Get your fill of both land and sea on this chain of islands, rocks, and pinnacles on the Washington coast. Take an early ferry from Anacortes to Orcas for a full day. Start by hiking a 6.7-mile loop to the top of Mount Constitution (the island’s highest point). Refuel on artisan, wood-fired pizzas at Hogstone, then head to West Beach for a two-hour guided sea kayak tour with Outer Island Excursions. Finish at The Barnacle, a cozy watering hole with creative cocktails and small plates. Extend your stay at the magical enclave that is The Doe Bay Resort and Retreat, with soaking tubs, a sauna, spa, yoga studio, and an organic cafe spread across 38 waterfront acres (pick from cabins, yurts, or a pitched tent at the campground). Cap off your trip with a wildlife boat tour to spot orcas, whales, seals, herons, and bald eagles.
Put your cast iron skillet to work over low flame that provides medium-high heat.
1. Cube steak, season with salt and pepper, and brown it with a little oil. Add half a cup of Cutty Sark. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until the liquor reduces, and set the beef aside.
2. Saute chopped onions and red peppers in some added oil.
2. Add diced tomatoes, kidney beans, chicken broth, plus spices (chili powder, cumin, sugar, tomato paste, garlic powder, cayenne, salt, pepper).
3. Pour in another half cup of Cutty Sark, add the steak, and move to lower heat.
4. Simmer for as long as an hour (play a game while you wait) and add water if things are starting to look too dry.
5. Garnish with shredded cheese, sour cream, sliced green onions, and avocado.

The Launch
As the BBC broadcasts the record-breaking ship’s entrance to Greenwich for years of restoration work, prohibition ends in the U.S., shooting up sales of Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky as it grows to become the top-selling Scotch Whisky in the U.S. (and first to sell over 1M cases) by 1961.

Whiskey on the Rise
Enjoyed by everyone from gentry to gangsters on the big screen, Hollywood keeps casting Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky in a number of classics, including “Raging Bull” (1980), “Goodfellas” (1990), “The Associate” (1996), “The Sopranos” (1999), and “Mad Men” (2007).

Cutty Sark Goes Classic
In the Best of the Best tasting, Cutty Sark 25 is the highest-scoring whisky overall, described as “a complex masterpiece” and “a golden wonder.” The offerings expand as Cutty Sark unveils its Prohibition Edition Whisky in 2013 and a bold 12 YO expression in 2022 straight from Scotland.

Cutty Sark Adventurer
Sage Grey
As the manager for Cutty Sark’s Spirit of Adventure tour, Sage Grey wears a lot of hats as he travels the country hosting events and activating samplings: cameraman, audio tech, editor, bartender, event planner, roadie, the list goes on. Most importantly, it’s his job to represent a legacy brand that’s celebrating 100 years of adventures. That means his work is outdoor adventure. And as a born explorer ready to climb, hike, dive, snowboard or motorcycle wherever the road goes, Sage takes that work seriously.
Currently 20,000 miles into the tour, the southwest Colorado native has taken local bartenders skydiving in Key West, landing next to a pod of dolphins. He’s rocked SXSW and explored the Everglades, going from hiking the Rockies to surfing in Southern California. Between events, he canoed into a starlit, empty lagoon where he noticed his paddle glittering in the water. “I trailed my fingers through the glass surface and experienced the magic of bioluminescence for the first time,” he recalls. “It was one of the most phenomenal things I’ve ever experienced.”

Everglades
From Miami, head two hours south to Flamingo. Grab your canoe or kayak of choice from the marina and launch into Everglades National Park. Its 1.5 million acres are best explored by water, where its main attractions abound: mangrove tunnels, marshes, bays, rivers, manatees, alligators and crocs. There are a number of backcountry paddling routes and rangers can help map one out based on your experience and comfort level, but consider it mandatory to overnight on a chickee hut. (Target the Shark Point Chickee Hut for its expansive views and a prime location for both sunrises and sunsets.) These over-water platforms can hold a tent and are indisputably the ideal spot for watching the sun go down (and come back up again). Reserve yours three months ahead of time online, or grab one on a first-come, first-served basis upon arrival. The best part about paddling in your camp gear? There’s always room (especially in a canoe) for overnight luxuries like a cooler stocked with your favorite food and a dry bag for drinks (a little Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky, anyone?).

Michigan
Michigan’s 4,300-square-mile Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is the place to see well-preserved shipwrecks. How’d they get there? Unpredictable weather and rocky shoals made it a treacherous place to pass through the Great Lakes, claiming over 100 ships like the wooden steam barge Monohansett, which sank in 1907 just off Thunder Bay Island. The easy access and shallow waters (just 18 feet) regularly draw snorkelers and swimmers to see the ship’s boiler and steep propeller. If you don’t want to dive deep, explore the shallow shipwrecks, lighthouses, and islands via standup paddleboard, canoe, kayak, or even glass-bottom boat tours—the lake’s clear, blue water provides high enough visibility to see the shipwreck action from the surface. Road-trip lovers can’t miss the 200-mile U.S.-23 Heritage Route, which hugs the coast of Lake Huron with easy stops at beaches, parks, and worthy dining stops.

Is there anything better than a post-surf beach bonfire? First, check local regulations to make sure they’re allowed. If so, there’s likely an existing pit surrounded by a metal or concrete fire ring. If not, make one. Send your pals out to collect driftwood and add some kindling. Newspaper, junk mail, or small sticks all work well. Go with a strong structure to hold up to the elements like the “log cabin” style: Place two opposing logs down, then place two logs on top and parallel to those logs and keep going. Add your kindling and light it up. (Pro tip: Skip the s’mores and whip out a bottle of Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky and ginger ale to mix everyone up a fireside beverage).

