Big Bend Country
Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains national parks provide unparalleled opportunities for exploration. In Big Bend, hike the iconic Chisos Mountains, with views of the Rio Grande. Or summit the highest mountain in Texas—Guadalupe Peak, which tops out at 8,751 feet.
Hill Country
Lost Maples State Park is a hidden gem nestled in the Texas Hill Country. With rolling terrain, crystal-clear streams, and, most notably, a spectacular display of vibrant fall foliage, every trail offers breathtaking scenery that changes with the seasons.
Panhandle Plains
Venture into the Texas Panhandle, to explore Palo Duro Canyon, where you'll encounter a striking contrast of dramatic red-rock formations and expansive canyon views. the Texas Gulf Coast from November to March. Standing nearly five feet tall, the whooping crane is the tallest bird species
on the continent.
Roseate Spoonbill
With their distinctive pink plumage, roseate spoonbills are
a favorite among birders. These migratory birds congregate in
the Texas Gulf Coast from March to October and overwinter farther south in Central and South America.
Tricolored Heron
The tricolored heron is distinguished by its gray, ruby, and white feathers. Lucky birders may witness the species’ unique hunting style. As they wade in the coastal marshes, the birds spread their wings to shade the water from the sun and more easily spot their prey.
Reddish Egret
A permanent resident of the Gulf Coast, the striking reddish egret nests in the brush along the coast and wades in brackish water to feed. With under 2,000 nesting pairs—mostly found in Texas—these birds are classified as a threatened species.
The Flavors of Texas
Texas cuisine reflects the state's rich cultural tapestry, with a blend of Native American, Mexican, and European influences
Texas Chili
A quintessential Texan dish and the official dish of Texas, chili embodies the state's bold flavors. Often made with chunks of beef, chili peppers, and a medley of spices, Texas chili is hearty and satisfying. Locals take pride in the "no-bean" philosophy, emphasizing the robust taste of the meat and spices.
Texas Barbecue
Barbecue is practically a
religion in Texas, especially in the central part of the state. Pitmasters have perfected the art of slow-cooked, smoky meats. Brisket, ribs, and sausages take center stage, cooked low and slow to achieve a mouthwatering tenderness that Texas barbecue is famous for.
Gulf Coast Seafood
The Gulf Coast's bounty influences Texan cuisine with fresh and flavorful seafood. Shrimp, oysters, and Gulf fish are staples, prepared in various styles, from grilled and blackened to fried. Head to coastal cities like Galveston and Corpus Christi, where seafood-centric dishes are abundant and the catch of the day is always on the menu.
Tex-Mex
What do you get when you blend Texan and Mexican flavors? Tex-Mex, of course! The Tex-Mex scene is a vibrant mosaic of flavors, bringing together the best of both worlds. Try Tex-Mex staples like enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas, which often feature sizzling meats, melted cheese, and spicy salsas.
