BAR HARBOR ISLAND TRAIL
An Island Oasis Accessible Only During Low Tide
Nestled in Acadia National Park, one of the best unknown vacation spots in the U.S., the Bar Island Trail offers a unique and exciting hiking experience that allows you to explore the fleeting magic of the connection between Bar Harbor and Bar Island. During low tide, a sandbar emerges, connecting the town of Bar Harbor to Bar Island for about three hours. This temporary pathway provides an incredible opportunity to explore tide pools where you might discover treasures like snail eggs and charming seastars.
Once on the island, you can enjoy a 1.9-mile trail that winds through diverse landscapes, including dirt-covered forest floors, rocky ledges, and sandy stretches. The trail gradually ascends through the lush forest on an old road, guiding you to a junction. Opting for the right path unveils an abandoned home site with a mesmerizing view of Bar Harbor, while the left trail ascends to the island's highest point, offering another breathtaking panorama. Remember to plan your hike carefully, as the low tide schedule changes by approximately 50 minutes. I'm such a fan of unique trails, and The Bar Island Trail is just that!

Nestled in the Missouri mountains, you’ll find clear water, stunning vistas, and some of the state’s best fishing. Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Missouri – one of the most unique hidden gem cities in the U.S. – is fed by Table Rock Lake. There’s hardly a better place to spend the afternoon for those interested in fishing. Over half a million brown and rainbow trout are dropped yearly into the lake, creating a perfectly well-stocked fishing hole.
Of course, you don’t need to be an avid angler to enjoy all that the lake offers. Visitors enjoy boating and kayaking on the water and, for those who don’t mind the breathtakingly brisk water temperatures, a quick dip in the summer. Looking for an unforgettable way to view the water and mountains? We’d recommend a scenic cruise on the Landing Princess or the Landing Queen. After your time on the water, don’t forget to stop by the nearby Branson Landing, a must-experience destination for enjoying the area’s local shops and restaurants.

For those of us who have visited, you know how special Block Island truly is. With its natural beauty, the iconic and historic South East Lighthouse, and pristine beaches, it’s a paradise that’s a mere 13 miles off the Rhode Island coast. Surprisingly, one of the most incredible aspects of the island isn’t the beaches or even the lighthouse. The Mohegan Bluffs tower 200 feet over the coastline. Named after a 16th-century Native American battle, its dramatic beauty invokes a sense of awe and wonder for those who gaze upon it.
From the top of the bluffs, you’ll experience some of the most spectacular coastal views in the state. For those who can, do yourself a favor and climb down the staircase to the beach to take the views of the red clay cliffs from a different perspective. Back at the top, look at the commemorative plaque with information on Mohegan Bluffs and its history.

We have several famous islands in Michigan, but you'll find this charming little archipelago right along the Upper Peninsula, one of the best unknown places to visit in the U.S. In all, there are 36 islands in this chain - some are inhabited, others are comprised mainly of untamed wilderness. Four are unnamed. The Les Chenaeux Islands have 12 miles of shoreline right along Lake Huron, and it's no wonder this is a popular spot for boating and kayaking. The islands' geography has resulted in several bays and inland lakes perfect for those seeking outdoor adventure.
Many who visit the islands stay on the mainland at nearby Hessel. This small town is charming and features boutique shops, restaurants, and lodging. In the summer, it hosts the Les Cheneaux Islands Antique Boat Show & Festival of the Arts. The festival brings around 10,000 visitors to the area and is the largest antique wooden boat show in the entire world.

As one of the most unique hidden gems in South Florida, the Venetian Pool is a breathtaking oasis and an architectural wonder. Engulfed in tropical beauty, grottos, and waterfalls, this spring-fed pool is a one-of-a-kind escape worthy of a visit. Swim in cool, crisp waters underneath the grottos, or sit on the sandy shore and soak up beautiful Florida sunshine. For almost 100 years, this oasis has been loved by locals and visitors alike, and as the largest freshwater pool in the world, it attracts thousands of guests every year.
For a small fee, you can spend the day basking in the exotic features of this turquoise lagoon. Also, we recommend that you pack a picnic or enjoy lunch at the onsite cafe. As one of the best hidden paradises in the U.S., we can guarantee that you’ll believe you’ve escaped Florida to a Mediterranean land across the seas. Not only is this swimming pool a paradise on earth, but it also holds some historical significance. It is built inside a limestone quarry and is the only swimming pool listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Between the crisp spring waters and the stunning architecture, this Venetian paradise is genuinely one of the South’s greatest treasures.

