An apex
predator has
no predators
of its own.
Dominating the complex drilling applications of Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa, Predator drill bit designs improve overall bottomhole assembly (BHA) and well performance just as apex predators maintain the health of their ecosystems. Across regions characterized by hard and abrasive formations, superior drilling efficiency plays a key role in downhole vibration mitigation.
It resides at the top of the food chain, fearlessly ruling its environment. ReedHycalog’s new Predator™ series drill bits do just that.
Our pride of technical experts fiercely analyzes and assesses each application, identifying not only the optimum Predator bit design but also complementing NOV technology, including the ReedHycalog™ dog leg (DL) reamer and M/D Totco™ SoftSpeed™ II stick/slip mitigator system.
Our class-leading cutter technology, including the ever-evolving grade and innovative geometries, allows for singular designs to prey on multiple formations over any given interval. This allows for more consistent performance, leading to longer and faster runs without sacrificing integrity or damage.
The Predator series is the most recent addition to our regional drill bit product lines, which includes Pursuit™ (US), Falcon™ (Middle East and North Africa), Fuego™ (Latin America), and Redline™ (Canada).

Fenja Campaign
The Challenge
The Melke reservoir formation in the Fenja field, Haltenbanken area of the Norwegian Sea, is a highly challenging drilling environment due to the hard calcite cemented stringers, loose quartz, and pebbles. This led to very short runs at a low rate of penetration (ROP) and half of the runs being terminated prematurely. A customer challenged ReedHycalog to increase run length and ROP for the Fenja development campaign.
The Solution
The Predator 8.5” TKC73 drill bit was selected after identifying the design as a top performer in similar applications across the globe. An ION+ ™ cutter grade was chosen to best address the dominant cutter failure modes seen on previous offset runs. In terms of cutter geometries, a 3D Chainsaw™ arrangement was implemented to provide optimal drilling efficiency and stability through the challenging lithology. Design improvements continued throughout the development campaign, including optimization of ION+ cutter grades and the addition of Struts™ HDI elements to enhance performance.
The Solution
• All runs surpassed the 10 meters per hour ROP
target set for the Fenja campaign.
• Drilled 868 meters at a speed of 19.5 meters per
hour on G-3 well, the longest run in the field
• Only 1 of 10 runs terminated early – none bit
related (BHA failure)