Load Your Backpack
To boost your comfort and help maintain your center of gravity, pack heavy items close to your back. Then load up based on when you might need certain items: sleeping bag, tent, plus flask of Cutty Sark at the bottom (when you’re done for the day); extra layers nested into the spaces formed by rigid items like cooking gear; water at the top, right behind your shoulder blades (keep it from sloshing by stuffing your puffy jacket around it). In the brain, put all your small essentials: multi-tool, sunscreen, a granola bar, cell phone, satellite messaging device, sunglasses. Somewhere in the middle, sneak in a flask of Cutty Sark and surprise your friends at the campfire.

Put your cast iron skillet to work over low flame that provides medium-high heat. This recipe serves six and pairs well with a light, refreshing and low-fuss cocktail (like a Cutty Sark Highball) that complements the rich chili flavors.

Want the grand tour of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve? Drive the scenic loop around its 70,000 acres, stopping at the best spots for impromptu adventure. Link a string of the West’s lesser known and most intriguing soaking destinations, from natural pools to developed resorts, with a memorable, 345-mile New Mexico road trip. Begin with a 10-minute jaunt into the mountains outside of Santa Fe to Ten Thousand Waves, a tranquil resort in the woods that resembles a Japanese mountain onsen. Take a morning hike up Picacho Peak for sweeping views of the city (3.8 miles roundtrip). Next, head to the riverside Jemez Hot Springs, just outside the Valles Caldera National Preserve, and add on a 1.5-mile hike (round trip) to the natural San Antonio Hot Springs. Next, Ojo Caliente’s peaceful resort offers different mineral pools for relaxing under multi-colored sandstone cliffs. Finish the soothing tour in Las Vegas (New Mexico!) with the hot-spring pools once part of the Montezuma Hotel, now open to the public.

Mark your bucket list with Gold Bluffs Beach, a seaside camping destination nestled between the thundering waves of the Pacific Ocean and towering coastal redwoods. Drive a one-lane dirt road to access this Northern California gem located about 300 miles north of San Francisco (an hour’s drive either north of Eureka or south of Crescent City, both great towns for provisions). Explore 75 miles of hiking trails and a 19-mile bike trail, but don’t miss Fern Canyon. It’s a stunning 1-mile lollipop loop through lush, fern-covered canyon walls (prepare to get your feet wet). Outside of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which used this awe-inspiring canyon as a backdrop, you’ve never seen anything like it. Look out for the herd of Roosevelt elk that often graze this area. Prepare for the foggy, coastal weather by bringing warm layers, rain protection, dry firewood, plus a bottle of Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky for a fireside nightcap.

When it comes to setting up your campsite, small tweaks go a long way in taking your scene from just OK to the envy of all the other campers. People will hang out by the fire longer if there’s a comfortable place to sit, so bring a nice camp chair (or even a camp loveseat) and a puffy camping blanket. Solar-powered lights and lanterns keep the party going after the sun sets, boosting vibes and adding crucial ambience. Factor in extras to ensure a fun evening with friends, like a Bluetooth speaker, camp table, and a simple game to play (try Farkle, all you need are six dice). Don’t skimp on the basics either: you’ll want a well-planned camp meal and a well-packed cooler full of the best mixers for camp cocktails (think: soda, lemon, and simple syrup for the most options with Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky).

Gourmet Picnic
Struggling to come up with a fun summer activity to do with your friends? Pick a trail (or local park), invite a few friends, and surprise them with a charcuterie party on top of your favorite summit. Grab a larger backpack and stuff it with the biggest cutting/serving board that fits, plus a few small knives. Then, pack lightweight containers full of sliced meats, a few types of cheese, olives, crackers and/or a baguette, dried fruits, a dip or two, and some strawberries or fresh figs for good measure. Finally, throw in a flask of Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky for making a quick and delicious batch of Cutty and Gingers. Sure, the packed picnic load might run a little heavy (at least on the hike up), but the looks on your friends’ faces will make it all worth it. Pro tip: Summit charcuterie and cocktails are best enjoyed with a sunset.

Outdoor Goal
Goals can be motivating forces. Take action (even small steps) to kickstart your drive toward a new objective outdoors. Try this one: Set the goal, and an alarm, to catch the sunrise every morning for a week. Add bonus points if you watch it set, too (sunsets going down best with a Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky cocktail, of course). The next week, add a microadventure outside of work hours. Seize the time between 5 p.m., and 9 a.m., to squeeze in a weekday overnight trip to a new state park, sleeping under the stars close to home. Want to level up your goal? Go for a Fastest Known Time (FKT) on a given trail or route. You don’t need to be an elite athlete. Just check the FKT database, find one in your area (there’s often some low-hanging fruit), and give it a go. Better yet, if your favorite trail isn’t on the list, grab your GPS watch, go claim it, and earn your Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky.

It’s not easy to capture this summer’s U.S.A. Cutty Sark Tour. It’s been on the move, crisscrossing the country from coast to coast while making event stops highlighted by adventures that cover land and sea, from surf days to bike expos. Beyond the activities, bonfires, games, live music and (of course) crafted Cutty Sark Blended Scotch Whisky cocktails, connecting with the "Spirit of Adventure" crew always yields a few surprises.
Fortunately, Ian Nicklaus was ready to share his take on the tour. The Breckenridge, Colorado-based photographer knows adventure well. Though he prefers accessing remote areas in his truck to “set up camp, cook, fly fish, and enjoy peace,” he knows the best memories are in the company of others, looking back on a day spent floating the Colorado River with friends: “We swam and cliff jumped, ate good food, and made even better memories,” he says. Favorite cocktail? “I keep it simple with an old fashioned.”
