A storytelling platform about our offshore challenges
March 24th 2024
The crane replacement project for Cadeler's Wind Orca and Wind Osprey reflects our commitment to support our customers in staying competitive in the offshore wind industry. In a matter of months, we successfully upgraded two vessels with state-of-the-art 1600 mt GustoMSC cranes, priming them for next-generation wind turbine installation. This achievement was made possible through a collaborative effort involving GustoMSC, Cadeler, and Mammoet.

About the project
GustoMSC installed a high-capacity leg crane on Cadeler’s Wind Orca and Wind Osprey jack-up vessels, making these vessels ready to install next generation wind turbines. This aligns with the industry’s shift toward next-gen wind turbines of up to 20 MW in capacity, demanding enhanced lifting capabilities for installation and maintenance.
The new leg cranes have a 1600 metric tons lifting capacity at a 40-meter radius, with the main hook reaching 159 meters above the main deck. The cranes are fully electric driven, reducing the environmental footprint. They represent a substantial upgrade compared to the previously installed 1200 metric tons NOV cranes with a 31-meter radius.
Cadeler emphasizes the strategic importance of these crane replacement projects to solidify their position as a key supplier in the offshore wind sector. The replacement work on Wind Orca and Wind Osprey was carried out in Q4 2023/Q1 2024, with turnkey delivery in March 2024. These crane replacement projects reflect NOV’s commitment to support customers like Cadeler in staying competitive in the offshore wind industry.
Unique collaboration
The removal of the existing cranes and the installation of the new cranes took place at the Mammoet quayside, neighbours of GustoMSC. Making this a unique collaboration in Schiedam and a great spectacle as our engineers were able to witness it live from our very own office floor!
