The L.A. Sparks win their first WNBA Championship in the STAPLES Center. In addition to the Sparks, the venue is home to the Lakers and the Kings. Until the Clippers moved to a new arena in 2024, this was the only arena in the NBA to be shared by two teams.
The Kings win their first Stanley Cup in team history. They would go on to win another Stanley Cup in 2014, also at home. It takes a crew of 50 people two-and-a-half hours to transition the arena from a basketball court to an ice rink.
The attendance record at the venue was set when a crowd
of 20,820 people gathered to watch the fight between WBA Welterweight Champion Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley.