Set within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest of Northern Washington, Mount Baker Hot Springs is an unknown place to visit in the U.S., offering tranquility, relaxation, and rejuvenation. These two all-natural geothermal pools are set amidst the trees and are accessible by a short, easy trail measuring just over a quarter of a mile. Though easy to access on foot, getting to the trailhead can be challenging in the winter, and four-wheel drive is recommended.
The waters run from warm to scalding hot, so you’ll want to test the temperature before taking the plunge. The hot springs are lined with logs and stones, creating a convenient area for sitting. Once in the pools, you’ll enjoy the healing benefits of geothermal springs and the stunning natural beauty surrounding you: a canopy of evergreen trees. Both pools together can accommodate about a dozen visitors. Whether visiting in the summer or the heart of winter, you’ll be completely entranced by this outdoor soaking experience.

Envision pristine glaciers adorning towering peaks, whales breaching just off the coast, dolphins playing in the distance, and bald eagles soaring gracefully overhead. The Alaskan borough known as Sitka is nestled on the western fringes of Baranof Island and the southern periphery of Chichagof Island. One of our favorite hidden gem cities in the USA, this idyllic village offers true seclusion and removal from the chaos of daily life as you immerse yourself in some of the most pristine landscapes in the world.
A journey to the Alaskan town of Sitka comes chock-full of adventure unlike any you’ve experienced. The town is only accessible by plane or boat, but we highly recommend traveling by air on your first visit to soak in the allure of the rugged mountainous terrain. Then, we recommend taking a wildlife boat exhibition to view the majestic whales, sea lions, sea otters, and other marine life and waterfowl in the area. Be sure to explore the more than 50 miles of hiking trails and enjoy the ATV tours, flight tours, ample fishing opportunities, and more.

Let’s cruise the 54-mile Talimena National Scenic Byway that meanders through the Ouachita National Forest between east Oklahoma and west Arkansas. Offering a picturesque drive with welcoming nature scenes of towering evergreens, sweeping mountain vistas, and serene lakes and flowing streams, this scenic byway belongs on your list. While you can quickly complete the winding drive in just over an hour, we recommend taking the extra time to bask in all its glory. Along the way, you’ll find historical sites and multiple overlooks where you can delight in the enchanting splendor of the natural landscapes. Each season brings beauty: springtime blooming pretty little wildflowers, summer offering lush greenery, and winter becoming an enchanting wonderland. But during the fall, the byway explodes with vibrant hues of glowing reds and oranges. The best times to cruise the winding byway are late October and November, so plan accordingly. If you’re searching for an exhilarating, delightful, and awe-inspiring adventure, plan a cruise on the Talimena National Scenic Byway. It’s truly a sight to behold.

Hidden beautiful places in the U.S. are found right here in West Virginia. Explore Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, founded in 1901 by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. Once a bustling company town for loggers, Cass flourished with an 11-mile heritage railroad, initially transporting lumber and later reaching Bald Knob, West Virginia's third-highest peak. The timber industry's decline in 1960 led to Cass becoming a state park in 1961. Under the Durbin Greenbrier Valley Railroad's management, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park maintains its historical charm, featuring scenic train rides for an authentic journey into the past. Take a ride for stunning views of Bald Knob, with either a 4.5-hour round-trip or a two-hour excursion to Whittaker Station, departing from historic downtown.
Other key attractions include The Company Store, housing a gift shop, and Shays Restaurant, while the artisans' co-op, Cass Historical Theater, and Historical Museum provide immersive experiences. From charming Company Houses for lodging to diverse activities like biking, fishing, geocaching, and hiking, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park invites visitors to relish its rich history and picturesque landscapes. We love a state park with a riveting past, don't you?

West Texas welcomes you to play in its sandbox, and we assure you it’s the coolest one in the neighborhood. At Monahans Sandhills State Park, you can explore over 3,840 acres of pure quartz sand that forms dunes up to 70 feet high. Rent a sand surfing disc at the Dunagan Visitor Center and join the other kids on the dunes. There are no marked trails so that you can cut your path – much like the wind around here.
Daily park hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with visitor center hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but we recommend you reserve one of the 26 campsites to see the sights of the sandhills outside of regular hours. While the stargazing is lovely, the sunrises steal the show. The landscape does a dazzling dance before your eyes as light extends across the wind-sculpted dunes, illuminating their sharp peaks and delicate ripples. If you want to emulate a Saharan horseback adventure, equestrians have a dedicated 800 acres, three campsites, and trailer parking.

Quietly tucked away in Northeast Arizona, Canyon de Chelly is a hidden travel gem in the U.S., a stark and otherworldly slice of the state that rises unexpectedly out of the otherwise barren desert landscape. In the heart of these rugged canyonlands, the sun-cracked valley floor sweeps in every direction while towering, crimson-red walls and cliffs intermingle with lush cottonwood trees, historic pueblo dwellings, and magnificent ancient river and wind-carved spectacles. Tourist crowds may overlook the sheer 700-foot walls that labyrinth through this rugged national monument, but are undeniably spectacular.
In addition to awe-inspiring sights, Canyon de Chelly reveals layers of history in its striated cliffs. Ancient petroglyphs and pictographs, etched and painted by Ancestral Puebloans and Navajo artists, decorate the canyon walls. Spider Rock, an iconic set of soaring sandstone spires, is a testament to the power of nature's sculpting hand and holds sacred significance to the Navajo, who still farm and occupy this landscape today. Visitors can take guided tours of this remote canyon to experience the magnificent formations and trails up close or take a scenic drive along the canyon rim.

