PLACES
Even in downtown Kabukicho’s famous Golden Gai—an area that tends to attract an eclectic mix of upper-crust clientele, tourists, goths and kinksters—Decabar, a fetish club, stands out. It’s a hot spot for those interested in bondage, live industrial and electronic music, or just dancing with friends with a cocktail in hand. Their live musical events read like a who’s who of Japan’s goth scene, and often highlight famous DJs, like DJ Sumirock, who holds the world record as the oldest professional club DJ. Costumes are expected and encouraged at Decabar, whether it’s for the rubber-themed events, bondage parties or maid café nights. Anything goes here, and dressing up—in full latex, for example, or as your favorite anime character—usually nets you a discount. A recent night, pictured here, involved a special S&M and cosplay party featuring latex-clad bunnies among the partygoers.
There is plenty to drink at Decabar, with a menu of over 30 themed cocktails. DJ, bartender, and club kid legend Sisen Murasaki recommends the Gizensha or “Hypocrite” cocktail, a mysteriously luminescent green concoction made with peppermint liqueur, as well as their soy milk and shochu cocktails, which are only available the nights that Sisen is behind the bar. If you’re not in the mood for anything fancy, you can always grab one of their famous Decabeers, which are lighter, beer-flavored malt beverages.
