AI: A Revolution in Motion
SHARE
AI is one of the most significant secular, long-term growth themes in the markets today. Investors have bid up many companies—and entire sectors—in anticipation of the impact AI capabilities could have on returns. But how large a role is AI already playing in these companies and sectors, and how much of a role might AI play in the future?*
Mobility is focused on electric vehicles. In the future, we expect that AI-driven applications will ultimately become very important to the function of vehicles, especially with self driving capabilities. The complexity of operating the vehicle in real world situations will require AI-driven software to function effectively. However, this is just one potential application of AI. Electric vehicles can be considered smart phones on wheels. Thus, a vehicle’s software may ultimately be able to plan and adjust trips, coordinate schedules, negotiate and pay insurance contracts, schedule and perform maintenance, and offer entertainment to passengers.

Direct to consumer methods have empowered many businesses, giving them real-time insight into customer preferences and offering them tools to develop products and marketing that bypass intermediaries. The AI can create a marketing plan, design ads, and monitor the success of the campaign, including making adjustments to make it more effective. AI’s approach is also cheaper and more effective, democratizing access to these methods for small and medium sized businesses.

*For illustrative purposes only. The charts in this infographic represent Jennison’s estimates of the percentage of work supported by generative AI today (“Current State”) versus the future (“Future State”). Note, we believe the greater role played by generative AI in the future will enable higher impact human input, not less human input.

HUMANITY
Digital assistants are one of the most significant potential applications of AI. Currently, AI is already powering more and more search engines and voice interaction software on smartphones. However, these applications are still relatively simple. Powered by AI, personal assistants may be capable of proactive actions that integrate data and a range of applications. In the workplace, AI assistants may access tools and have plugins and other integrations that allow them to be more autonomous and complete tasks on an individual’s behalf—from drafting memos, to scheduling meetings, to drafting and sending emails.

The benefits AI can bring to healthcare are extraordinary. AI can analyze the massive troves of proprietary data far more quickly and effectively than humans, discerning trends and patterns that can yield insights in diagnosis, treatments, and methods. Specifically, AI can play a critical role in drug discovery and development, and it can be the basis of customized treatment of individuals. AI may become common in diagnosis, and early models have already shown proficiency that rivals, and sometimes, exceeds, that of humans. AI may also be able to assist in surgeries—potentially performing the operations itself.

Entertainment is already integrating AI into a range of tasks—from developing scripts to creating special effects. Many of these tasks are mundane and represent costs savings that, cumulatively, can have a significant impact. These include dubbing dialogue and writing subtitles, special effects editing, and marketing campaigns (note, a major portion of blockbuster movie budgets is typically allocated to marketing). With its ability to draft text, mimic speech, and generate moving images, AI may be able to create original programming at a fraction of the price needed for current productions.

In manufacturing, AI tools can make it easier, and more intuitive, to access and exploit proprietary data. This can allow manufacturers, who are typically not expert in technology or AI modeling, to spot inefficiencies and implement solutions. These can include identifying unnecessary processes, eliminating waste, and monitoring maintenance and upgrades on a real-time basis. AI can also improve quality inspections and propose cost savings. Finally, AI can take over a manufacturing process, building its own process, installing its own equipment, and making improvements.
