Lindsey Vonn, the winningest female ski racer of all time, is obviously a fierce competitor. But she’s used to testing her mettle on a team of one—on skis. So when she decided to enter Land Rover’s TReK off-roading challenge this fall, joined by ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson and adventure journalist Alyssa Roenigk, things were bound to get interesting. We rode along as Vonn and her crew put a customized Defender through its paces on the grounds of the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.

After an evening spent familiarizing themselves with the vehicle and course (and sleeping in a tent at the basecamp for the event), each team competed in an eight-hour trial consisting of special tasks that included off-road driving, vehicle recovery techniques, basic orienteering, and strategic thinking. Teams were awarded points for their proficiency completing the tasks, and the team with the most points at the end of the day won the competition.
The Location:
This year’s competition was held in Asheville, North Carolina, at the fabled Biltmore Estate. Over the course of the event, the teams navigated the 8,000-acre estate’s extensive network of backroads, covering a wide range of terrain including mud and ruts, water crossings, and rock crawls.
The Vehicle:
This year, teams will drive the new 2022 Defender 110 SE P300, equipped with 18” Steel Wheels, Off-Road Pack, Towing Pack, and a range of accessories, including a a Remote Control Electric Winch and an Expedition Roof Rack that allowed them to carry a high-lift jack, two TRED Pro Recovery boards, and other vital tools.
The Teams:
Over the course of several weeks in September, this year’s competition pitted 70 three-person teams—each representing the various sales regions for Land Rover across the U.S. Lindsey and crew competed in the first wave of competition, going up against 5 other teams made up of journalists from the U.S. and Canada. The winning team from each wave of competition returned to Asheville in October for the TReK 2021 Finals, where the overall winner of the competition was crowned.
The History:
Originally established in 1996 and modeled after the legendary Camel Trophy, the TReK competition was designed to challenge and educate Land Rover Retailer employees from the U.S. and Canada.

Defender Knowledge: To succeed, Vonn and team needed to get the most out of their extremely capable rig. From how to change between high and low range to where to find the vehicle’s jacking points, Team Rocky Road had to know the Defender inside and out.
Off-Road Driving: Knowing which Terrain Response mode to utilize on an off-camber, slippery descent is one thing. Actually clearing the terrain feature is another entirely. Organizers designed the TRĕK course to see just how skilled each team’s driver was.
Orienteering and GPS: Navigation—both analog and digital—was the name of the game at the TRĕK competition. Tasks were designed to test teams’ mastery of old-fashioned orienteering and modern GPS navigation skills.
Vehicle Recovery: Vehicles don’t get much more capable than the Defender, but TRĕK was designed to push teams to the very edge—and in some cases, over it. From utilizing Hi-Lift Jacks to the Defender’s stock winch system, teams executed all manner of recovery tactics during the course of the event.
