Judisa Joins in the Effort to Fight Hunger
As a community nutrition worker, she’s gained extensive knowledge and skills
for the past two years.
Of the 27 community nutrition specialists working with Plan International in South Sudan, Judisa is the only woman. Every day, she walks three hours to visit a Plan International-supported nutrition centre where mothers and their children receive food, health testing and nutrition information. Many of the women she speaks with say this is the worst period of hunger they can remember. The crisis has been exacerbated due to the lasting effects of COVID-19, ongoing conflict and the severest drought in 40 years.
“Children go hungry or eat less. It hurts me to see their faces,” she says. When diseases hinder women’s access to already-limited sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and health services, it’s hard to have a nutritious diet – especially for girls, who aren’t as valued in their families and communities.
Community health volunteers, like Ngachower, refer children and pregnant and breastfeeding women for monitoring
to Judisa in the health centre. One malnourished two-year-old girl was started on a nutrient-rich diet to improve her health, and her family was given water purification tablets. “This case had a happy ending, but many children need our help,” says Ngachower.
Judisa says she’s proud to help treat children in her community
and provide women with life-saving knowledge.

Around 60% of the population in South Sudan are predicted to face acute food shortages this year, including 1.4 million children under the age of five.
As families endure ongoing strain, the long-term effects of this hunger crisis will leave children, especially girls, at further risk of harmful practices
like early and forced marriage and child labour.

About Us
Thank Goodness!
Lise, a former health care worker, has never stopped caring.
“If I were younger, I would be working somewhere overseas,”says Lise Bazoian, a retired nurse in Hamilton, Ont.
We first shared Lise’s story in 2013, and her caring nature hasn’t changed.
Lise has seen how far gender equality has come in her lifetime, especially for women in the health sector. “When I went into nursing, there were only two women doctors in training," she says, adding that it’s still hard for a woman to get ahead in life in many of the regions where we work. “She has to work twice as hard for opportunities,” notes Lise.
That’s why Lise joined our Equality Collective, a group of powerful women who are advocating for meaningful change for girls and women so they can achieve their dreams. “Education is the main way young women will escape poverty,” she says. “I hope for a better life for the younger generation.”
The world has faced immense hardship during the past 10 years, yet Lise remains optimistic about the future.
Lise won’t stop fighting for girls’ rights until we are all equal. Her persevering positivity will live on thanks to the Plan International Canada gift she is leaving in her will.
For more than two decades, Lise has helped women and children access resources like clean water through her
Child Sponsorship. She’s helped keep children safe throughout her career and through her support of our health project and emergency relief efforts.
“
My mother inspired my spirit for giving because she always believed that when you give
something, you get it back in many ways.”
“
Everyone should strive to be optimistic. There’s always more good you can do.”
“
It wasn’t a difficult decision. Life will go on, and I believe my gift will help it go on in a better way.”
