world knows it needs to move away from fossil fuels, but until now the focus has largely been on reducing emissions during usage – driving electric vehicles rather than those powered by internal combustion engines, for example. Fossil-free steel proves it is also possible to tackle climate change at the production phase. It will have a dramatic impact.
How will fossil-free steel help manufacturers, consumers and the environment?
