Lisbon is, and has been for some time, a culinary destination. But, thanks to a growing interest among lisboetas (Lisbon locals) in domestic wine, and a progressive culinary culture whose influence is beginning to extend to cocktails, there’s as much to love about the city’s nightlife. Whether it’s at the Portuguese capital’s high-concept bars mixing with native fortified wines or the traditional counters serving ginjinha (a beloved sour cherry liqueur), Lisbon seamlessly unites the country’s eras, regions and styles, one glass at a time. — Rafael Tonon
Wine-obsessed chef Leopoldo Calhau wanted to create a charming bar where he could hang out with friends and drink until late. His solution was Bla Bla Glu Glu, a bar that he opened next to his famous restaurant, Taberna do Calhau. The space focuses on natural bottles from all over the world, with a special focus on Portugal. Calhau prepares snacks, such as cod with chickpeas or sardines with roasted peppers, in the neighboring kitchen to pair with the drinks. The venture has been so successful that he recently opened a new bar and wine shop, Chez Chouette, in the Alvalade neighborhood.
