Ultimately, the chance to create new worlds — and break down self-imposed barriers about what is normal — is what keeps Seth inspired. "Our fear of judgment keeps us from breaking into the space of out-of-the-box ideas," she says. "Taking self-portraits in public spaces and sharing my most vulnerable and strange self online allowed me to realize that no one cares as much as you think they do. Your life is yours, and you should live and create however you want to!"
Another milestone in Seth's art career was the release of her photo book, “The Imaginary World of Natalia Seth,” which uses transparent pages to show the layers of elements that go into each of her pieces. "It was a dream to have a piece of my heart distributed to people’s homes all over the world," she says. In the future, Seth hopes to create another physical manifestation of her surreal creations: a playful, interactive art gallery showcasing fashion, photography, multimedia art, and more. Though Seth typically works alone, the possibility of collaborating with other creative minds also excites her: "It’s fun being a one-woman team, but it’s also limiting because I can only do so much."
Seth's artistic journey started as a child. She grew up very shy but found freedom to express herself through creating art and posting it on social media. "As I got more comfortable with sharing parts of myself online, I grew more and more confident in real life," she explains. "Art has given me strength to be myself, which has been my key to happiness and freedom."
Her videos revealing the behind-the-scenes creation of each vibrant image eventually racked up quite the following, and in June 2020, Seth bet her parents that if she could hit one million followers on TikTok by the end of the month, they'd buy her a drone. Within 24 hours, she’d hit her goal — and today, she has more than 2.1 million followers. "This whole experience was the moment that me and my parents truly believed in the power of TikTok, art, and community," she says.
My imagination is like a
put into a blender: messy, beautiful, and out of control."
Her art truly is a labor of love, too. Seth's daily routine varies but might start with a late wake-up around noon and a belated morning meal. "A sweet, delicious breakfast is what gets me out of bed," she jokes. When inspiration strikes, she'll sketch her idea in her "little beat-up book" before scouting a location, sourcing props and wardrobe at thrift stores, and shooting with her tripod, camera, and remote. Any props that inspire her are fair game: Seth might use anything from a lit match to a bottle of Coca-Cola® Dreamworld in an unusual way to inject a sense of whimsy into her work. "Self-portraits can’t be done in a rush — it’s a slow process of perfecting the mood, pose, and angles," Seth explains. "I only pick one photo to edit out of the hundreds I take."
Of course, the surrealist magic really happens when she starts editing each image — a process that can take anywhere from five to 30 hours. Seth's art is a distinctly 21st-century expression: not only is technology central to achieving her artistic vision, but social media is also what's allowed her to gain exposure and turn her passion into a career. "I couldn’t create my art 100 years ago, or maybe even make a living as an artist back then," she says. "Unless you were a Picasso or a Michelangelo, artists in the past had a difficult time selling their art or getting recognized. Now, technology gives us tools at our fingertips."
Giant flying goldfish. A brain inside a microwave. An upside-down ice-cream cone as a hat. It sounds like something out of a cartoon — or, more accurately, Natalia Seth's imagination.
Inspiration can come from anywhere: Seth travels frequently — bouncing between Barcelona, New York, Los Angeles, and her hometown in Virginia — looking for fresh ideas along the way. "My imagination is like a rainbow put into a blender: messy, beautiful, and out of control," she says. "Keeping my imagination alive is crucial to creating out-of-the box ideas. I always start with the building blocks of an idea, then push it to see how strange I can make it."

The 22-year-old multimedia artist forces you to reconsider seemingly ordinary objects by injecting them into totally off-the-wall scenes, often playing with idioms (think: "fish out of water" for the flying goldfish) along the way. "My art is like a playground of weirdness and color," she says. "I believe that magic is all around us if we shift our perspective."
