When did wine become such a vibe? Despite reports of declining wine sales and young people decamping for cocktails or abstaining entirely, if you step out in any sizable American city right now, it would appear that wine is thriving. At 6 p.m. in [insert city], folks are sidling up to the cool new modern wine bar to get their branded tavern glass filled with something fizzy, something Czech, something finished in a concrete egg. What is in that glass matters, of course, but to engage with wine today is as much about the wine itself as it is about the experience of drinking it. How much are you willing to spend? Where are you drinking it? What are you drinking it out of? Natural wine, for instance, has become as much an aesthetic as it is a movement rooted in specific principles of winemaking and growing. You know a place that serves it when you see it. So when we set out to take our yearly snapshot of the producers, trends, ideas and objects that are shaping wine in this moment, we decided to focus on the ways in which wine is showing up in the wild—and that includes the ways it appears in our feeds. Consider this your field guide to wine right now.
