It’s no secret that Latinas have a special relationship with hair. From the moment it
starts growing we’re taught how to nourish and take care of it. While every person has a different experience, our shared hair journey is what brings us all together.
Latinx put in hours of trying new products and experimenting with tricks to minimize
the upkeep while creating our own signature looks. And once we figure out how to properly care for our hair, nothing can stop us. Don’t believe it? Marketing executive and curly hair advocate Tondreanna Esquilín, lifestyle and beauty content creator Gaby Monterrey, and fashion, beauty, and self-love blogger Veronica Bonilla took us through their unique hair journeys, from learning to love their hair to the Sephora products they rely on to protect it and provide the moisture they need for healthy-looking and beautiful hair.
While Tondreanna’s hair appears to be thick, the texture of
her curls is quite fine. She remembers loving her hair growing
up, but in middle school, she started getting some discouraging comments about her “messy hair” which resulted in her straightening it. It wasn’t until college when she decided to
start from scratch and cut it all off. “I love my curls now more than ever!” she says.
To maintain her curls looking as flawless as they do, she relies on Bread Beauty Supply Hair Mask Creamy Deep Conditioner
to address dryness and leave her hair looking hydrated and luscious. The perfect leave-in, which for her is Mizani 25 Miracle Milk Leave-In Conditioner, will detangle, repair any damage,
and control frizz.
Tondreanna’s hair acceptance and journey wasn’t linear, but
now she realizes it represents so much of who she is. “[My hair] expresses so much about who I am: from my background to
my personality,” she says. “It represents where I come from, the work I put into self-care, and most importantly, it represents not being afraid to break away from what is perceived as ‘normal.’”

Gaby, aka TheeGreatGabs, has fine hair with natural waves. Growing up, she remembers overstyling her hair and putting it up to avoid dealing with it, but over time realized her hair makes her unique and learned to love it.
“Finding a good hair routine and hair products that fit your hair type is key in embracing your hair,” Gaby tells POPSUGAR. “This will make your routine less tedious and will allow your hair to look beautiful naturally.”
Gaby washes her hair three to four times a week and, at least once a week, treats it with the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector to strengthen her hair from within, reduce breakage, and improve the look and feel of her hair. Once her hair is dry, she uses the Moroccanoil Treatment to smooth her frizz — which is one of her concerns — and to promote softer, stronger, extra shiny hair.

Veronica’s hair “has its days,” as she says, since she has different curl textures. While this is something she’s loved
ever since she can remember, she didn’t really give her hair the proper care it needed until after college. “The transitional stage was my favorite,” she says about her natural hair journey. “It showed me how beautiful my actual curl patterns were and how the old one was slowly drifting away. It was like seeing my past life fade away while the new life was blossoming.”
One thing she mastered in the process was to pay attention to her scalp. Veronica relies on Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Scalp Scrub Shampoo for this. She massages her head with it to help remove any product buildup and soothe, detoxify, and hydrate her scalp. She also learned to address her hair’s dryness and the Amika Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask is her go-to. It deep conditions her hair, restoring and repairing it while also improving softness, shine, and elasticity.
