Medical Insurance Comparison
Sovereign
Great service, claims are usually processed very quickly. A referral letter is usually sufficient to get the claim accepted.
In most cases prior-approvals can be processed urgently if you have an appointment or procedure in the next few days. However, we cannot guarantee that urgent prior-approvals will be processed in time and recommend that you get in touch to arrange your prior-approval as soon as you can.
Partners Life
Good service, can be a little slow with processing. You need a very clear referral letter with a detailed history of the condition; otherwise you will need
your doctor to complete the medical section of your claim form.
- Ensure Question 5 is ticked so that we can assist
with your claim.
- A $250 excess is payable on all specialists and
tests claims (payable per person, per year).
AIA
Great service, claims are usually processed very quickly. A referral letter is usually sufficient to get the claim accepted.
nib
The medical report on your claim form must be completed by your doctor, even if you have a
referral letter. Please also ensure that section 3.2
is completed if you would like us to help you with
your claim).
Accuro
If your policy is less than five years old a form will need to be completed by your doctor, even if you have a referral letter.
Southern Cross
Southern Cross prefer to deal directly with the
policy owner and can do pre-approvals on the
phone or online.

Partners Life ($300,000 per policy year)
Partners Life recognises that purchasing private medical insurance should allow the life assured to access the most effective treatment available, irrespective of whether that treatment qualifies for a government (or quasi-government) subsidy, such as PHARMAC funding.
As a result, Private Medical Cover reimburses the costs of all drugs registered by Medsafe for use in New Zealand where:
- The treatment is prescribed by a Specialist as being
the appropriate Medical Treatment for the condition;
and
- The treatment(s) and/or condition(s) are covered
elsewhere in this Protection Benefit Sheet; and
- The drug’s cost is covered under the Surgical
Benefit, Non-Surgical Benefit or Serious Illness
Benefit; and
- The drug is being prescribed within the guidelines
set by Medsafe. Partners Life will cover the costs of
these drugs over and above any government
(or quasigovernment) subsidy.
All costs under this Non-PHARMAC Subsidised Drugs Benefit are included within the benefit maximums that apply to the Surgical, Non-Surgical or Serious Illness Benefits, whichever is applicable for the required treatment.
AIA ($500,000 per policy year)
Covers the Usual, Customary and Reasonable expenses incurred for accessing the most effective treatment available, irrespective of whether that treatment qualifies for PHARMAC funding.
We will reimburse the costs of all medicines registered by Medsafe, provided they are used according to Medsafe indications for use in New Zealand (subject to our prior approval) and meeting our criteria where:
- The treatment has been recommended by a
Registered Medical Specialist as the appropriate
medical treatment for the condition; and
- The cost of the medicine is covered under the
Hospital Surgical Benefit (Non Cancer); and
- The medicine is being prescribed within the
guidelines set by Medsafe.
All costs under this Non-PHARMAC Subsidised Drugs Benefit are included within the benefit maximums that apply to the Hospital Surgical Benefit (Non Cancer).
