1. Opt For Natural Textures
Despite what TikTok tells you, when it comes to fashion, there really are no rules. Being comfortable and confident in your clothes will always be more important than whether or not you’re following the latest trends. That said, I do subscribe to the idea that there are certain steps you can take to level up your look, no matter what you’re wearing. After all, the difference between a meh outfit and a memorable one lies in the details — and this summer, there are plenty of details to consider. Ahead, I’m sharing my favorite tips and tricks for elevating any outfit this season.
Yes, natural fabrics like linen, cotton, and silk can keep you cool during the warmer months, but there’s another sneaky reason I always recommend them: both designer and high street brands love to use them. This means if you opt for a simple or classic cut, like say a cotton or linen button-down shirt, it’s virtually impossible to tell whether you paid $20 or $200 for it. Same goes for accessories, too, like a wooden clutch, raffia espadrille, or straw hat. It’s such an easy and accessible way to keep your look elevated!
2. When in Doubt, Go Matchy-Matchy
One surefire way to make separate pieces look like a cohesive outfit is to match them back to something else. Two matching pieces (think: top and skirt, bralette and cardigan, or hoodie and joggers) can help you look put-together in an appealingly low-maintenance way. But listen, we’re not talking about your grandma’s monochromatic sweater set (although that’s chic, too) — this summer is all about the playful prints (gingham! checks! retro florals!) and juicy hues (lavender! lemon! mint!) that reinvent matchy-matchy dressing for 2021.
This also applies to matching your accessories, like your shoes and bag or sunglasses and bucket hat, to create an “outfit sandwich.”. At the very least, ensuring your metals are matching throughout your outfit, for example, on any hardware or jewelry will keep things looking intentional.
Sometimes, all it takes is one distinguishing detail to transform your whole outfit. Train your eye to look for special novelty details when putting together an outfit. I love things like a chain, an unexpected button or zipper placement, sculptural shapes, exaggerated sleeves, or asymmetrical anything — these can easily make an impact, especially if you keep the rest of
your look pared back.
3. Add a Novelty Element to Your Look

Summer is an opportunity to bare some skin, but it’s also a moment to do something with that extra exposure. That’s where jewelry comes into play. Wearing a skirt or dress? Adorn your leg with an anklet. Sporting a bikini or midriff cutouts? An on-trend belly chain will add a hint of sparkle.