When we think of Oregon, we often think of lush old-growth forests and rugged coastlines. However, an otherworldly and uncommon beauty is found in the Alvord Desert, a vast, 84-square-mile expanse of cracked earth with the majestic Steens Mountain framing the stunning views, a short distance from Highway 78. An unexpected, hidden, beautiful place in the USA, some come to play on this mesmerizing surface with three-wheeled land-sailing vehicles, and others come to enjoy the remote solitude and serenity.
At night, the sky comes alive with billions of stars with no light to dilute it, except perhaps your campfire. It’s like being on a faraway planet, all by yourself. Between the day and the night are the most gorgeous sunrises and sunsets bursting with a palette of orange and purple hues. We would like nothing more than to pitch a tent and soak in the stars, play some music to the night, and enjoy the stillness of this breathtaking land in the southeastern corner of Oregon. The Alvord Hot Springs & Bath House sits at the edge of the desert, ready to let you soak in bliss.

As North Dakota’s only national park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers a 70,446-acre outdoor playground for adventure. Despite all that it offers, the park only sees around 600,000 visitors yearly; it is truly one of the best unknown places to visit in the U.S.
Divided into three distinct areas known as units, you can choose which section of the park you want to visit depending on what you want to see and explore. The Elkhorn Ranch Unit is where Theodore Roosevelt called home after the deaths of both his wife and mother. What remains of the former president’s ranch is the cabin’s foundation, made of stone. This remote park unit is home to badlands, cottonwoods, and hiking trails. The North and South Units of the park are where you’ll find visitor centers, miles of scenic roadways for a lovely drive, wildlife viewing, nature programs led by rangers, and so much more. For those interested in seeing petrified wood, you’ll discover the third-largest petrified forest in the U.S. in the South Unit.

Called “the oldest weekly professional rodeo in the US,” Cowtown Rodeo runs from late May through September each year. Since 1929, Summer Saturday nights in southwest New Jersey have brought swirling dust, thundering hooves, starched denim, and gleaming belt buckles, and that year marked the beginning of the Cowtown Rodeo, which a father-son duo launched the annual rodeo in conjunction with the county fair. It now makes its home in Pilesgrove with a 4,000-seat arena.
In the late 50s and 60s, rodeo fans across the country could tune into the show on television. Today, the fifth generation of the founding Harris family keeps the tradition alive, along with its fans. To see what they call the “best show on dirt,” arrive early for tailgating (free parking!). Gates open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Over about two hours, you’ll hold your breath and try not to cover your eyes amid daring feats in bull riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, and barrel racing.

If you’re searching for hidden beautiful places in the U.S., look no further. Step into a world where words have a deeper meaning, especially with those used to describe them. The Amana Colonies take their collective name from a mountain referenced in the Bible’s Song of Solomon, with the word amana meaning “to remain true” or “constant.” In alignment with that, honoring history is a distinct value for these seven villages. German immigrants seeking religious freedom in the U.S. established these places as communal colonies in the mid-1800s. They include Amana, East Amana, High Amana, Middle Amana, South Amana, West Amana, and Homestead.
Today, they are known for their hospitality, welcoming visitors to shop, dine, and stay. You’ll find locally-made gourmet foods, crafts, wines, and brews. The German word for this is gemütlichkeit. While many say there is no English counterpart, all descriptions point to “harmony.” Trying to pronounce it? Gim-MOOT-lish-kite will get you close. But don’t worry – no one expects you to say it! You will know it when you feel it.

What may look like a pile of rocks in western Montana is a hidden gem that sings to you. That’s right, Montana is home to a large pile of musical stones in the most unusual way. Approximately 20 miles east of Butte, you’ll find the Ringing Rocks, a natural wonder many locals don’t even know exists. Easily one of the most unique hidden gems to visit in the U.S. Grab a hammer (available on-site) and tap on the rocks. You won’t believe the sounds that emerge — it’s quite a melodic tune.
You’ll need to spend some time driving on a dirt road to reach Ringing Rocks, but the journey is worth it. Plan to spend the day tapping the rocks with hammers and matching each tune. Each stone is unique in its sound, and believe us, you’ll want to hit each rock. If a rock is removed from the pile, the sound disappears. These rocks are in direct sun, so it’s best to come prepared with sunscreen and layers. Don’t forget climbing shoes because the pile of ringing rocks is significant, and you may find yourself climbing to the top – you won’t want to miss a single note!
