1. Prefilter
Prefiltration removes things like dirt and sediment. Larger particulate matter has the potential to clog or prematurely exhaust the filter(s) which follow it. Additionally, without the presence of a prefilter the effectiveness of larger filtration units can be significantly reduced with the presence of particulate matter.
2. Softener
A water softener uses a process called ion exchange. It has a tank filled with resin beads that attract the hard water minerals like a magnet. As water flows through, the minerals get trapped on the beads, and sodium ions (from salt) are released into the water instead. This "softens" the water, making it much easier to deal with.
3. Post Filter
Some whole home filtration systems have a final filtration stage containing carbon. This is a final step that can improve the taste and odor. Sometimes this is done with an undersink filtration system or pitcher. Undersink systems can also have additional steps for other contaminant reduction before drinking or cooking.
